** Shelter for Adeline is the 7th book in the Badge of Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.
New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
Yet another fantastic story in this series, with some suspense and excitement and a growing love but also lots of problems. Dean is awesome, so supportive, caring and loving from the minute he stops to help a young women in the diner. He sees she needs help and doesn't hesitate. Adeline has suffered from epilepsy since she was little but its getting worse, doctors are recommending surgery which is scary. She loves her job but not the current boss, she is getting creepy vibes from him. Her dog was originally just a pet but seemed sensitive to her illness so had some training to become a service dog. I find a lot of animals are sensitive to illness trained or not, they like to offer comfort, even cats. It is great to yet again get insight into how a person deals with a handicap from their point of view, I dare say many of us have at some time or other seen first hand someone have a seizure. Even maybe helped them, but how many actually think about the affects in that persons eyes and perspective. Having helped and been a witness to this myself I was aware of their surroundings, making sure they couldn't hurt themselves giving some padding for their head, and keeping people away so they weren't staring. Then giving them time to come back and also calling paramedics, it didn't feel like much when I have done this but reading this story made me see that actually it was probably just what they needed and all I could have done in the surroundings we were in at the time. The idea of a service dog that can give a warning 10minutes before it hits to give them time to find somewhere safe is a real gift. Susan Stoker has done a sensitive but informative job yet again with a subject that can make a lot of people uncomfortable, intertwining it into a very special love story that had me enthralled from the first page. I haven't read one bad book by this author and I have read almost all her books, I automatically pre order as soon as the option comes up she never lets me down.
I always enjoy a Susan Stoker book. She writes hot alpha men, mostly public servants or military men/women. They meet their other half and although there is some type of crisis that they need saving from, they are never shrinking violets.
This was no exception. Great alpha hero. A strong heroine who lived with epilepsy. They are brought together during a crisis situation for her and they fall in love. No cheating or ow/om drama needed for these great stories. (although the "bad guy" of the story is the heroine's boss, I don't consider it other man drama because they have never been a couple and she has zero interest).
I appreciated that the heroine never pushed the hero away. The hero was attentive and kind and didn't falter from taking care of her. Also, it was steamier than some of her previous books which made me very happy.
Awesome secondary characters with a set up for Chief's story.
My "beef" with the story is the lack of epilogue. I was so disappointed to get to the end with no look into the future. I've read enough of these stories to know that, although they make appearances, the previous couples are not showcased enough to justify not having epilogues. We get invested in these characters and want to hear about their happily ever after, not just alluding to the fact that they get one. Had there been an epilogue, this could have been close to 5 stars for me.
Susan Stoker does it again. I don't know how she consistently writes bestseller after bestseller but boy, does she have the recipe down pat. Super hot, military or civil servant - ✔. Strong, beautiful kick ass women - ✔. Awesome friends that'll do anything for each other - ✔.
Adeline Reynolds is used to being different but despite being saddled with a disability, she's created a good life for herself. A job in her chosen field (even though she detests her boss), great family, wonderful dog that fills her life with love and also, alerts her to any oncoming issues with her epilepsy. All in all, she's doing fairly well. Trying to find a man to be by her side through all of that; however, isn't going so well. I've considered some crazy things to get out of a bad blind date but having a seizure during lunch isn't on anyone's bucket list. The d-bag that was her lunch date bails on her at the first sign of trouble and she's left to manage on her own...until the sexy firefighter shows up.
Dean "crash" Christopherson happens to be having lunch nearby when he sees the beautiful Adeline and knows she needs help. He whisks her away to a safe place to relax and recover from the seizure that takes over her body and finds he likes taking care of her. He convinces her to finish her interrupted lunch with him and enjoys getting to know her. He's taken by her strength, poise and beauty. She likes how genuine, caring and protective he is. He lets her be herself, seizures and all.
Dean can't get her off his mind and out of his heart. Adeline can't forget the first guy she's ever felt safe with and what begins as a chance encounter becomes so much more.
As usual, I was swept up in this book by the middle of the first chapter and couldn't put it down. It's funny, sexy, smart and compelling. I truly appreciate that Susan takes on difficult subject matters, PTSD, mental illness and disabilities and presents them in a way that makes you come away seeing things more clearly. There are everyday warriors fighting these battles, often silently and alone. Additionally, she profiles the everyday hero, our military and first responders and does so in a way that humanizes them and gives us a glimpse of their lives. I love this about her books! I have come to think of her characters as friends and can't wait to see the rest of them fall just as hard as Crash!
