The Pawn

Rate this book
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl's college to take care of the only family I have left.

There's one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.

My virginity.

A forbidden auction...

Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he's the only kindness in a brutal underworld.

Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

A calculating sinful and devious story that erotically blends lust, romance, desire, and revenge into one palpable addictive read. Skye Warren has masterfully crafted a story that begs readers to enter into a world where deception, knowledge, power, and control is a must. So are you ready to make your move and outsmart The Pawn?

photo Untitled_zps5yuj3zcg.png “As Gabriel Miller pointed out, I have one thing left of value. My body. My virginity. Maybe the man outside wants that.”

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Skye Warren and when she decided to write a story that dealt with a heroine auctioning off her virginity, you gotta know that I will be all over this book. And let me just say Skye had me hooked. I was a pawn in her masterfully orchestrated game of love, survival and revenge.

#ThePawn

Avery James is the princess who fell from the graces of the elite and privileged. She once lived an enchanted fairytale life where she was spoiled by her father and had it all but that all came crumbling down when everything of value was gone. Penniless and no money to help pay for her father’s medical expenses, Avery is forced to auction off the only thing that has value. Her virginity.

photo Untitled_zps5yuj3zcg.png “You don’t taste sweet,” he says, pausing. “You taste like I’m fucking dying and you’re the only water around. You taste like goddamn air.”

So when Gabriel Miller bought Avery James, she became not only his possession for one month but he owned her in every sense of the word. His command. His touch. His wants. His needs. His game. And Avery James was just the pawn in this calculated move of revenge and power.

#ThePawn0

Gabriel Miller knew that Avery James is an innocent virgin. She was his for the taking. And once he set his eyes on something, he claims it. As much as he is drawn to her, she was a temptation that he must resist.

Avery’s virginity is for the taking. It is only a matter of when Gabriel will claim it. But what Avery never expected was to be attracted to him. She wants and needs him in such a primal manner. But what happens when Gabriel finally claims her virginity, will Avery find her lose her upper hand in this game of control? In this game of knowing what move to make first, will the pawn outwit the king?

photo Untitled_zps5yuj3zcg.png “Maybe I wouldn’t feel so dirty if he’d just taken my virginity the first night. Regular sex, right away. Even coming on me, as sharp and intimate as it is, I could have withstood. It’s the orgasms he forces from my body that feel like a violation.”

The Pawn is hands down one of my favorite books that Skye Warren has written so far. Each action, characters, and prose were meticulously and flawlessly delivered to heighten the erotic chemistry between Avery and Gabriel. I love that Skye Warren didn’t hold anything back when it came to this calculating game of power, control, and lust. She had readers on the edge as she drops a few twist and turns along the way. And let me just say that ending, has me wanting the next book stat. So if you are looking for a book that was masterfully and erotically orchestrated then this dark romance is the book for you.

This book has wrecked me! It completely blew my mind. I am a total mess, suffering from the book hangover that this one left me with. Wow...just wow!

I have read several of Skye Warren's books. Some of them have been great. Some have been okay. Others have been a miss for me. This book is by far the best book that Skye Warren has released to date, in my opinion. You do not want to miss this one.

As you can gather from the blurb, Avery James puts her virginity up for auction. Gabriel Miller is the man that buys her. He isn't a nice guy. He is responsible for the downfall of her father and Avery's current dire financial situation.

In more ways than one, Avery has to pay for the sins of her father. Her father was convicted of fraud and embezzlement. Gabriel Miller was one of his alleged victims and the man that brought her father to justice. Now he's seeking vengeance.

When I read the blurb, I thought this would be like a thousand others. I was wrong. Avery's plight pulled me in and held me tight. I didn't expect to feel the raw emotion that I did or care much, but I did. This book brought me to my knees!

I won't spoil the ending, but I have to say that I wasn't prepared for it. Although a part of me expected it, I was in no way ready to deal with the fallout. I have so many questions. I'm enraged, devastated and completely addicted to this series.

I would kill to have an ARC of the second book. This is going to be one of those waits that is unbearable. I must know where this story goes. I need the next book. Thankfully, it is due to be released in a few weeks time. I think I'd go out of my mind if I had to wait much longer.

Read this book.

I'm the pawn, and he's my triumphant captor.

This was easily my favorite by this author to date. Gripping. Captivating. Magnetic. Dark. Erotic. It was EVERYTHING I love about a dark romance. It's not gratuitous violence and scenes thrown in for pure shock value. It's a mind fuck. An incredibly written, twisty, and delicious mind fuck that I couldn't put down from beginning to finish; with a heroine you'll want to root for, and an anti-hero that you'll want to hate only slightly more than you love him.

The Pawn reminded me all over again why I love dark romance. It's that electric zing of the forbidden. That feeling of rooting for a man that's supposed to be the bad guy, yet you know that someone deep inside is someone that may be just an ounce redeemable. It's the flutter of butterflies in your belly when you watch a sweet, innocent and naive girl grow into a woman that's much stronger than you think. It's that delicious tingle you get watching the fly get trapped in the spider's erotic web. It's pure wickedness.
Soon, little virgin.”
“Don't call me that.” My voice trembles only a little, revealing the turmoil inside me.
“What else should I call you? Princess? Darling?”
“You could call me by my name.”
He dips his head, his mouth right by my ear, his voice just a breath. “There's only one thing I'm going to call you. Mine.”

Growing up in privilege and money, Avery had an enchanted life. She idolized her father, she looked forward to her future and starting college, she had a doting boyfriend that she suspected only wanted her for his status, she had little worries aside from questioning her relationship...until it all crashed down on her...
I look up at him, searching his eyes for some hint of kindness, of mercy. There's none. I find only fire- and the thought that comes next makes me shudder: this is vengeance.

