Tired of looking at the bright side of life? Want to see up close how people's lives unravel and flounder? Then Maupassant is just the thing for you. He might be the best depictor of the "trivial" variety of human misery (mostly self-inflicted) ever. Here I mean "trivial" in the sense of not caused by war, revolution, economic collapse or suchlike, just more or less normal interactions between people.
