The diaries are still fascinating with the added element of Alastair Campbell’s mixture of needing to detach himself from the immediacy of his former role with an inability to do so. There’s a bit too much on his running/swimming and the rest but this doesn’t really detract from the overall interest of the diaries. They remain of fundamental importance in trying to understand the twists and turns of the relationship between Blair and Brown as well as the uselessness of the then opposition.

The fifth volume of Alastair Campbell’s diaries are a fascinating read - and the first diaries covering the period after he left his role as Tony Blair’s head of strategic communications. Not that you would know that from this book as Campbell finds himself dragged back into Downing Street to offer advice on hundreds of issues and ends up back there almost full time for the 2005 general election campaign.

A little light on the politics at times - as he leaves Downing Street (although never fully breaks away and returns full time for the 2005 election). Some interesting insights into the role of the modern media, the vulnerability of the Blair administration despite a third successive victory and the continued theme of the ultimate unsuitability of Gordon brown to lead the country. Didn't know just how much discussion there was about firing brown weeks before the election campaign proper. He comes ...more
