I gave this five stars because it was such an interesting window into being a soldier in the Civil War. It was fascinating to me that slavery was hardly mentioned, while defending their homeland seemed to be more of a motivation. And those soldiers were tough! The conditions were challenging, not to mention being shot at with great frequency. I have a completely new appreciation for the importance of outfitting and just plain feeding the troops. That is no small thing. And they were paid regularly throughout, too. I'm sure I missed the significance of a lot of the generals and battles because my knowledge base is pretty thin, so someone steeped in the history would have gotten even more out of it.