Susan, I'm still waiting for my other half, and would be blissfully happy with one of your guys. Won't you please send one my way? lol
Adeline is a epileptic that has a dog that can alert her when she is about to have a seizure. While out on a blind date from online she tells her date that she has minutes before she has a seizure and needs help to find a safe place to have it. Her date freaks out and leaves and while she if left trying to figure out what to do when firefighter/paramedic Dean comes to her rescue. Dean was watching her when he realized there was some kind of trouble and because he is attracted he asks her out immediately after she has recovered from her mild seizure. Adeline is hesitant but she decides to take a chance since he has been so nice and the hero is going to make sure that she accepts him as a permanent part of her life.
This started out really sweet. I liked both characters and then it took that turn to the annoying. The hero sometimes felt fake. Like the things he was saying didn't come across right while I was reading it. It felt like something someone put in his mouth as the perfect thing to say almost but when it came out it didn't translate the same as when he started. I also had huge issues with the heroine as it went on too. I get that she wanted her independence and that she felt smothered by her sister and parents but she was so defensive with everything that came out of his mouth. The stalker aspect didn't work in my mind and felt thrown in. The fact that she kept brushing off issues as no big deal and I can handle it threw her into the TSTL category. Even when she realized her mistakes she was still trying to run from the hero. It was just a hot mess for me. So I skimmed more than I read and couldn't get passed any of the issues I had. DNF even though I read quite a bit but skimmed more.
Shelter for Adeline Wow, Susan Stoker wrote another great book. Adeline Reynolds just wants to be seen as another normal person she might have a service dog who alerts her when she will have an epileptic seizure but that doesn't stop her from finding love. While on a lunch date her service dog alerts her, telling her date what was happening sent him to the hills luckily Dean "crash" was there to help her out. Dean takes her to his fire station to have her away from prying eyes and safe from hurting herself. Adeline wonders where this amazing guy who helped her is but Dean likes her and decided to ask her out. She might think he wouldn't want to deal with her seizure but she is wrong he wants to be there for her every step of the way the good and the bad. While they grow in there relationship she deals with struggling to get an operation and a crazy boss who can't figure out with his mood swings. While starting to fall in love and learn more about each other they realize that they were meant for each other but someone already has their eyes set on Adeline. I truly loved this story my little brother suffers from epileptic seizures and this story meant more to me and loved how she struggles to find control while dealing with her seizures. Reminds me of my brother trying to be independent like Adeline, Loved the story.
Crash & Adeline meet when her date walks out cause she let's him know she has to get somewhere safe because her service dog, Coco, is alerting her that she is about to have a seizure.
Crash comes to the rescue and takes her across the street and then to the fire station, (he's a paramedic), for a safe place for her to ride out her seizure. Not only does he stay with her during the seizure, but he proceeds her to take her to lunch afterwards.
Little does she know, he noticed her when she first walked in the restaurant. Crash asks Adeline out for a date the following weekend & takes her on the first day of a lifetime. They go to a glass blowing demonstration where he makes a special trinket for her. Then he takes her to dinner then he brings her back to the fire station to get on the ladder in bucket to go up and watch the sunset from the ladder and bucket of the fire truck. He was all alpha & very dreamy!
Unfortunately there's the bad guy who is obsessed with Adeline in between that and her seizures they have a hard row to hoe. But all the fire station are there to help them through it.
What I love most about Susan Stoker books is even the best most gorgeous & fit guys love ordinary women. Even women with disabilities are not looked down on and instead treated with love and respect.
I know that alot of people don't like the instalove, but I still like the thought of love at first sight.
The story of Dean and Adeline is such a sweet and beautiful story. Adeline suffers from epilepsy and has a service dog, Coco who alerts her before she has a seizure. I absolutely adored that there are animals in this series! I love learning more bout what service animals can do to help people and Coco is definitely special!
Adeline was such a strong character and you knew reading the book she was determined to be independent and overcome her disability. Absolutely loved how she stood up for herself!
Dean is a firefighter/ paramedic and finds Adeline in a diner one day after her blind date ditches her after learning about her condition. Dean comes to her rescue and gives her a safe place to have her imminent seizure.