Losing everything she finds herself penniless and desperate, and desperate times lead to desperate measures. Which is how she finds herself in the Den, agreeing to sell her virginity and body and soul to the highest bidder for a month.
You don't know anything about me.”
“I know I could make you come in two minutes.”
A step back, my calves bumping the small chair where I sat. “You wouldn't.”
“No, but you wish I would.”
“I hate you.”

Gabriel Miller is an enigma. He's not a good guy, but his golden eyes lure her deep into a tangled web that she doesn't know how to get herself out of.

The story was incredibly written. I love mythology and getting bits and glimpses of it only heightened my enjoyment. Watching Avery slowly come more and more into her own was almost as satisfying as watching the shadows lift from the mystery that is Gabriel but only leave behind more questions.
There's something feral about this man, a fire that burns inside him, untamed.

The plot it filled with twists and turns that keep you absolutely riveted to the pages. The characters are multi-layered and enigmatic. You find yourself at the edge of your seat, heart beating wildly in your chest, just waiting for that final shoe to drop. This is one of those books that you will read in one sitting and it will leave you craving for more. It's darkly erotic and entirely addicting.
You don't taste sweet,” he says, pausing. “You taste like I'm fucking dying and you're the only water around. You taste like goddamn air.”

If you're a fan of this author, and you love a well written dark romance, this is one book that you do NOT want to miss. I may go crazy in my wait for the conclusion, but I don't regret a moment of it because I have the best book high after finishing this. All of the stars!

If you are fallowing my reviews, you already know how much I love my dark reads. Nothing keeps me at the edge of my seat more than a dark tale. And if it has a forbidden-ish enthralling romance, then I’m really a happy reader. I’ve read several books by this author, so trust me when I say this one is of her best she’d written so far. 'Pawn' , the first installment in the series was intriguing, mysterious, erotic and so very gripping from the prologue. This captivating tale of revenge, power and control sucked me in from the start with its fascinating, twisted story line and fantastically portrayed characters. I couldn’t put it down for one moment. The engrossing, well developed plot for sure held me captive the entire time and I’m anxiously waiting for the next installment in the series.

“You could call me by my name.”

He dips his head, his mouth right by my ear, his voice just a breath. “There’s only one thing I’m going to call you. Mine.”

For seventeen years Avery’s life was pretty perfect growing up with money and spoiled by her father whom she idolizes very much. Now Avery is looking forward to make a life for herself, go to college and maybe marry her boyfriend, who like her, comes from a wealthy, respected family. Her life is turned upside down when her father makes a...mistake and they are left penniless. Avery is lost and lonely since they lost everything, except their house and her father needs special care. She is desperate and desperate situations call for desperate measures. She’s ready to do anything to save the house and care for her beloved father, even auction her virginity to the highest bidder for a month.

“You can run away, little virgin. But you’ll come back.”

Gabriel Miller is a dangerous man, an enigmatic man who makes sure Avery knows who and how he is from the moment he buys her. He has his own reasons for buying her, letting Avery know he owns her in every way that is, that she’s just a ‘little virgin’, a pawn in his masterful game of control...and not only.

Avery knows she should hate the one who bought her like a simple, useless object, she knows that he’s the enemy and should stay away from him, but she can’t deny how Gabriel makes her feel without even touching her.

“There's something feral about this man, a fire that burns inside him, untamed.”

This first installment in the Skye’s newest series was the perfect blend of suspense and seduction. It was a thrilling read from start to finish, edgy and intense and held me captive the entire time. Fantastically written, this dark-ish story, full of twists and turns left me wanting more, more of captivating story line, more of the amazing chemistry between the two main characters and definitely more of Gabriel, our anti-hero that intrigued me from the moment he was introduced.

The two main characters were fantastically portrayed and so engaging. Avery was a strong, endearing heroine I liked from the very beginning. First and foremost I have to say I really sympathize with her. Her determination to save everything and also her father was admirable. She was maybe naïve and vulnerable at times, but there were times where she was stronger and capable that I had expected. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by her character.

“You don’t taste sweet,” he says, pausing. “You taste like I’m fucking dying and you’re the only water around. You taste like goddamn air.”

Gabriel was really well portrayed. Intelligent, intriguing and also intimidating, he was the perfect anti-hero – dark, yet intriguing and redeemable. You will not only be mesmerized by him, you will fell for him as well. He was sexy and possessive, but also sweet and considerate.

The chemistry between Avery and Gabriel was off the charts hot and so palpable. Their game of power and lust was addictive and well done and for sure left me wanting more.

“You hurt me, you know….Whenever I think about you, I hurt.”
He puts a hand to his chest. “Here.”

If you are looking for a dark and twisted read with an engaging story line and two fabulous, well developed characters, don't hesitate and try this first installment in the series.

This author never fails to disappoint, the prologue sucks you in, and there on in like an unsuspecting fly you're stuck in a spider's web with no way of getting out, beating heart, racing through the pages, loving every second, minute, hour your lost within the pages of this book only to be released at the end, leaving parts of yourself behind. This author is truly talented, her use of words, the flow of the story, a cat and mouse game of revenge, lust and power.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic I sold my soul to the devil

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

More twists and turns than a roller coaster on a collision course of destruction.

This was probably one of my most favourites by this author, being gullible when it comes to the lengths this author will go to lock me into a false sense of security. I was anticipating a cinderella fairy tale the likes of getting rescued by a knight in shining armour that was not the case, it was but it wasn't. It's left me sitting here wondering what the fuck I just read, and gasping for the next book, how can I put into words how much I loved this book, this review doesn't do the book justice!!

This author is the QUEEN of cliffhangers, of mind fucks, of hating then loving her characters, the dark, the grit, the love she throws them all at you in a tightly wrapped ball of breathless wonder.

Can not wait for the next in this series. This was epically good!!

Move into jeopardy. Be captured. So simple and yet so hard to do. Surrender.

The Pawn is a darkly intoxicating story of a young woman who sells her body and her soul to the highest bidder in order to save the only surviving remnant of her former life and the man who comes to own her. A calculated game of wits and maneuvers ensues within these pages, a dark battle for control and surrender takes place. And in this dangerous game of give and take, of fear and lust, each move of the pawn and the king reveal bits of strategy, of secrets, of desire, of truth.

