This textbook is a fine collection of writings on so-called Eastern religions, providing a wealth of sources for each. The four main areas discussed are.
1) Hindu ways of being religious
2) Buddhist ways of being religious
3) Confucian ways of being religious
4) Taoist ways of being religious
The Introductory essay from Kessler is a fine description of the choices of source material to follow but some of the other introductory essays are bland beyond belief, unnecessarily "making the case" or "defining to death" the most basic of concepts. Even if this is attended for a class in which students have never studied religion, these early essays really seemed like reinventing the wheel type of overkill. Those few essays aside, this is a well-sourced anthology/textbook that would make a fine accompaniment to an early course in comparative study of religions.
