Look, See the Bird! is a beautifully illustrated children's book which seeks to not only promote curiosity in children about the natural world around them, but also to establish the universal quality of having a connection with nature. Look, See the Bird! follows children in a variety of locations, all of whom are learning about local birds and their habits.
Beginning with Ruben and his sister Maria, who have decided to spend their day bird-watching in the coffee plants of their Nicaraguan farm, the story wings towards locations as far removed as Alabama and Ontario, lighting down briefly along the way as children the world over join with Ruben and Maria in spirit, looking for birds in their own backyards. Each time, the question is asked by one child to another: "Look! See the bird?" And each time, the children are treated to the sight of a majestic bird native to their home.
This unifying question joins the children on the page with the children holding the book, inviting them to look outside, and see what they can see!
I just received Look, See the Bird as a winner in a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you!
I think this book is adorable and engaging on many levels. The writing is intelligent yet age appropriate, the story line/subject is interesting and promotes further exploration and the illustrations are lovely. All together Look, See the Bird is a 5 star children's book.
Disclaimer: I received this book for free through a Goodreads' giveaway.
This is a beautifully illustrated and informative book about birds, that takes the reader on a journey from a coffee farm in Nicaragua to multiple places in North America. The first part of the book is a story that introduces the reader to different types of birds and the children who spot them (including children picking berries, others playing on the beach, or sitting on a bench with their grandfather). The next part includes factual information about birds in the form of a short Q&A and bird illustrations with descriptions beneath. This book is meant for the curious individual who loves birds and nature in general, and especially one who is interested in faraway places. It provides factual information in a fictional format, that isn't so much a running narrative, but more a series of short vignettes of peoples' lives.
I can't wait to share this with my friend's daughter, as I know she will love it. She's still a bit young to understand all of the information, but will love the illustrations, especially because she's into animals. This is a great book to grow up with, as her interests will move from the illustrations to the actual story and information.