In chess we’re well matched. I still lost, sacrificing the game to get information that broke my heart. But when it comes to sex, he’s the far superior player. I’m a novice. I’m nothing.

Like every Skye Warren book I've ever read, I couldn't put The Pawn down. Skye Warren knows how to create that razor sharp line between love and hate for her readers, taking them on a deliciously dark ride through pleasure and pain, often tangling the two so intricately, the reader is unsure which they're even feeling at any given moment. That's the same tumultuous journey Avery James is taken on with the man who buys her, the king who owns her. This book hurts so good in a way that only this author's books do. The sensuality in these pages is perfectly yet painfully laced with terror and heartbreak, with uncertainty and fear, that the reader, right along with these characters, is left consumed by everything they're made to feel.

It’s my role in this game: to fall when the time is right, to protect the king until I’ve run out of time. To sacrifice myself at the perfect turn.

This author is brilliant. A uniquely smart writer, a captivating storyteller, there's no other way to describe Skye Warren than brilliant. Unsurprisingly, there's nothing straight forward about this storyline. It's intense, it's complex. It's completely unpredictable. This story of sex and lust is so exquisitely woven together with the game of chess, with the game of seduction, with the game of lies and deceit. It's a masterful, emotional labyrinth rife with pleasure, pain and heartbreak. The Pawn is a ruthless barrage of emotions you'll both love and hate to feel all at once. And this is just the beginning...

4.5 ‘we need more’ stars!

“You’re innocent. And I’m going to ruin you.”

We love that excitement we experience when a much loved Author has a new series coming out. So when The Pawn landed on our kindles -which is book one in a series- we jumped right in. When you meet the anti-hero – Gabriel Miller– you’ll know what we mean when we say; consider knickers melting off at first ‘sight’ because woah!!! Once again Skye Warren showed us why we love her writing as much as we do, it has real depth and such fabulous characterisation.

“There’s only one thing I’m going to call you. Mine.” The possession in his voice made me shiver. “Never.”

We love our dark romance reads- falling in love with the anti-hero and the strong but wronged, beautiful heroine who loses a part of her heart unwillingly. There’s something about these stories, you just know that despite hating the fact that you fall in love with a wicked man, there’s something vulnerable and passionate hiding within him, it just takes a hell of a lot of work to find it but you know it’s there. The passion calls to you and you can’t help yourself. So yeah, we were there every step of the way with Avery as she sold a beautiful part of herself, encountering an enigmatic man who stands for everything she rejects, and whose role in her father’s demise may have been pivotal.

‘Everything he says is designed to scare me. Everything he does is designed to knock me down.’
“Be careful. I’m more dangerous than you know.”

The Pawn was sexy, enticing, dark, mysterious and passionate and we were hooked from page one. We felt the connection and whilst Avery was an ‘open book’ if you will – Gabriel stayed a bit of a hard nut to crack. What we saw, felt and experienced though made us fall in love with this man. The glimpses we got of what was hiding beneath convinced us of that. It felt as if a captor may somehow become a saviour?

‘I’m the pawn, and he’s my triumphant captor.’

Poor innocent Avery, everything changes from one day to the next. Her life, what she believes to be real turns out to be not so. She’s had such tragedy and emotional upheaval in her life, ruled and nurtured by a beloved hand of lies. The sacrifice she’s willing to make is huge, almost unbelievable, yet we understood her intentions and desperation.

‘I have to believe I’m doing this for a reason. Have to believe that it will be enough. There’s no one left to save us except me.’

Gabriel Miller; he saw, he wanted, so he took. Yes please! This man has that whole over protective, dark and dangerous, insanely sexy vibe going on which we love so much. But….we don’t believe we’ve seen his complete true nature yet.

‘He is eccentric, but he’s also methodical, intelligent. Strategic. Everything he does had a purpose.’

Pasts are revealed, people exposed and hearts unveiled yet mystery and secrets remain. We have a feeling there’ll be more twists to come on the road of recovery, redemption, love and revenge. We were gutted when we turned that last page as we could’ve kept reading, desperate for more. We inhaled it! At least we don’t have too long to wait before we find out just where their story goes in The Knight. LOVED it and highly recommend for lovers of dark romance and their anti-heroes.

“You hurt me, you know….Whenever I think about you, I hurt.”
He puts a hand to his chest. “Here.”

This was my very first Skye Warren book and im sitting here questioning why? The Pawn is a seductive enticing read any romance reader will enjoy.

What first attracted me to this book is the blurb. A virgin auctioning herself to help pay for her father’s medical expenses. Yes please!

Avery was a rich girl, but now she is poor and everyone that once was her friend had turned thier backs in her even her boyfriend. Now she only has her father, who is practically on his death bed. The only thing she has left is the house her father built for her mother. With Evrey in need of money she is desprate and will do anything to keep that house and keep her father comfortable.

The only thing she has left of value is her virginity. You can’t help but feel sorry for Avery. Her father did alot of shady deals and now Avery being the good girl she is, trying to save her house and her father has to pay the price, but at what cost?

Gabriel is very rich, and he didn’t expect to bid on Avery, but there’s something about her that he has to have. Gabriel just doesn’t want Avery’s virginity, but he he wants her mind, body and soul. Gabriel is ruthless at times but you also saw a softer side of him too.

The chemistry between Gabriel and Avery was out of this world. The thing I really enjoyed about this book is that Gabriel kept Avery guessing, wondering, and even pining after him. I loved the back and fourth between the two of then and had me glued to the book wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I was shocked that Gabriel had a hand in Avery’s current situation. We don’t know the exact reason. There’s plenty of drama with her crazy so called Uncle and her father’s health situation. It was enough to keep me on my toes and wanting to know what was going to happen.

