Since 2006, New York Times bestseller Donna Jones Alward has enchanted readers with stories of happy endings and homecomings that have won several awards and been translated into over a dozen languages. She’s worked as an administrative assistant, teaching assistant, in retail and as a stay-at-home-mom, but always knew her degree in English Literature would pay off, as she is now happy to be a full-time writer. Her new historical fiction tales blend her love of history with characters who step beyond their biggest fears to claim the lives they desire.
Donna currently lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, with her husband and cats. You can often find her near the water, either kayaking on the lake or walking the sandy beaches to refill her creative well.
Falling for Mr. Dark and Handsome is by Donna Alward Maggie Taylor finally has her life like she likes it- safe and sensible. She runs a bed and breakfast during tourist season. She is planning on finally taking a vacation when her daughter, home from college, rents a room out of season to Ranger Nate Griffith. As much as Maggie would like to say no to him, she needs the money. Nate is on leave from his job as a ranger. He needs to rest in a quiet place and this bed and breakfast fits the bill. In reality, he is working on a drug case and the man he is seeking lives in the area. He can’t tell Maggie the truth without putting her in danger. What will happen when Maggie finds out the truth? Will it involve her daughter who has gone back to college? What will she do about the attraction between herself and Nate?
This was just... bad. I was leaning toward two stars, but the ending was entirely unforgiveable.
First off, the characters were hard to read. Conversations between them were stilted and awkward at best, and not in a cute way. It would be one thing if they took one look at each other and chalked it up to lust, but we're supposed to believe that in-between shallow conversations and interactions that they managed to fall for one another?
Also, I understand the heroine had it rough, but she overreacted on more than one occasion. And the hero, he's supposed to be doing a job but is entirely unprofessional about it. Given that the romance in this was a complete bust, these details created a distraction that tipped the scales from "this book is okay I guess..." to "wtf am I reading?!"
I enjoyed this story. Not as much as some of Donna's other ones for some reason but that is alright, it was still a good read. Funny how that works. I absolutely loved 'Soldier's Homecoming' and 'Hired by a Cowboy'. loved them. Will read them again and again pouring over each word. That type of loved. But this one...it just didn't quite click for me right off and stayed that way all through. And wouldn't you know it, this story was a CataRomance Award winner. :-) Oh well. I can't wait to get started on her newest release, 'The Rancher's Runaway Princess'. :-)
Falling for Mr. Dark and Dangerous by Donna Alward is an awesome read. Ms Alward has crafted a wonderful small town story with plenty of suspense, drama, humor and just a bit of steam. Maggie and Nate's story is well written and a bit of a fast paced nail biter. I enjoyed Falling for Mr. Dark and Dangerous and look forward to reading more from Donna Alward in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I won a copy of this book from a Facebook contest.
Maggie is hoping for a nice winter vacation, but her daughter books Nate into her Bed and Breakfast for an long stay. Says on a leave from his job, but something just don't seem right.
Maggie feels Nate is hiding something from the beginning and don't figure out for awhile. But Maggie has secrets also. Could they work thru these and make it.
with the truth as additional secrets and intrigue associated with undercover cops.. However, the title says it is part of the Windover Ranch series and the only thing related was that it was set in Canada, so that was disappointing
A interesting story of a widow and an undercover U S Marshall fighting an attraction when he ends up at her Bed and Breakfast. An interesting story as the woman is nearly ten years older than the man.
Very enjoyable read, extremely hard to put down. The author is very talented at drawing her reader into the story, believable dialogue. I certainly look for more books by her.
Something a bit different, the lady is a little older in this story, but why not? age is just a number and as long as people are happy that is all that counts, enjoyed reading this one.
Its a 3.5 book. Cute with ups and downs. Liked the end and the Marshal. This was an easy read and interesting . I liked the story taking place in Canada.
The main characters are a "young" and handsome policeman 👮🏻 and the "mature" and widow who owns a hostel 🛎️. He comes into her life undercover while he's investigating 🔎 a drug dealer and murderer 🗡️ who MAY have ties to the woman 👩🏻💼and her daughter👩🏻💻.
The plot to some extent "convinces" me 😐, but there are things that are NOT that well resolved. 😒
For example, let's begin from the basis that he ends up staying there 🏨 because the owner's 18 YEAR OLD daughter decides 🤔. Yes, you read that right. 👀 The young woman takes the reservation ☎️ even knowing that her own mother usually takes that time of year on vacation ... 🤨 We all understand that she can't leave him without accommodation 🤷🏻♀️, but the daughter treats her as if she were the mother and the mother acts like a child in such a circumstance ... 🤦🏻♀️ And from then on ... 😕 The "love" relationship is built in a VERY BRIEF period of time based on concealment 🤫, true stockings 📏 and lies 🗣️ ... She forgives 🙏🏾 and excuses everything easily. In that regard, anyone in her situation would at least rethink things a little more 🤔. But no ... She, in the blink of an eye 👁️, overcomes what happened to her late husband ⚰️, her aversion 🙅🏻♀️ and fear 😱 of risky trades ☣️, she leaves her stable and quiet life ☕ to move with him 🚛 and she decides to allow her young daughter to fully take control 🏇 of her own life.
The secondary character, the town policeman? 🤐
That "feminism" in the XXI century ... 😶 And I'm not saying it because female main character is the "oldest" in this history ... 😶

This December, I’ve been reading gobs of Alward’s books. I loved her Darling, VT series and Jewel Cove, ME series. But this one, I really struggled to engage with. I’m not sure if it was the cowboy romance, the “secrets” that ended up not being secrets to anyone… not my favorite, but I’ll probably try the next in the series anyway.
This was a nice story. Maggie is running a B &B her daughter takes a reservation and he's not what Maggie expected. He isn't there for rest, he isn't there for the sight, he's there for an assignment. Can they work it out? Can he convince her to give them a chance?
Such a beautiful story! It had a slow start. I almost started to skim through it but I’m glad I didn’t! It really began to heat up. It very clean but a beautiful beautifully written love not lust story!!!
The story line was pretty good, but the passage of time wasn't very clear. All the events occurred over a period of weeks, but the wording made it seem like days.
This was a 3.5 Harlequin romance. The storyline was interesting and different. Maggie had withdrawn from any contact with love after her husband was killed and Nate was looking for a dangerous man as a U.S. Marshall but was not ready for what he found.
