The couple: Max and Roxanne

Romance trope: shifters
Series: Catamount Lion Shifters
Length: 192 pages

Plot: Max and Roxanne were hot and heavy when they were seventeen; everyone thought they would go the distance. But then Max and his mom left town suddenly and Max called Roxy and broke things off. Fifteen years later he's back and he wants to make amends.

Commentary: Whew! Fifteen years and no contact. I couldn't have done it. Just a no from me. I loved this author's writing - her stories set in Alaska are some of my favorites - but this just didn't hit right. That and I wasn't sure why it was a shifter story. That didn't seem to make much of a difference - maybe it does in the rest of the series?

Previous book in the series: Destined Mate
Next book in the series: The Lion Within

Catamount Christmas is JH Croix’s latest book in her Catamount Series, and it checks off so many of the things I love reading about in a book. First off, it is a romance novel with a definite HEA. Second, it is a shifter romance novel. Third, it is a Christmas romance novel. There is something, at least for me that make a book timed during Christmas, that just make it so much more emotional to me. I don’t know why it just does.
Roxanne Morgan’s heart dropped to her toes the day he walks back into her deli. He broke her heart 15 years ago, the day he called and told her he was leaving Catamount, Maine, and she never saw him again! His nerve, what is he doing here!?!?
Max Stone never forgot Roxanne. The day his father died in the accident at the mill, his mother packed up all their belongings and moved them to Virginia, was the hardest day of his life. Max is back, he is staying, he still loves Roxanne, and he is determined to win Roxanne back. He is also determined to find out how the accident that killed his father happened!
I LOVED watching these two, well, Roxie anyway, fall back, no, realize that they were still in love. Will Roxie open her heart again to Max? Will she trust that this is real love, and not just a shadow of what they had in the past? This is an HEA book, what do you think? Buuuut, how will that happen? You must read this wonderful book to find out.
Thank you, Ms. Croix for the hours and hours of reading entertainment that you give to your readers. The in-depth descriptions and characters build up make your books phenomenal. I always know before I even pick one up that I will enjoy it, and Catamount Christmas was no different.
Thank you for reading my review.

Max Stone returns to Catamount after being gone 15 years and Roxanne Morgan's emotions go into overdrive. When Max an his parents lived in Catamount, his father worked at the paper mill while Max and Roxanne were a couple. But when Max's father dies in an accident at the mill he returns home from school to see that his mother had packed everything and told him to severe all ties to Catamount while they moved to Virginia. He always regretted the way he ended things with Roxanne though. Years later his mother tells Max why they left the way they did and after her death, he's ready to take on the mystery. As Max and Roxanne work through what they mean to each other now, Max works with Hank and the other guys to delve into what really happened to his father.

I enjoyed the book which drew me into the storyline. However, there were quite a few grammatical errors which detracted from the story for me. I also would have liked to see more detail on the mystery itself.

The old saying to 'damn with faint praise' came to mind after reading “A Catamount Christmas, Paranormal Romance.
TBH the sex scenes were written with some brio but just about everything else seemed to fall flat.
The title is misleading as Christmas only enters the picture in a seven page Epilog.
It's pretty much the same regarding the 'paranormal' element which plays no real part until the finale.
Fifteen years after suddenly leaving Catamount, Maine, and the teenage girl he loved, Max Stone is back.
Roxanne Morgan never married and he hopes to work his way back into her heart.
She's still attracted to him but finds it difficult to get over what she feels was a betrayal.
He does have a good explanation for leaving - it's the secondary plot in the novel - but she believes that 15 years without a word was excessive.
Will they get back together? I couldn't bring myself to care.
2.5 Stars, brought back to 2 Stars.

Catamount Christmas is the 5th book in the Catamount Shifters series. As with all of J.H. Croix’s books you can read this one as a stand-alone but once I read one of her books I always want to read the others in the series.

Roxanne and Max were high school sweethearts until the day his dad died. He broke up with her, moved away, and broke her heart. Roxanne has never gotten over her heart break and is stunned when he walks into her store 15 years later wanting a second chance.

She finally finds out why he left so long ago but she doesn’t know if her heart can stand it if he left again. In the middle of all of this, Max is looking into his father’s accident and stirring up some trouble. Can Max find out what really happened to his dad and convince Roxanne that he never stopped loving her?

4.5 stars This is an excellent contemporary paranormal romance. The main characters were pulled apart in high school because Mac's father died. His mother relocated with him in order to keep him safe. Max returned to his hometown after being away for 15 years. Roxanne was devastated when he moved and has a hard time believing in him. Even though this is a werelion story the author draws the reader into the characters lives. It includes some intrigue, suspense, is a stand-alone with a HEA. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by this author.

