I remember ordering this book because of a strong recommendation and review by a GR friend.
I would give this 3.5 stars.
I will say that while reading most of the book, I thought my rating was going to be 2.5 or 3 stars because I thought it was too long for the plot. However, I must admit I was not expecting the ending at all….did not see it coming. I can’t say anything more than that. I wonder if the author can pull that off again. This was such an interesting ending that I wonder if one can replicate that style of ending (it being unexpected). That is, if I get another book written by her I will be thinking to look for something(s) unexpected in the story line that would make the ending less surprising than this one. I’m not making much sense. I guess good mystery writers will always have their readers guessing about who-dun-it with their readers not automatically pinning it on a ‘usual suspect’.
Synopsis of book that I got from Amazon that sets the stage for potentially interested readers fairly well: Margot's been through a tough separation. But that's in the past now, she's moved out and moved on - or so she tells herself. But her new life isn't all she expected it to be. Her friends and family seem like strangers to her, she doesn't fit in at work anymore. She feels lonely and vulnerable until a chance encounter leads to an intense affair with Leon, a darkly charismatic photographer. Impulsively casting off her old life, Margot surrenders herself to Leon's charm and confidence. She isn't entirely sure what he sees in her, but she's certain that he's right for her. What she doesn't know is that Leon's previous girlfriend drowned in his bath and although the police report says it was suicide - it wasn't.

I think there is another book of hers published in the English language – Rendezvous (2011) --….she has several published in her native tongue, Dutch.
Close-Up was originally published in 2007 (translated by Paul Vincent in 2009) and was nominated in June 2007 for the Gouden Strop and in September of the same year for the NS Audience Award. In 2008 the book was awarded the Silver Fingerprint audience prize.

Een bekende naam in de auteurswereld en daarom vond ik het hoog tijd om er ook eens eentje van haar te lezen. Ik trok naar de bib koos voor deze.
Titel en cover waren al direct een schot in de roos. Ik vond ze heel goed aansluiten bij de inhoud en dat maakt me altijd blij.
Het verhaal begint al direct op een hoogtepunt en er zijn voor mij ook geen dieptepunten in. Je denkt soms wel misschien dat de opbouw te traag verloopt maar achteraf bekeken, is het perfect zo. Psychologische thrillers verkies ik ver boven hun bloederige soortgenoten. Heerlijk om te lezen hoe iemands zieke geest kan werken en hoe die andere mensen, heel subtiel, kan manipuleren.
Je volgt hoe Margot haar leven terug onder controle probeert te krijgen. Deze hoofdstukken zijn genummerd met Arabische cijfers, maar tegelijkertijd krijg je ook een inzicht in de denkwereld van de dader. Een dader, waarvan je onmiddellijk weet wie het is. Of is het hier ook zo dat schijn of beter het geweldige talent van de auteur, bedriegt? Daarvoor gaan jullie het boek zelf moeten lezen want ik ga het hier niet prijsgeven. :)
De hoofdstukken die zich in het hoofd van de moordenaar afspelen, zijn in een ander lettertype gedrukt en zijn genummerd met Romeinse cijfers. Er is dus geen verwarring mogelijk.
Conclusie
Een heel knap boek ! Ik heb het met veel plezier gelezen en het zal niet bij deze ene blijven. 4,5 sterren.

I inititally picked this up with the intention of filling in the V spot on my A-Z Reading challenge. It was much more than a filler-in book however, I actually enjoyed the journey and the deep characterisation quite a lot.
The central character of the book is Margot, a slightly overweight, self-conscious and fairly shy woman, who we follow as she develops a relationship with a shady character by the name of Leon. When we first meet Leon, his partner is dead, having bled to death in his own bathtub.
Now, if this seems like a romance book. never fear, it isn't! I did wonder if I'd picked something up from the wrong section when I started reading it, because I usually only read crime books, and it is true that after the first chapter the 'action' slows down considerably to a slow-burning development of their relationship. But the shocks keep coming, just at a slower pace, and the ending was superb.
This wasn't a book I'd likely read again, because once you've read the ending you've had your pay-off, and any subsequent reading would be marred by the knowledge you have from the end, but I did enjoy it a lot. The deep characterisation was my favourite thing, I felt like I truly got to know Margot, and some of the side characters too, and it was really well plotted - I didn't work out the ending at all on this one, and usually I've got them by half way through, which is a disappointment. But this surprised me, which is something I always enjoy in a book!