Mesmerizing, like a predator's eyes at night. That's how I felt when reading this beautifully dark story. Mesmerized.

Gabriel Miller exudes dangerous power and his prey is a vulnerable, desperate damsel-in-distress. She is so innocent and strong, and he is darkness personified. OMG, that combo gives me so many kinds of thrills! And is masterfully crafted by the author.

The writing flows, impeccable and soulful. On the verge of total ruin and degradation, Avery agrees to an outrageous ultimatum that will lead her into a maze of wrongs and betrayals. Auctioned to the highest bidder, she ends up as the prized possession of her father's enemy. I was trembling along with her , so helpless and beautiful and pure when she's exposed and sold in front of merciless rich people.

The subject matters of this novel contrast so sharply with the delicacy of the emotions in the narrative. There is a strong sense of threat in every scene, yet also a pulsing bonding between Gabriel (gorgeous name) and Avery. I relished his foreboding presence, laden with furious and conflicting reactions to his human purchase.

Interwoven with the duel of wills, references of art, myth and longing for the unattainable mark this story with stunning depths. It's a game of chess that bleeds into real life. Avery and Gabriel play with fire, so sensually, so poignantly. I was enthralled with the secrets, the shocking manipulations, the tender intelligence of Avery facing a hardened strategy master like Gabriel. I've never seen chess played like that!

I also laughed at what happens the first night after the auction, and I literally screamed my throat raw at the ending of this first book in the Endgame series. Amazing. I need some redemption here. Like air itself.

Avery James is the daughter of a very rich man that has a lot of connections. However, one of his partners leads to his demise and Avery has to save what is left of her father. With just a high school diploma, she has nothing to offer any one. Even with nothing she decides to go to a loan shark for money and there her fate is decided. There she sees a man that she has never met, but feels safe with him.

“A sense of familiarity fills the space between us even though I know we haven’t met. This man is a stranger, but he looks at me as if he wants to know me.” – Avery

He warns her that he is not a friend, but an enemy. Yet his actions contradict everything he says.

“He made it clear that he’s my enemy, if I still had any doubt. I’m the pawn, and he’s my triumphant captor.” – Avery

Still, Avery is the daughter willing to save her father no matter the cost. Even after the secrets are out, and she knows the truth she can’t help but to protect her father. The only thing standing in her way are this stranger and her emotions.

Absolutely loved this new beginning to a series! This book stays true to the dark and romance that we often see from Skye in her books. The Pawn had twists and reveals, yet how it ended rarely killed me. Yes, there is a cliffhanger, but a good one wanting to know more. I can’t wait for the second book in this series.

Leigh's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

It was a cliffhanger!! Aaaaarrrrgh! No one warned me about this! How cruel is Skye Warren? I was drawn into the world of corruption that is Tanglewood. I was seduced by a man that appeared to be equal parts monster and savior, and I was ensnared in a web of desperation and longing.

Only for my journey to come to a screeching halt to be continued in February!

My only consolation is that this amazing story is not over and I know I have a treat waiting for me in a few months.

The Pawn was fantastic. It was thoughtful and seedy and featured characters where no one was what they appeared. For each new person I met, I had to question whether they were truly the good or evil person they appeared, or if they were wearing a mask that would soon be removed. Were their motives pure or were they looking to gain something. This described the confusion I had with Gabriel Miller more than any other character.

As the man that bids on Avery at an auction to sell her virginity so that she can raise money to save her father and family home, Gabriel is the quintessential underworld boss. He is quiet and dominant and can control with a glance. But despite his role in the downfall of Avery’s family, he is surprisingly generous and thoughtful. I found myself confused by him and his true intentions. Was he falling for Avery? Or was everything a master plan to destroy her? And why?

Avery was a character that I truly felt badly for. She was in a situation that was not of her own making, where everyone around her that she felt she could trust turned out to be a shark circling in the blood filled waters. She was young with no one to help her and she did what she thought was right in order to survive. I found it heartbreaking each time she discovered the true intentions of those around her and wanted her, despite the odds, to find security in Gabriel.

Skye Warren is such a fantastic writer. Everything she puts out to read is sexy and wrong and slightly diabolical. There is a dark edge to all of her romances and it explores the seedy side of romance. In this case, Gabriel and Avery are terrific together and physical attraction jumps off the pages, even if their minds aren’t there yet. I devoured this story and wouldn’t change a thing about this book!

Well, except that cliffhanger thing….

ARC PROVIDED BY THE AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

I have been waiting on ‘The Pawn’ by Skye Warren so was so excited to eventually get the chance to read it and why wouldn’t I be when you get to meet Gabriel Miller. WOW! What a man and what a read, five stars.

I do love a dark read and can’t help but fall for those men that you really shouldn’t but can’t help it and that is exactly who Gabriel Miller is. He is all wicked, dangerous and sexy as sin but of course that is not all there is to him. The more you read the more you fall for this dominant, over protective and mysterious man.

Avery’s world is crumbling and she is not sure what is real and who to trust. She is desperate and the only thing she has of value that she thinks can save her is herself. Untouched and innocent Avery is willing to sacrifice so much. However as more and more is revealed Avery is conflicted and confused about this perplexing but enticing man.

Such a sensual and enthralling story that draws you in as you try and figure out who the real Gabriel Miller is and what he really wants. This is definitely a game of give and take with many behind the scene manoeuvers to be figured out. What a tangled web of lies and deceit that needs to be worked out and you undoubtedly get caught up in as the reader as much as the characters do.

What a brilliant and thrilling book with so much pleasure and pain, trepidation and fear along with need and lust. I loved every moment of this book and couldn’t put it down, I felt so many emotions and I was so beautifully manipulated in a story of power, revenge, need and control that it is one of my favourite reads of the year.

Skye Warren has written a sexy, intense and edgy story that had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what was going to happen next within the story. At the start of the book I knew that this would be one that would stay with me even after I finish reading it. It reminded me why I love Dark romance reads and would have to be one of my top favourite dark romance reads. The Pawn shows you the lengths that someone is willing to go to save someone they love.

