At 84 pages this definitely falls into the category of a brief introduction. As such, it is pretty good, and anyone interested in beginning an investigation of the life of the incredibly innovative and influential "Papa" Haydn will find this a valuable starting point. Also included are two appendices, one detailing the Haydn catalogue of works and the other a list of recommended recordings. Published in 1997, the second list is obsolete, but not completely valueless as many of those recordings are still available.

I chose this book for a composer sketchI needed to write for a music appreciation class I am taking. Actually, the biography was great because it was only 108 pages and the writing is fairly good.
