When Emmanuel Hernandez (Manny) turned eighteen, he left with one dream in mind, to become a professional soccer player. His dreams are shattered when he realizes he is not a documented American. With love for the sport in mind, Manny tries to overcome the hurdles in his way. The novel traces his life as a young man to a loving father and shifts back and forth in what made him the man that he is today.

It may not resonate with readers across the board, but for a number of us, the authenticity of the language and experiences on the page will ring true and we will often recognize, on these very pages, aspects of ourselves or people we know . That alone makes it a worthwhile experience.

DNFed at 50 pages. Bad writing, un-engaging characters. Reads like when someone tries way too hard to come off as a good writer.
Turner has offered a debut novel that takes readers to interesting cultural, sporting, geographical, and psychological places. He explores questions of family, faith, friendship, sexuality, life goals and meaning, immigration, poverty, and personal identity. At times, the prose left me feeling less connection to the story and characters than I would have liked, but overall, I enjoyed the read and the journey.