Gabriel Miller is the bad guy of the story and also the hot, sexy guy that is such a mystery. Throughout the book there is many times where I think I have Gabriel figured out only for him to do something that shocks me. There is so much I wanted to know about him and hopefully in the next book readers get to learn more about him. He had this sexiness and way about him that drew me to the character. Gabriel is one of those characters that stays with you well after you finish reading the story.

Avery is someone that has lost everything and trying to keep the things that she has left. She has a strength within her that I find admiring and the way that she’s willing to do what she has to do in order to help her father. Throughout the story it is obvious that Avery grows as a person within the book. At the start of the book Avery was a naïve girl that had everything she could ever want, but she loses it all and it forces her to open her eyes to what is really going on around her. I really enjoyed Avery though and enjoyed the growth that she went through within the story.

The Pawn is about Avery James who was a rich young woman that loses it all and has to sell he only thing she has left of value. During all these moments there is one person that is there for all of it and that is the dangerous and sexy Gabriel Miller.

Overall, I loved this story and found that I couldn’t stop thinking about it after I read it. Skye Warren has written an emotionally gripping story that was much more then I originally thought. I was drawn in from the first page to the last and couldn’t help yell in frustration when it finished because I cant wait to see what’s going to happen next. This is a definite must read for fans of dark romance.

Skye Warren is my go to dark/anti-hero author. SHE CAN DO NO WRONG in my eyes. So when I heard she was starting a new series I JUMPED at the chance to read this. This novel opens up with a bang where Avery James is forced to make a deeply personal and desperate decision to auction off her virginity in order to save her father. Loyal to a fault, and despite his fall from grace, she takes it upon herself to save her family. But who is the lucky purchaser? Only the powerful businessman who might have played a pivotal role in the destruction of her family - Gabriel Miller

I love these type of stories because you have the deeply mysterious and dangerous hero who needs and wants something from the innocent heroine. Who is Gabriel Miller? He is dark and scary and so damn sexy. He is also a complete enigma. You never know which man Avery would get.
Is he a criminal? Yes. Is he dangerous? Yes. But is he truly "bad"? Is he irredeemable? Those are the questions that need to be answered. At times he was cruel and yet at times he was so protective of Avery, you were left unsure as to what was going to happen.

Just to appease my own inner (screaming) fangirl, can I just add that I about died and swooned over the fact during one of their initial meetings, he saved her from an accident and his brief touch and his striking eyes just stayed with her. I think my heart might've thumped out of my chest.

And the cherry on top? Sky Warren's ability to write strong, feisty and resilient heroines. What I loved about Avery was the fact that despite being in distress, she was no damsel. Nor was she a doormat. She was a level headed young girl forced on a path she didn't see coming in order to make things right. But unbeknownst to her, this would be at a cost to her own heart and emotions as she realizes not everything is black and white and secrets come out that not only damn her but all she holds to be true. ~ Ratula, 4.5 "I am slowly DYING for the next book" stars

Eeek. Got an early ARC!!!!!!!! And it's brilliant!!! Edgy and intense!
Skye Warren outdid herself with this book. Her writing is always captivating and dark, but in this book I feel as if she put her entire soul in the pages. The descriptions, the feelings of her heroine were so achingly real that the book had me glued to my seat.
This is the story of Avery James and how she fell from grace. She grew up as a princess but after her father's bad decisions she is left floating in an endless sea of debts. Her father is bedridden after being brutally hurt and now the only person Avery can count on is herself.
In a desperate effort to save her house and her father, she gambles the only thing that she owns; her innocence. Her body is the only tool she has in her power in a world that is cruel and unfeeling.
Two men will auction her to the highest bidder. One man will own her for a month.
Can Avery survive the fear and humiliation? Can she endure selling herself for the sake of her father? How many secrets does her father hide? What happens when the perfect world she had envisioned in her innocent mind is proven to be a lie?
And the biggest question of all: Can she trust Gabriel Miller? Can she trust the man that will play her like a pawn? Read to find out!
The writing, the characters and unbelievable chemistry made this book! It was fast paced, detailed where it counts and full of captivating sensuality. The author has incorporated quite a few themes from Greek mythology and I seriously fell on love with how perfectly they suited the storyline.
I adored every sentence and I seriously cannot wait for the next book.
Are you ready for a game of chess?

"Every pawn is a potential queen. – James Mason

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so excited to bring you the most amazing story of this century, The Pawn, an edgy, sensual and seductive story that will have you at the edge of your feet and give you the most illicit shivers ever. Damn, I was so in love with this book. It was that book that just oozed dark romance perfection at its finest. I was simply in love with everything in this book. I am a huge fan of Skye Warren and she definitely outdid herself with The Pawn. Wow, I am in awe.

“You taste like I’m fucking dying and you’re the only water around. You taste like goddamn air.”

The Pawn is about the story of a naive girl, Avery who is led into a dangerous game with a billionaire Gabriel Miller. Wow, this story was so mind blowing. The Pawn was a dangerous, gritty and suspenseful book that had me reeling. I felt like I was in a movie. I am telling The Pawn gave me the most amazing goosebumps that I could feel it my skin. Wow, I was so addicted like a person who is addicted to alcohol and drugs. The Pawn was my own personal drug and I wanted to live in the high it gave me. The Pawn was pushed to its greatest heights. I was captured from the first page to the last. The Pawn was like a cat and mouse game but with a dangerous and high stakes. Skye Warren truly wrote a magnificent book. She is a genius. I would love to go into her brain and know how she comes with stories like this. (I am fangirling here a bit lol). The Pawn oozed dark and grit in its beautiful form. Not only was it suspense but there was a story of sacrifice. How far are you willing to go to help the ones you love even though you know it will cost you your reputation and also a piece of you?Yep, this story will cripple you and bury you but in a good way.

