OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

Just got back from two weeks in Croatia with this book as our main guide. We used the walking tours provided for Zagreb and Split, which I really liked. We also ate at a number of the recommended restaurants throughout Croatia and enjoyed our meals. We found our hotels through another means but I cross-referenced with this book. Of the hotels that were in the book, I would say the reviews were pretty accurate. Overall, our trip was wonderful and I believe this guide book enhanced our experiences by giving us focus in cities we had never been to before.

Lots of good information. A good book to take on your vacation as a guidebook.

I'm one of those old backpackers who still carries around a paper copy of the LP when I go to a new country. This one does a good job, as per usual, covering the main sights, transportation issues, and baseline minimum of cultural awareness that you might want if you're going to spend a few weeks in a new nation. The only thing I'd caution about using this guide is that, as it is the most recent, yet still the last pre-pandemic edition of the book published, the prices listed, especially in the south (Dubrovnik is basically theme park prices on everything from museums to lodging to supermarkets), are significantly off, on the order of 30% in high season.

Actually I know it is a travel guide but it has a lot of very is easy to read history about the region. I am really reading it for fantasy purposes but one day I know I will end up there. The struggle of this country and the whole region is very significant in world history and even more so in contemporary world history. It really paints a picture about the resilience the people who live there, very in the moment sometimes awkward maybe aloofness (in a very positive sense) that they know they have and don't give a shit about just living for the moment. Oh yeah, an expansive selection of wines and National Parks. I am the type of gal who likes to put a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine, a camera and lots of film, and moldly sharp block of cheese into my messenger bag in order to get lost. My motto: wine and nat'l parks.

I don’t really like how this book was organized; it had more of a theme about types of activities than regions, and I would have liked more detail about how to get specifically from place to place and sight to sight. I’ve read other guidebooks that give better advice on how to find everything and how to get the best for your money. However, there is good information about outdoor activities in particular, tips for traveling with children to Croatia, beautiful color photos, nice road maps, and welcome information about toilets.

I found that the Lonely Planet website was significantly more useful when planning our trip, and that didn't cost me $25. Though still fun to look at and flip through when I get excited for the vacation.

Отличный путеводитель, описывающий только наиболее интересные достопримечательности для туристов, приезжающих на несколько недель в Хорватию. Замечательная общая часть, посвященная истории и культуре данного государства.

While it provides with great recommendations like any other lonely planet book, the prices mentioned needs to be updated, infact I have the 2022 edition yet the prices mentioned in the book are atleast 50% less than the reality!

This book really added texture to our trip to Croatia. It was informative, easy to read and detailed. It is the sort of book I will be using on subsequent trips to this beautiful country.

Very basic and not enough detail for someone actually going there. Book has lots of links that do not work.

Got this book for my mom who is visiting Croatia for the first time. I read through it and highlighted activities and notes that were relevant to her. I wish there was an overview itinerary of what 2 weeks around all regions of Croatia would look like. Mentioned skiing 1 time but didn’t list information about slopes or where to go.

The revised edition of the Lonely Planet Croatia was very useful and well-written. It's top choices were spot on, and I enjoyed the candid and honest approach to guiding us through our trip. What it lacked was better regional maps and it largely dismissed the smaller towns, not bothering to offer maps for them. For a real "off-the-main-road" kind of traveler, you need that.

Although I only went to Split, Croatia, I purchased the LP book on a whim. The history, food, and visitor section helped me get around. The restaurant reviews were spot on! I took a friend, who has lived in Split, to a restaurant recommended and we were both impressed.