What starts off as a rescue quickly morphs into the makings of a beautiful relationship. I loved how romantic Dean is while he tries to woo Adeline. Their journey is beautiful and I loved hearing about it.
I loved the suspense that was in this book as well! It added to the story beautifully!
In SFA you have Adeline ,who has epilepsy, and Crash , aka Dean. He meets her after her blind date leaves her in a diner right before she's about to have a seizure. Thankfully he's a firefighter with medical training and is able to take her to a safe place before it hits! For Crash, it's love at first sight! I loved how in this story the characters took things at a slower pace, getting to know each other, learn their quirks and personalities before taking things to the next level. There's plenty of heat throughout the story with looks, touches, and comments they make that builds up to an extremely steamy coming together! Loved how the villain in the story is developed and how things are built up through the story for that characters reasons for doing whats done. And at the end......Chief...wow. Glad he's next in line because I can't wait to read what he gets into!! Another winner for Susan Stoker!
This is Adeline and deans story, and it doesn't disappoint. Excellent story--Adeline loves what she does in marketing, but her boss takes full credit for those that work for him. Her dog Coco-certified as a service dog-alerts Adeline that she's close to a seizure. Adeline is upset when her dog signals that she's about to have a seizure, Her date bails on her. Dean a firefighter/EMT introduces himself asks if he can help, takes her to his station across the way and watch over her through the seizure. Although embarrassed, they both realize they are attracted to the other, which develops into dating. Things heats up between Dean and her, lots happening, with great romance. Excellent story.
Loved the Hero & heroine (and her dog). He was hot and she was a shy & somewhat reserved girl with seizures. It was definitely insta-love on the Hero's end. The story dragged in places and I wasn't sold on the whole stalker storyline which bumped my rating down a bit.
I love over protective alphas! Dean was so sweet...and a firefighter too! Great story and great characters, but I can't believe I have to wait until August to read Chief's story!!
Wow! Just wow! Another 5 plus star read! There is so much to say about this book but simply put, wow I loved it so much, seems to cover it nicely! In fact the only bad thing about it is that it had to end. I don't want to give too many specific details about this awesome book but let me say it is a must read. Susan Stoker truly knows how to write hot sexy heroes and strong kick-ass heroines. This story is just so good. I totally adore Dean (Crash) and Adeline!! Dean is a hard working, sexy, gorgeous, and very alpha firefighter/paramedic. But he is also so sweet, loving and compassionate, just try not to fall in love with him. I know I fell and so fast too! He is for lack of a better word, dreamy. Adeline is also hard working and a beautiful woman both outside and inside (but doesn't realize her appeal) and also happens to suffer from Epilepsy. She works for a Marketing company and loves what she does. Because of her disability, she has a beautiful service dog named Coco who accompanies her everywhere. He alerts her every time she is within 10 minutes of having a seizure. He's an amazing dog. After a date gone bad, they meet at a diner and begin what will turn out to be a match for all ages. The scene in this book where he takes her home after a date and she invites him in and he says No but then goes on to explain why in explicit detail is hands down THE HOTTEST scene I have ever read when there is no actual touching involved. This makes him so completely irresistible. She fits in so well with his friends and their women. The way they deal with her epilepsy together is so heart warming. OMG, and last but not least, can I just say that the way Chief takes care of her at the conference because Dean could not be there totally endeared him to me and I cannot wait for his book!!!
Ok , I have been so good religious fan of Susan Stoker since the Protection series. I loved every single story! Every one of them. With that said when Justice for Mackenzie came out I was electrified. That book kept me on the edge of my seat. Not to mention a Kleenex or five was so necessary. When Justice for Mickie came out wow was I let down, I absolutely loved Cruz but her , not... so ...much. ...At all! I remember sending Ms Stoker an email and she told me not everyone is gonna like every story she does and that that was ok. But to be ready for the next, that I would love it. Well, I have liked them ok, but I haven't loved any of them, they became some what boring and predictable to me. I just kept hoping and praying they would get back to the intensity of the first books she wrote. I am still a fan, and I will still read these stories as I am invested in all these characters. I can't explain away the fact that it's just strange to put the intensity into all her Protection series then notch it up to the stratosphere with Justice for Mackenzie, then just deliver out mediocre stories from there. It's kinda heartbreaking to find an author you really fan girl for and have her let you down time and again. That is why this story got so few stars. It's how I feel. The books do not suck they are ok really and I would totally recommend the Protection series and Justice for Makenzie. I just don't think I could sing the praises of all this series, I do like the Rescue stories , but again she starts out hot and then it fizzles. The redeeming thing about that series, is a little girl who carries the stories . So sorry, but I just couldn't in good faith scream OMG what an amazingly awesome story this was, because it was too predictable and just ok.
