The statistics are sobering: between 80 and 90 percent of kids who have grown up in the church are leaving the church after age eighteen. Children slipping away into a culture that tells them the Bible isn't true, sin is no big deal, God isn't real, or there are many ways to get into heaven. Whether parents may blame themselves or the culture, the result is the same: lost ...more

An increasing body of research suggests that young people are leaving the church. Churchgoers don’t need the research to tell them what they see playing out in their own congregations.

As a person of faith, I care deeply about this phenomenon. As a youth pastor, this phenomenon breaks my heart.

For those reasons, I was excited to read Hope for the Prodigal: Bringing the Lost, Wandering, and Rebellious Home by Jim Putnam with Bill Putnam.

That said, this book isn’t what I expected. For me, the word

Jim Putnam and his father Bill Putnam have written the book Hope for the Prodigal, Bringing The Lost, Wandering and Rebellious Home out of their own deeply personal experiences. They were each prodigals themselves as children and young adults, and some of their own children have been prodigals. They say “We have all been prodigals to one degree or another. This is a book about caring about them” (Hope For The Prodigal: Bringing the Lost, Wandering and Rebellious Home By Jim Putman with Bill Putm ...more

It isn't a secret that the church is dying. More than ever young people are walking away the from the church and Hope For the Prodigal begins to address the staggering and eye opening statistics that the church needs to do something different or it won't be in existence anymore. The Christian community as a whole is beginning to see the decline and not only is it beginning to see a decline, but a movement of hurt people are on the rise as the Christian community fails to help and love people. I am reviewing a copy of Hope For the Prodigal by Baker Books and Netgalley:

The sad reality is that eighty to ninety percent of kids who have grown up in the church are leaving the church after eighteen, often lost to a culture that tells them the Bible isn't true, and a media that often conveys the Bible as bigoted

The authors remind us that we are all Prod

This was a phenomenal book. I absolutely recommend it to anyone searching for a book to read. If you’re a Christian this book offers all sorts of insight into how you can help prodigals return to their faith in Christ and be restored into the community of faith.
Jim and Bill use their own faith journeys, as well as stories from their ministry experience, to show prodigal stories that have gone well and some that have not gone so well. Their stories speak for themselves and bring this book to li

Hope for the Prodigal: Bringing the Lost, Wandering and Rebellious Home is an interesting read. I honestly am not sure how to review this book. I feel that this book would be a good read for parents who have children who were raised in church but have decided to leave. Also, this would be a good read for churches and could help families who have love ones they would love to welcome back. The book is easy to follow with scripture and reflection in each chapter. A very eye opening book.
