I nearly rated the book a two for the translation. At times, the translation seems to shift into modern colloquial phrases. I had read two of the four books previously and I definitely prefer the prior translations.

I kept reading the Tao Te Ching in this text, over and over again, wondering if I missed something. Yet, no matter how many times I read it, it's really the most awful translation I've ever read (and I've read quite a few). In addition, I've translated some of the chapters on my own, from the original Chinese. I really have to wonder if perhaps Cleary translated this in some attempt to be literal, without actually understanding the poetry and underlying nuance of it. I have a considerable number ...more