There's one thing I've come to expect from the stories in this series by this author, kick ass women and the men who love them. Her books bring awareness to the challenges the characters face, and the heroic ways that these women manage their lives. I always come away with a deeper appreciation for first responders, law enforcement officers, men and women in uniform, and of course the message of strength and independence these women bring to the forefront.
Adeline and Dean's story is no different, there is edge of your seat passion and suspense, with the sharp dialog always present in Ms Stoker's stories...carrying the story from beginning to end. Adeline's disability of Epilepsy is presented in a straight forward manner, demonstrating the every day challenges, and sometimes discriminations, faced, as well as how the love of family and friends ease a burden no one should face alone...not to mention an adorable and dedicated service animal/Lab named Coco!
With Chief's story up next in the series, I'm looking forward to reading just how Sophie will break through his rock hard exterior, to the fine heart within.

The following are my comments and views of the Susan Stoker book 'Shelter for Adeline'.
Adeline is a strong yet vulnerable heroine who has epileptic seizures, and her lab Coco, is her service dog who alert’s Adeline when a seizure is coming. Dean "Crash" Christopherson the charismatic attentive hero is a sexy Firefighter, who comes to Adeline’s rescue. Their relationship throughout the entire story is so realistic that it made me laugh, cry and sigh loudly to the very last page. The day to day challenges, a sense of humor and heartfelt scenes gives them just enough time to get to know one another and the love between them is hot, the romance to die for.
I fall in love with all of Susan’s characters and her portrayal of her men and women in uniform, law enforcement officers, and first responders, shows her feelings for what they do, and bringing awareness to the challenges they face. Her love of writing is what keeps me coming back to read her books over and over again. I think you will love this book as much as I did. I’m looking forward to reading more from Susan in the coming years.
I will be buying a retail copy of this book on release day.

Adeline was the perfect balance between vulnerability and strength. She stood up for herself and did not let anyone walk all over her All of Susan's heroines are strong but I think Adeline may be one of the strongest.
Crash was an awesome hero. Steadfast and gentle. He did not push Adeline for anything and wanted to take things slow, as a gentleman should. I think this book is slightly more erotic than previous books in the series. There was the normal hero must save the heroine which I love, btw!! It also gives you a preview into the next book in the series. Chief and Sophie. I fell in love with Chief in this book. Just as much as I did Crash.
I don't read a lot of MF books. I read mostly MM. Susan Stoker is one of my auto-buy authors. I love her writing style.
I will be buying a retail copy of this book on release day.

words cannot describe how much I fell in love with this book. I have been struggling on trying to find the right words, but no matter what I say, it would not do this book the justice it deserves. Adeline suffers from epilepsy, but she doesn't let her slow her down. While on a blind date, her guide dog Coco alerts her that she is about to have a seizure. she needs to get somewhere safe, but her blind date abandons her. Enter Dean, aka Crash. he exists Adeline to his for station across the street and the rest is history. Crash immediately knows that Adeline I'd his and will do everything to win her heart. This book had it all: action, romance, suspense. Susan Stoker knows how to make you fall in love with each core character and keeps you coming back for more
I don't usually write reviews but this was a great book! It was a sweet and an easy read that was a great rainy day book. Dean (Crash) was a great Hero and really made you love him with the heroine Adeline who has epilepsy. This doesn't turn him off or even make him hesitate. It isn't an instant love book even though he is immediately attracted to her and wants to get to know her. They really take their time getting to know each other before they jump into anything which I love in a book.
This is a book in an ongoing series but if you haven't read the others I don't think it is a problem because the other characters from the other books are just supporting characters(friends). I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series!