"A little bird in a gilded cage. Why keep one except to hear her sing?"

Avery is such a naive girl. I mean there were times I wanted to shake her to her senses. But she had a quiet strength to her that made her such a likable character. I loved her journey as a woman. I always love when I read a woman discovery her sexual self. I saw her developing chapter by chapter. It was such delightful process to read.

"He’s like a puppet master , moving me faster and faster until I come apart."

Gabriel, Oh my Gabriel. What a man. My gosh, I absolutely fell in love with me. He was dangerous, unpredictable, harsh and so secretive. I wanted to know more about him. He had that swagger and edge that was just so darn sexy. Aaa, I want to have his babies lol. Gabriel also had moments of vulnerability that I wanted to know more. There is more to him and I cannot wait to know a bit more in the next book.

The Pawn is one of those books that will forever be etched in my ind. I really cannot wait for the next book because there is so much I want to find out. With Skye Warren, I know it is going to be a wild epic ride.

Avery James' life has completely imploded. She was once an American princess with her whole life in front of her, a year later she is destitute because her father's fall from grace. She is trying desperately to keep her father alive and also keep the family home. Without much to her name she seeks out a loan shark and finds herself face to face with Gabriel Miller, the man who brought her father down. Gabriel doesn't take too kindly to people who steal from him, and that is exactly what Avery's father did. Big mistake. Avery is a little girl caught in a web and the only bargaining chip she has is her innocence.

I went into this one blindly, I didn't even read the blurb, because I wanted to experience this completely organically and I'm glad I did. This story packs a punch. You may think you have read this particular trope before, but, trust me, you haven't read one quite like this. I love the push and pull between Gabriel and Avery. One steps forward, the other takes a step back. One will have the upper hand, then the it shifts and the other has the power. Both of them are a contrast of light and dark. The chess game analogy is fitting, it's like a game of chess but instead of game pieces, it's people being played. It felt like the bottom was going to fall out any minute and that added a tautness that made this a real page turner. I read it straight through with no breaks, it's that good.

I have been a Skye Warren fan for a while now and she never fails to amaze me with her brilliant story telling abilities. She is a master at creating the perfect Anti-Hero, people who are dark and unsavory but by the end of the book you are totally and completely in love with them. She has a way of shining a light into the darkest part of human nature, unvarnished and unapologetic.

I am so looking forward to the next book in this series, I just know the anticipation is going to kill me! Who needs Christmas, is it January yet?

Reaching the ending of the book, my fingers gripped my e-reader so tight, I thought it was going to crack. I couldn't believe I had gotten to Ms. Warren's ending blurb, while my heart was free falling and trying to make sense of what had just happened between Gabriel and Avery.

Oh my GWAD!

To say this took my emotional stability and F*cked me right up, would be an understatement. Like, standing ovation to an awesome author. I love this woman.

Oh my, The Pawn was a brilliant, beautiful read that was so much more complex than just two people falling in love, through whatever circumstances. And that's the thing, I assumed this book would be like another one of 'those' reads. Dark brooding alpha male. Heroine gets trapped in alpah's web and then a hop, skip and jump later someone's heart is on display. At the end of the day, I knew I was going to like this book on some level or another because I mean come on, it's Skye, but I didn't expect this book.

In the beginning, Avery's father is throwing her an extravagant high school graduation party, inviting everyone in their rich society. The next chapter, a year or so has passed and Avery's family has hit rock bottom. Avery's father had been a dirty and dishonest business man, and those who had suffered by his cheating hands took their revenge on him in court and physically.

Everything was taken from Avery and her father, leaving them broke and her father unable to even bath, let alone feed himself. Bills are coming from everywhere, draining their accounts, to the point she has to sell everything in her house to attempt to keep up with the bill payments. Or let alone pay for her father's health care. Avery has hit rock bottom with her father barely conscious and everyone leaving her side, including her boyfriend.

Who can she turn to? No one will help. Everyone she and her father thought were friends all bailed on them, the moment things got tough.

Seeing only one way out of the financial despair, Avery goes to the only loan shark in town that will have the substantial funds to keep her afloat. There she meets Gabriel Miller. A powerful man that her father had screwed over, and he made sure to make an example out of him. Which ultimately led to their accounts being bled dry.

Gabriel Miller was responsible for Avery's father losing everything. He was responsible for Avery not being to afford her lavish lifestyle. And, most importantly, he was responsible for Avery having to bargain the only thing of worth that she had left- Her virginity.

The pawn was raw, undeniably sexy and heart-wrenchingly enticing. It was hard for me to break away from this book, to tend to my daily responsibilities. Gabriel was a man of mystery and still is, especially after what Avery's father did to him, his actions have you thinking and guessing. He's being nice, but why? Avery is the daughter of the man who screwed him over, so why the pleasantries? Why the little actions, to play with the heart-strings? Why the small gestures of sympathy? He teased hope in front of Avery, showed her pieces of himself that made her believe. Is he that much of a monster?

"You need to keep your defenses up with someone like me. That means staying sober, for starters. Sleeping with a knife under your pillow won't hurt."

That was Gabriel's warning to Avery. To let her know where she should stand, but then his actions show the complete opposite in the next few pages. Orchestrating her walls to decline. Was this all part of the game he was playing? Not only going after her Vcard but also something more dangerous, just to humiliate her and watch her fall even harder. Is he that much of a cold bastard? Is messing with Avery's mind, body and soul his ultimate revenge?

There were parts in The Pawn, I literally felt Avery's fear of the unknown, of the darkness that is Gabriel Miller. They seeped into my blood, and ran cold just like hers. Tears stung my eyes, feeling Avery's anxious nerves, and I am no way a virgin, but Ms. Warren's writing was beautifully crafted in such a way that had collided with that innocent part of myself. Every intense and intimate scene between Avery and Gabriel cut deep into my soul.

"I'm not a monster, despite what you think. I could have had you. Could have forced your hand even then. But I wanted you to come to me."

