12 booksMy formative years were spent dressing my dog in old baby clothes, reading MAD magazine, and dreaming of the day I could head to the “big city.” After a stint in advertising, I escaped my small town Maryland home to pursue big adventures in Los Angeles.
My career blossomed from intern on Hanna Barbera’s The Pagemaster, to character designer on MGM’s The Pink Panther and Klasky Csupo’s Duckman. I spent five years as a storyboard artist and designer at Warner Bros. on Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Superman, and won two Emmy Awards for my work on Pinky and the Brain. I went on to do storyboards for Nickelodeon’s Hey Arnold!, Oswald, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
After a six month long trip around the world, I landed in NYC. With a new outlook (and some great travel stories, including one about a yak cheese sandwich in Nepal that brought me to my knees), I continued my career on the other side of the country. I was the Story Director on Disney’s Stanley, and Noggin’s Pinky Dinky Doo, as well as Creative Director on PBS’s Nate the Great and their hit series, WordWorld. I also created my first animated cartoon, Call Me Bessie! which I co-produced with Nickelodeon and which aired on Nicktoons Network.
I live in Brooklyn, the best place in the world. My favorite pastimes include traveling to exotic places, eating cheese, collecting inspiring quotes, and laughing. I know that anything is possible and I try to live life that way!

Best friends Ollie and Moon love to spend time together. Both enjoy surprises, and Ollie particularly enjoys surprising his friend. On this particular day, he drops hints about the surprise he has in store for her as the two walk across Paris with Moon trying to guess what the surprise might be. Moon isn't very good at guessing what is in store for her since she takes his hints literally, but once they reach their destination, she agrees that it is the perfect surprise. I liked the fact that the illustrations are cartoon drawings that have been superimposed on the photographs of various Parisian scenes. Readers will feel as though they are right on the scene with these two feline friends, even chasing a wedge of Brie on the streets. It's little touches like that cheese that won't stay in Ollie's hand and the facial expressions on the cats' faces that sell this one and give it a particular charm. As I'm not familiar with this series, I am assuming they live in Paris and are not just passing through. I doubt that young readers will be bothered by my particular worries.

Set in the beautiful city of Paris, Ollie wants to surprise his friend Moon. Moon is a really good guesser and found her birthday present two days early. But this time, Ollie is determined to surprise Moon. The get cheese at a Fromagerie, ride the train, visit an open-air market, and take pictures at all the major tourists sites in Paris. Moon makes lots of guesses, but doesn’t guess that it is a carousel, all lit up. Moon loved her surprise.
Similar in format to Mo Willem’s, Knuffle Bunny, the use of cartoon illustrations with real-life photographs is both unique and fun. Moon and Ollie are likeable characters and their adventure through Paris is a great way to introduce Parisian culture to kids. Children will also enjoy trying to guess what the surprise is and like Moon, I'm sure they'll love it.

Another hybrid book that features Ollie and Moon (who also have a new TV series). They are illustrated against photographs. In this case, a story about trying to surprise a friend set against real photographs capturing key sites from Paris.