Omg this book was absolutely amazing. I could not stop reading this book until the end. I had really loved and enjoyed reading this book. Susan Stoker has written another awesome book. I totally love Susan Stoker's books at least the ones that I've read. I would highly reccomend this book. I had voluntary read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Loved this book! I have loved all the books in this series and this one did not disappoint me. I don't want to give away too much of the story so let me just say that the way Dean adores Adeline was wonderful to read. Plus, I have to love any book with a dog as a main character. As I said, loved this book.
Can we bottle the chief and Dean and sell their muchness. These two one dark and broody but kind and attentive and the other swoon city. Dean will just grab you and have you swooning the whole time. The first date he planned with Adeline so so beautiful and amazing. His understanding and support was nothing short of awesome. He truly is one of a kind. Yes a wee bit protective but in a good way. he doesn’t want to see anything happen to Adeline for when he first met her he saw her rejected and at her most vulnerable and felt she was the one for him from the beginning.
Adeline is strong and independent. Coco the most awesome dog helped her to get to this point. She is also very vulnerable as is Dean in a way and scared. She has epilepsy and is facing a tough decision as to what to do about it. She is also in a job she loves but hates and didn’t expect to have Dean fall in her lap the way he did. He is all she could ask for and it does scare her. As they discover each other and their love, her boss gets a little bit odd. Or odder and she is feeling uneasy. All the while her epilepsy is becoming more of a issue. And Dean is there for her. He is attentive, loving, sexy and gentle. Kind and caring. And understanding. At times he drives Adeline crazy and she does snap at him but he isn’t this way to hurt her. He just genuinely is a great guy and loves her with all he is.
These two have some insane chemistry and are fun together as well. They understand each other and just click. Dean is super awesome and sexy. Adeline kind and fun. they are both a little adventurous and love to stay at home and just be. That to me is the most romantic times. When you are intimate but not. You learn more about the one you are with and these two do this in spades. We see them grow individually and together. Adeline learns to have more confidence in herself and see that she is loved no matter what. Dean learns to be less protective and show that he sees Adeline has strength and his trust. He respects and supports her no matter what. So sexy to see. Can say seeing him stick by her no matter what had me swoon for Dean.
Their journey to a happy ending is filled with love, fun times, sexy moments, a amazing dog, dangerous scary moments for Adeline and a man that supports and is there no matter what and it isn’t just Dean who is that. Chief is there for Dean and Adeline as well. Can’t wait for his story. The story is intimate and filled with understanding and emotion. Dean will have you swoon. Adeline have you smile and the Chief you just wonder what is behind those eyes and personality. A wonderfully written, fun and swoony story of love, understanding and trust. Of finding the one meant for you and holding on with patience, kindness, respect and support. A great read and truly look forward to Chief’s story.
Adeline has had some bad dates, but when her most recent one leaves her alone in a restaurant when she's about to have a seizure, firefighter Dean "Crash" Christopherson comes to the rescue, taking her over to the fire station for privacy and safety. Yes, it's insta-love, but this is particularly well written instalove. The medical facts are handled well, as is the use of her service dog. This is one of my favorite Susan Stoker books, which might have been a five star if the "villain" had been more developed. Adeline's boss isn't just a creepy pervert, he has multiple personalities and one of them really wants to rape her, since she's rejected his advances. Despite that, it's still a wonderful book worth reading.
Adeline is tired of being different. Her epileptic seizures are increasing in frequency, and her service dog Coco is working overtime alerting her to their onset. When Dean sees Adeline in the restaurant and realises that she needs help, he steps up and offers his assistance. Their attraction grows and Adeline must make a decision on what to do about her seizures. This is a beautiful story that grabs you from the beginning and keeps your interest the entire way through.
I am seriously thinking I need to move to San Antonio lol These books are hot as hell and that's saying something when a fireman is involved :-) Dean and Adeline were wonderful, beautiful and seriously sexy together another fantastic story by Susan Stoker i am beyond addicted to her books.
I really wanted to like this one. But I just couldn't get past the 55 gajillion times the male MC calls the female MC "beautiful" as a descriptor and as a nickname. It was just too much.
I know that may not be a huge deal for many but it drove me nuts and there were other things that took away from my enjoyment of the story.
This was super sweet. There were a few moments I was like “really?” but overall it was a great read! I love how supportive Dean is with Adeline’s seizures and overall health. Coco is the sweetest pup.