Wauw ik ben er stil van en helemaal in de war. Ik ben totaal op het verkeerde been gezet waardoor ik het laatste stuk niet zag aankomen. Wel moet ik toegeven dat ik bij ongeveer de eerste 40% van het verhaal nog niet zo goed wist of ik het wat zou vinden, maar naarmate ik doorzette werd ik er helemaal ingezogen. Al met al een heerlijk boek!

3,75 sterren - Nederlandse paperback
Ik vond het een goed boek, maar niet meer dan dat. Soms ontbrak het aan spanning. Het mocht wat meer zijn voor mij.
Het einde vond ik ook behoorlijk vreemd. Onverwacht is misschien beter geformuleerd. Je verwacht plot twists maar dit kun je niet zo noemen.
Ik las al een beter boek van Esther Verhoef!

Wat een spannend boek. Dit is mijn eerste boek van Esther Verhoef, maar zeker niet mijn laatste. Als het leven van Margot heel gewoon verliep tot na haar scheiding dan neemt het na de scheiding een wending van 180 graden wanneer ze Leon ontmoet. Hij loodst haar een totaal andere wereld in. Veelbelovend, romantisch en uitdagend ziet haar leven er opeens uit tot het noodlot toeslaat. Prachtig en boeiend tot het einde. Ik heb het graag gelezen en ze heeft me overtuigd.

Het verhaal was goed, maar als ik het dan vergelijk met lieve mama en de kraamhulp dan vind ik deze een stuk minder.
Er zit eigenlijk maar 1 plotwending in, de rest niet veel spannends, meer romanachtig en niet een echte goede thriller

Dit boek bleef mij goed boeien! Bij elk hoofdstuk wilde ik weer doorlezen. Je denkt te weten hoe het in elkaar steekt, maar opeens is het toch helemaal anders en daar hou ik van. Hele fijne schrijfstijl heeft Esther en ook dit boek heb ik met veel plezier gelezen!

Cool thriller. I found the protagonist, Margot, a bit naive, mainly in the first part of the novel. Hence, one star deducted. I'm not going to say anything else, in fear of spoiling. An engaging read.

Begin duurde lang en omdat je het gevoel krijgt het al te weten redelijk snel in het begin. Voelt het alsof je leest om het uit te lezen, zonder spanning. Maar dan toch wordt het het laatste deel nog verassend en weer leuk.

Goed geschreven boek, echt een fijne en sfeervolle schrijfstijl. Het verhaal zelf was echter erg voorspelbaar, ongeloofwaardig en vooral weinig origineel. Beetje cliche allemaal.

There's something about the blurb to this book that seems to suggest that it's tending towards a romance. If that's what you're looking for, you might want to consider your options. Whilst we're talking relationship here, we're also talking manipulation, need, dependencies and some really really nasty behaviour.
It's not just the possibility of overt romance that could put a reader off - there's Margot herself. At the beginning of the book she's starting out after a relationship that obviously controlled her, set her life's path. She comes across as one of those slightly wet women - shy, self-conscious, little bit overweight, somebody who is finally starting to take some control of her own life until she meets yet another man. Leon is obviously a shady character, and there's a strange sensation that there can only be one reason why a man like him would be intested in a woman like her. There's a dreadful feeling of the inevitable about the whole thing.
But something happens as you press on into this book, at some stage you start to get a sneaking suspicion that something's not quite as it originally seems. Your perceptions of everybody and everything are slowly twisted, gently rolled sideways.
CLOSE-UP sort of snuck up on me a bit, in the early stages I was fully expecting to dislike it, the premise, Leon, Margot and just about everybody else in the thing. Somewhere along the line something changed and, to be brutally honest, I've still got absolutely no idea how this author did that. It's not the fastest paced thriller in the world, it is almost laconic in a way - perhaps that's part of the way that things sort of sneak up on you, but add to that an ending that I simply did not see coming and CLOSE-UP was quite a surprise package.

