This was an okay collection of short stories but honestly there was not enough action to keep me entirely interested. I'm assuming that it's okay I haven't read any of the other Gryphon Clerks books because 1. this is said to feature different characters and 2. it is given away when you join the author's newsletter so to me that means 'no previous experience required'. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The book has several stories that have some of the same characters, but the stories themselves can be considered stand alone stories. The characters are well developed, plot exceptionally written, action always present and humming along in the background, and some of the endings are surprising and unexpected. A lovely set of lovely stories. Even if you haven't read any of the Gryphon Clerks books, you will be able to enjoy these stories - the world building is incredible, the characters realistic, and the atmosphere perfect. These are the kind of stories that you wish you could get from your favorite authors - backstories and side stories and short sequels, that all take place within a clearly defined history of the world. Definitely worth signing up for the newsletter for these!

For someone with an English degree, Mike Reeves-McMillan has spent a surprising amount of time wearing a hard hat. He's also studied ritualmaking, hypnotherapy and health science.

He lives in Auckland, New Zealand, the setting of his Auckland Allies contemporary urban fantasy series; and also in his head, where the weather is more reliable, and there are a lot more wizards.
