Gripping Private Eye detective stories set in the industrial North. Three books in one!
With the atmosphere of urban decline and inner-city violence, these three murder mysteries are set in the metropolitan area of Salford, Manchester - one of the most deprived areas in England.
Ex-rugby player turned social worker Gus Keane is a man who, faced with the disinterest of the Police, becomes a private investigator in order to find out who murdered his boss. Not surprisingly, law enforcement don't want someone meddling in the case, but increasingly they turn to Keane's local knowledge to bring the culprit to justice.
Three related detective mysteries in one bumper volume on Kindle
As reviewers have remarked, these books form a trilogy but each can be read on its own, without having read the others. This is partly because Gus Keane is an immediately likeable detective: he has his faults, and is always getting into trouble; but he has a way of getting the truth out of people and, hardened to the rough world of Salford, his local knowledge is key.
THE THREE BOOKS IN THE TRILOGY
TACKLING DEATH: A pacey pulp Private Eye thriller set in a northern English town
Ex-rugby football player turned social worker Gus Keane is getting ready for retirement when his boss gets murdered. Finding himself under suspicion, Keane turns private detective to find out the truth. But when he closes in on the killer will Keane come out on top or fall victim to the murderer’s desperate moves?
DEAD CERTAINTY: Social worker turned Private Eye Gus Keane returns in this gripping murder mystery
If something happens in Salford, Manchester, it is generally bad news and when two dead bodies turn up within a few hours of one another, it is no exception. With the local force stretched to the limits and firing blanks ex-rugby player Gus Keane is asked to step in to help find the culprits. What follows is an ever thickening plot as Keane gradually begins to unravel a mystery from Salford's shady past.
FALLING FOUL: Private investigator Gus Keane is back with a difficult new case to solve
With his ex-wife appearing back on the scene and relations with his girlfriend Marti troubled, the murder of one of Gus Keane's colleagues comes at a really bad time. Novellas about Gus Keans, a social worker in the U.K. town of Salford who becomes an amateur detective and solves some serious crimes.
If a writer wants a main character to not be a police officer but still solve crimes, a social worker is a handy persona because he/she meets a wide cross section of people, is regularly exposed through clients to activity that is suspicious, even criminal.
Have read book one in this box set. I have mixed views. The Novel is well written, but much too gritty for me. The storyline is good, many characters and overlapping stories but I found it hard to concentrate. I kept comIng back to finish. Will attempt the remaining two books in the box set at a later time.
This book encompasses the adventures of retired social worker and private investigator, Gus Keane. The stories are fascinating, the plots are good and the characters are memorable. I highly recommend it to other mystery readers.
I really enjoyed these books.Gus is a very likeable guy.and always manages to solve the crime ahead of the police.he has never got over his mumdying when he was a teenager and still visits her grave regularly.
Three short whodunits. Gus Keans is a social worker in the UK town of Salford. He is semi-retired after suffering a stroke. On his last day at the office, his boss is killed, and he is thrown into the hunt for the murderer. These are three well-crafted stories, with humor, good character development, and enough hints that you can figure out the killer if you're paying attention. Well worth reading for those who like whodunits.
For as much as I liked the characters as they seemed real wasn't to stuck over the style possibly as just finished some gritty gruesome material as this was nice n tame which kept in tone with the main characters personality. Would read more
Three exceptional private detective stories set in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Gus Keane is a laid back, slightly cynical council worker who sets up as a private eye when his boss is murdered. Living in one of the most deprived areas of England, an area with one of the highest per capital murder rates in the British Isles, Keane is well equipped for the rough situations he will face. Being an ex-rugby player is an added advantage.
At times dry and sardonic, at others, intimate and warming, these books will appeal to a wide range of readers.