I may have read this too soon on the heels of "The Kind Worth Killing" and "The Girl on the Train." It's not quite like those books but hit some similar buttons.
With that said, it's an intriguing excursion that delves deeply into the soul of its first-person narrator, Margot, who's struggling to rebound from a failed relationship and to regain self esteem.
She falls in love with Leon, a photographer, and is soon entangled in his world and in the emotional devastation that remains from the death of his previous lover.
The tale leans a little more toward domestic drama than pure thriller and winds to a satisfying but not purely action-packed conclusion.

Het boek heeft mij van het begin tot het einde meegenomen. Ik ben niet zo voor thrillers maar Close-up was misschien de aanleiding om deze visie te herzien.
Het doet me denken aan 'Voor ik ga slapen' al is de schrijfstijl anders! De combinatie van het verhaal met de gedachten van de moordenaar maakt het spannend en voldoende afwisselend.
Ik was niet bang als ik dit las maar voelde me heel betrokken. Eigenlijk zou ik de personages graag ontmoeten! Een verfilming lijkt mij perfect mogelijk.😊 Het einde maakte dat ik nog meer genoten heb dit te lezen! Ik hoop dat mijn volgende boek mij niet teleurstelt, na dit..

Het heeft even wat tijd gekost om in het boek te komen. Heeft vooral te maken met de opbouw. Het verhaal is wel interessant en ben blijven lezen. Halverwege het boek raakte ik teleurgesteld. Dit is wel erg makkelijk. Wat voor zin heeft het om door te lezen. Tot vlak voor het einde. De wat rare dingetjes zijn opeens duidelijk. En het verhaal klopt weer. Mijn complimenten voor de auteur om een verhaal zo kloppend te maken terwijl het eigenlijk niet klopt.

Nothing wrong with this book really.
Easy to read, easy to follow.
I liked the Dutch setting as Holland is my home country.
But for me it lacked tension and build up. And suspense.
It didn't flow very well either, it's a bit disjointed.
Altogether not a bad read, but the story line could have been made into a more entertaining thriller.

Bijna in één ruk uitgelezen. Spannend met mooie wendingen. Vond wel dat het op het einde ineens erg veel vaart had, terwijl het verhaal dit op 3/4 wel miste. Hoe verder het boek vorderde hoe meer ik me ging storen aan de hoofdpersoon. Vond het wel spannend en heb me ermee vermaakt, maar vond Rendez-Vous véél spannender, daar bleef de spanning er ook lekkerder in.

This is a thriller in the same vein as other thrillers, in that there is a twist, which was ok, however, the four stars are due to the fact that I really enjoyed reading it, the locations, the atmosphere, all well done. I also liked the fact that the main character was likeable, and refreshingly different.

Wat een boek! Op zondag gekocht en op woensdag was het al uit. Interessante personages en een leuke, onverwachte twist in het verhaal. Esther Verhoef is voor mij de ontdekking in boekenwereld in 2009!

I really enjoyed the twisting plot of this novel in which a young woman finds the courage to change her lifestyle after a bad break up, but when she finds out she is nearly identical to her new boyfriend's last girlfriend who committed suicide she becomes concerned...

It's a good book to know about the lifestyles of people involved in creative fields(specially in EU). Initial part of the story is okay, but gives lots of details about London & Amsterdam.The story was gripping in the later half of the book! Some of the quotes in this book are thought provoking.

Not too bad a story on delving into a sinister mind. But Esther steered me towards thinking it's mostly Leon & probably Marianne or Debby until it was Margot's murder in action. I'm also steered into envy at Margot's fortunes in catching such a dreamy man as Leon.

Wasn't really expecting the ending. But so far so good. Oh and one more thing, this should be more of a romance novel than a crime or thriller one. But I've got no problem with that, doesn't really bother me since i liked the story itself.

A nice read, a pretty run off the mill surprising ending though. True, I didn't see it coming, but it wasn't too shocking either.

The ending can be a question mark on who the killer can be if seen in a wider perspective.But overall a good easy book to read with some good words on art and photography.

well, it's an unexpected ending, but the plot is too shallow. this is rather a general romance novel than a crime novel.
