Etruvia has known peace for twenty years. But this time of peace has brought corruption and greed. The nobility has taken control, and the memories of great victories of old have faded. Crime is rife and the once proud people are little more than peasants. As a great evil rises in the desolate north, can a forgotten king and an embittered former war hero wake a nation from ...more

THE KING IS DEAD is a highly entertaining novel about the kingdom of Etruvia. Decades ago, Etruvia managed to win a war against brutal savages but lost its leadership in the conflict. Placing a child on the throne, corrupt ministers soon took over and have run the kingdom into the ground. As a new threat arrives, it's up to the forgotten king, and a heroic Sergeant to save it from destruction.

This is a really fun indie novel and while it has many of the problems associated with indie novels

The narrator is very good, his accent is perfect for this story and he has a good range of voices.

The book starts with a chapter that is essentially a very telly prologue to provide a chunk of non-essential information.

After that we jump right into a nice story with some pretty neat creatures.

The plot is pretty straightforward with no real twists, apart from the one at the very end.

I have three main critiques.

1, The telling in the prologue continues throughout the story. I would have liked to

King Eric of Etruvia has been controlled and suppressed for years by the council. He has trained in the background, fighting crime nightly as a vigilante. He has taken such a small role in the running of the country that people actually think he is dead. The country has been run almost into the ground by the time Eric has made the decision to step in and take control again. In the meantime, strange things have been happening in the villages. Citizens have been disappearing or have been found ...more

The best Medieval fable I've read since David Eddings The Diamond Throne.
You got it all!
The fantasy of medieval times, in the rulings of a King and his knights, protection from his armies, neighbouring towns and old foes, the simple life in the country, Lovers in the woods, the massive Spider in the Cave...

I enjoyed this book, though it was a slow beginning. The audio book narration was a little slow, and a lot of the narrative was telling rather than showing, with a lot of things happening either out of the timeline, or behind the scenes. I would have loved for a lot more of this to be included front and center. This is definitely a political fantasy with more of a historical feel to it. It is full of Politics, Nobles, and Vigilantes. I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more if there was more ...more

Corrupt advisors take advantage of an inexperienced youth, who finds himself King after the sudden and unexpected death of his father. The young king contents himself with allowing his royal advisors to rule in his stead.

Until one day the king finds the courage to stand up for himself, and take back control of his kingdom.

I greatly enjoyed watching the King Eric develop from a spineless pushover to the commanding leader his kingdom needed.

I found this story to be very well written, and very

Is the king dead?

I enjoyed the story apart from the gore. I found myself cheering for the King and his Captain. The ending was unexpected....

Eric was a prisoner in his own castle. Can he find a way to be the king he needs to be for his people? This book completely captivated me within minutes. I couldn't put it down and wanted to know what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the second one. This is the first I've read by this author and it won't be the last!