And then Gabriel says stuff like this, and you don't know what to think. Yet the one question remains, what does Gabriel Miller want from Avery. There is an unspoken overcast between the two of them, more so from Gabriel, but you don't get those answers. Especially not in this book, which had me tapping away in serious denial, upon reaching the end.

The Pawn, what a suited name for this book and characters.

UGH.

Impatiently waiting for the next installment.

Gabriel Miller: "You're innocent. And I'm going to ruin you."
Avery James:"You can have my body. But you can't touch my heart."

It is time for:
-a game of chess,
-some greek mythology
i.e. Iliad,Minotaur and Ariadne and Theseus
-an amazing library
-a naïve virgin about to become homeless
-a disturbing, disgusting uncle/godfather
-an auction only for the richest, ruthless, shameless bidders
-an Alpha male with unknown, ununderstandable motives
-some homemade moonshine
-lots of training
-few sacrifices
-rage and revenge
-betrayal and lies
-lust and passion
-money, money, money

I really do not know how to play good chess, but I could still follow the reasoning and I truly enjoyed the book.

The only negatives of the book are:
a) The repetition every other page of the words “virgin” and “virginity”
b) Not enough details about who this mysterious Gabriel is or his motives. If I remember correctly we do not even know his age – or did I miss this?

Hopefully since the story continues with the book “The Knight”, the two negatives that I have mentioned will be corrected.
Nobody is a virgin in the series anymore.

Avery's life of luxury and privilege is pulled out from under her by the dark and mysterious Gabriel Miller. He's destroyed her father and left them penniless. With her beloved home slipping through her fingers Avery uses the only thing she has of value to save it...her virginity.

One month and she'll have enough money to save her home and care for her father. Just one month...she'll give him her body, but never her heart. Easier said than done when Gabriel shows glimpses of kindness just to rip it away with coldness.

Revenge, deceptions, intrigue, passion...pull up a chair and make your first move because in this game it's winner take all.

Good gravy this book left my stomach in knots. I'm not keen on humiliation in my romance books and this one had that in SPADES. Needless to say, I spent the whole book on edge and slightly nauseous.

That aside I really enjoyed it. I am certain there is more going on with Gabriel then what we were privy to in this installment (yes this end on a cliffy.) And I can't wait to figure out what. Avery was a likable heroine and held her own with Gabriel. I'm hoping in book two we get to see an Avery that kicks ass.

This was well written and laid the groundwork wonderfully for the upcoming conclusion (I assume book two is the conclusion but not 100% sure.) The plot flowed nicely. The sexual tension was delicious. There were twists and turns, and hints of mysteries yet to be revealed. Overall just a totally engaging and entertaining read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

The Pawn is the first book in the Endgame Series by Skye Warren.

How far would you go to save everything that means anything to you in life? Even after finding out your father might not be who you thought he was and has lost everything including almost losing his life. This is the story of Avery James and Gabriel Miller. One born and raised to be something in life and the other thought to be a criminal and responsible for Avery being the boat she's in . Desperate for money and the only thing she has of value is her virginity. A virginity she's agreed to auction off to get the money to save the only thing she has left of her mother. The house.

I loved every single second of this book. I equally liked Avery and Gabriel though he is still quite the mystery to me. Avery was born and raised with a silver spoon in her mouth. She was engaged to a future senator and going to one of the best colleges around. Suddenly her dad is charged with all kinds of criminal activity and nearly killed. Now she has had to drop everything to care for him and find a way not to lose the house her mom designed. Gabriel is the man responsible for her dads demise. Her dad stole from Gabriel and now one gets away with that. This book was amazing. It drew me in from the moment I stated. I so didn't want it to end. The Pawn is filled with mystery, secrets and a huge what the heck is going on.

Skye Warren has once again hooked me. I so can not wait until January when the next book, The Knight, is due to release. I so need that book in my hands right now.

This was an enjoyable and captivating story! Skye Warren delivers a seductive, dark, erotic story! The premise was unique and I was intrigued from the moment I started reading!

Gabriel was dark, mysterious, cocky and hot! Avery was innocent and sweet but sometimes she got on my nerves .

But apart from this I loved that the story was full of suspense!

I can't deal with my life right now. I need Gabriel and I need him now.

Avery James has lost everything. She only had her virtue to protect but now even that is up for auction.

Gabriel Miller paid a hefty price for his little virgin and he plans on getting his money's worth. The secrets he's hiding are too big and they might just break Avery.

I have too many feelings for this book and swear to God my investment in Avery and Gabriel is unhealthy. I love them both separately and I FUCKING LOVE them together.

Gabriel is a GOD. He is possessive, smart and a closet sweetheart. Avery is a badass. I cannot wait for book two because that cliffhanger was lowkey hurtful. DO NOT miss this book. It's worth everything.

Overall Opinion: I haven’t read a trilogy in a while, because they have felt lacking in some way. I was sucked right into this one, and I really hope that the story continues to keep me engaged. There is a good amount of mystery surrounding the H and he is pretty hot! I do wish we got his POV though just to understand him a little more. I’m on to the next to hopefully get to the bottom of Gabriel...🤞🏻😉

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Avery and Gabriel’s story. Avery’s world falls apart when her father is found guilty of crimes, his money isn’t taken away, and he is beaten to a semi-vegetative state. She is desperate and approaches a well known loan shark but ends up putting her virginity on auction instead, as it is her only left asset. Gabriel is the man that her father double crossed and even though she feels a pull to him, she is scared that she is just a ploy in his revenge scheme. There is some hot sexy times, some strategic moves made...and we get a cliffy for the next book.

POV: This was told in Avery’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I breezed right through this one! It flowed well and I never skimmed.

Instalove: No. No shared “ILYs” yet.