Headlines are on overrated

All in all the book was good. It did however have its faults, for those who get irritated at the editing or lack of, this one has its moments. Repetition is another problem. I hate wishy-washy characters and the lead female was back and forth more than a Newton's cradle. As a fan of shifter romances I hated the "is it fated or is it not"...a concept for some shifter romances I guess but my first time coming across it.
This sounds like I didn't enjoy the book but I actually did, short and sweet, read without skimming or even just reading the last chapter to find all resolutions. That makes it a good read

A very good Christmas shifter love story

Max left Roxy when they were both teens after the death of his father. Roxy's heart is walled off after the loss of her teen love, and she never quite recovered. Max moves back to town, and has a lot of trouble convincing her that he won't leave again. It also turns out that there is embezzlement in other mayhem that happened in the past that has severe consequences in the present. I haven't read the rest of the series, but this is a good entry to it because it's a standalone story. This makes me want to investigate the rest of the books.

A romance of lost love found again. The most, if not all, characters of the story are mountain lion shifters. Fifteen years ago a teenage Max left his home when his mom dragged them both to Virginia after his father's death. He left behind a confused and heartbroken Roxanne. Now he is back and wants to have a chance with her again. But why did he leave and how can she trust that he really is here to stay? He must prove himself and she will help him solve an important mystery.

Great Story

Since Roxanne was always there fir her friends, it was only fair that she got her HEA too. Max, a love from the past, returns and turns her world upside down even though she fought her attraction. All the friends from previous shifter stories were included so it was great to hear about them as well. When Roxy and Max got together it was hot and steamy!

Wasn’t Believable

I couldn’t finish this book because I couldn’t get past the fact he stayed gone for fifteen years and never contacted her. Yet he longed for her every day. He also got a law degree. I hate it when the author treats you like you’re too ignorant to figure things out.

Max and Roxy

Max and Roxy were sweethearts in high school. Suddenly Max and his mother were gone. No note no goodbye. He called to say they were breaking up. Roxy was heart broken.
Today he shows up in her diner. After 15 years he wants to talk.
Any story of MS Croix is worth reading. Shape shifting is not my thing but a good love story told by MS Croix is.

I loved this book! While looking for answers as to how Max’s father died, Roxy found herself torn between helping out and falling back in love with her first and only love. How did I not know that Ms. Croix wrote paranormal books? I’ve loved every one I’ve read and will now start looking for more of the shifter novels.

Max

Max and his mother left Catamount, Maine the day his father died, leaving the only place he had ever lived and Roxanne the only girl he ever loved.

It's now 15 years later and Max has returned to Cat amount for 2 reasons. First, he wants to reunite with Roxanne. Second, he wants to learn what really happened to his father.

Good but one little thing

This is a good Christmas story , second chance romance with some mystery. One detailed that bugged me through the whole.thing was the hardware/general store/coffee shop was supported to be in an old.Victorian house. There's no house big enough to be all the things described, so I knocked a star off for that.

Catamount Christmas

A basic return home story with angst and looking for answers to a fifteen year old accident. Seems disjointed at times.

Meh. I wanted this to be more focused on Christmas and instead it felt like a Lifetime movie with shapeshifters and a Christmas epilogue.

A nice second chance story set Christmas. Max has returned to his home town after being away for 15 years. Roxanne has taken over the family business. I’m not sure I would have been receptive after such a long time apart but Roxanne was and that’s all that matters.

Cute

It was a cute short book. It is a fast read. Has some romance scenes. It just needed some more buildup to the sex scenes.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book.
A Catamount Christmas by J.H. Croix is a shifter romance about Roxanne Morgan and Max Stone. Roxanne’s family was one of the founding families of Catamount in Maine and she has lived there all her life. Her life is going good and then one day at the deli in walks Max Stone after being gone for 15 years. Before he’d abruptly left after the death of his father behind an accident at the Mill they had been in a relationship and she believed that they were very much in love. But when he called and broke up with her and abruptly left town she never really thought that she’d see him again. But now his mother has passed away and he tells everyone that he’s back for good. Of course Max has a good explanation as to why things happened the way that they did but Roxanne is hesitant to let him back into her life even though the feelings are still there for her as well. But with Max coming back to town with questions and suspicions about the death of his father at the mill Max brings some danger with him because there are some who would rather have the past stay the past and some questions be left unanswered.
A Catamount Christmas is supposed to be a Christmas themed story and while there are some Christmas elements thrown in it is mostly focused on Max working to regain Roxanne’s confidence, trust and love and for her to believe him when he says that he’s there to stay and not just going to leave again. Of course there is some danger written in to help them both to see what they mean to each other and to help Roxanne break through her issues and to see the truth of her feelings. While the story glosses over Thanksgiving and touches a bit more on Christmas I would call this more of a holiday romance since it doesn’t really focus too much on Christmas until you get to the Epilogue. All in all despite that I really did enjoy this book. It’s a good read with just a hint of danger but nothing too serious and quite a bit of heat and sex. Well written and very engaging overall.