H rating: 4 stars. Gabriel. I liked him. He is still mysterious and I’m not happy with the way he treated the h at the end — but I’m sure there is a bigger reason for his behavior that we’ll find out later.

h rating: 4 stars. Avery. I felt bad for her situation, but I appreciated her strength.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story. There are some D/s dynamics going on, but pretty mild.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: No

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No. Once they are “together” they stay together.

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends on a cliffy because it is part of a series. The next book, The Knight, is already available.

How I got it: I got it for free on Amazon.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

5 BADASS-VIRGIN Stars!!!!!

Skye….Skye!!!.....SKYE!!!!!!!!! I have read a lot of Skye Warren books, and this is my top fave!!!! I have been a fangirl of Skye for a long time, and I always enjoy her books. She is one of the best dark romance writers, in my opinion, and she has outdone herself with this book! All of the feels! The plot is just genius. This story has been written before, but not Skye Warren. When Skye writes it, it’s just better.

This is the type of book where the only reason you put your kindle down is to jump up and down because the characters said or did something so badass that you can’t help but fangirl in the moment.

à la Mode St. » fashion

I look up at him, searching his eyes for some hint of kindness, of mercy. There’s none. I find only fire – and the thought that comes next makes me shudder: this is vengeance. It’s not a feeling he’s had, a fleeting thought for revenge. This what he’s made of, cell by cell, atom by atom. He’s pure fury, and he’s coming for me.

à la Mode St. » fashion

My Gabriel & Avery:

 :

Avery has grown up with everything she could ever ask for. After a terrible scandal with her father’s company, she and her father are left with close to nothing. In order to do anything she can to save her house and care for her father, Avery goes to the one man who might give her a loan. Little does she know that she will meet the man who ruined her father and give her a proposal that she cannot refuse in order to save her house and her father’s life.

à la Mode St. » fashion

”Can you at least look at me after I suck your dick?”

à la Mode St. » fashion

Avery is a virgin…..A BADASS VIRGIN. This girl stands her ground. She may be naïve but she has got balls of steel! She gives back as good as she gets with Gabriel and I was rooting for her the whole time. She only has herself to depend on, but she doesn’t need anyone else because she does it all. She is willing to sacrifice everything to do the right thing.

…this man of precious metal and revenge, of carved wood and heartache.

GABRIEL.That’s it. Just his name sends shivers down my body. Gabriel is mine. Seriously. Back up, ladies! I know Lana wants to claim him, but NOPE! I refuse. He is ALL MINE, whore! He is a Grade A – Ass….Hole. My kinda man. He treats Avery with nothing less than disdain. She is the daughter of the man that cheated him, and he is willing to put her through hell and humiliation to get his pleasure. I loved the glimpses of compassion in his character, but he inevitably shows his true colors and is true to his inner asshole.

à la Mode St. » fashion

"Here’s the thing about owning a virgin. For as long as I don’t fuck you, I still own one."

à la Mode St. » fashion

I can’t say much about the plot without spoiling, but I will say I could not put this book down. It was emotional and fast-paced and intriguing, and I want more! This book is beautiful and broken and genius.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger. Should you care? No, for 2 reasons. 1. Because you enjoy this book so much that is doesn’t even matter. 2. Because the next book, Knight, comes out next month so you don’t have to wait very long. And let me tell you, I am going to be pouncing on that book as soon as my grabby little hands can get a hold of it.

"Every pawn is a potential queen."

One word. Perfect.

I had a mild panic attack because book 2 hasn't been released yet. Where has Skye Warren been all my life? This was incredible. The pace, the sexual tension, the characters... BRAVO!

I shelved this book into my favorites section, but now I'm scared. I hope I didn't just jinx it. Don't you hate it when the first book was absolutely mind blowing, and then the second book just wasn't as thrilling? And then you just want to cut your heart out with a dull blade because you've been waiting forever for the rest of the story but all you ended up with was disappointment? (I'm just joking... not really)

The story is about Avery. She's the perfect daughter and has it all. Good school, good grades, wealthy father, engaged to a young man going into politics. Her amazing life ends when Gabriel Miller comes into the picture.

He takes everything away from her.

No more money. No more college.

On top of that, her father is sick and needs expensive medical care.

So she sells her body and soul to the devil himself.

Gabriel has the upper hand. He's older, experienced, and calculating. There are moments when he is like a savior, and then he suddenly becomes cold. He is such an enigma, and I can't stop thinking about him.

Gabriel and Avery play each other like a chess game. Avery's inexperience and innocence is sometimes a disadvantage, but the game isn't over. I can't wait for book 2. This is a must read!

I haven’t read a Skye Warren book for some time now. I’m slapping myself in the face and questioning why? The Pawn is a saucy seductive enticing read any romance reader will enjoy.

What first attracted me to this book is the blurb. A virgin auctioning herself to help pay for her father’s medical expenses. Yes please!

Avery is a good girl. She was a rich girl, but now she is poor. She only has her father, who is now almost on his death bed barely functioning. The only thing she has left is the house her father built for her mother. She will do anything to keep that house. I love my damsels.

She’s nineteen super unexperienced. The only thing she has of value is her virginity. You can’t help but feel for Avery and try to give the poor girl a hug. Her father had some shady deals and now Avery is paying the price, but at what cost?

Gabriel is very rich and he didn’t expect to bid on Avery, but there’s something about her that he wants. He just doesn’t want Avery’s virginity, but her mind, body and soul. Gabriel is kind of complicated, but he isn’t ruthless. There were soft sides to him and there were moments he pushed back and it made the book really interesting.

Let’s just say there was awesome chemistry between Gabriel and Avery. The thing I really enjoyed about this book is that Gabriel kind of tortures Avery by keeping her guessing when he will pursue her. I like that a lot because it made me glued to the pages and I never knew when he would pounce.

I also like that Gabriel had a hand in Avery’s current situation. We don’t know the exact reason, but I like guessing. There’s plenty of drama with a crazy Uncle and the father’s health situation. I was kept on my toes.

Overall, The Pawn was an enjoyable read. I was engaged, entertained and happy.
