About the author

Whether you’re seven or seventy, the chances are you’ve probably come in contact with one of his many books (150 plus), or cartoons that have appeared in over 200 magazines in the course of his lifetime, including Laugh it Off which was syndicated for 20 years. His comic strip Tuffy, about a little girl who did funny things, was declared essential for national morale during WWII by William Randolph Hearst.

Syd has worked in diverse genres. He had the distinct honor of working with Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen as a contributor of short fiction writing. He was awarded national advertising commissions for large companies such as Chevrolet, Maxwell House Coffee and others. He had his own TV show (Tales of Hoff on CBS), traveled the world as entertainment on cruise ships and entertained children and teachers in schools and libraries across the country.

Hoff, Syd. Danny and the Dinosaur: School Days, EARLY READER. HarperCollins, 2017. $16.99.

The dinosaur really wants to go to school and see what it’s all about. He knows that Danny loves school. When he gets there, he learns his ABC’s and the dinosaur helps Danny’s class learn about measurements (the children measure the dinosaur’s limbs) and about history (the dinosaur tells the class about what life was like 100 million years ago). All in all, it’s an exciting day for both the dinosaur and the kids in Danny’s class.

This is a cute easy reader companion book to Danny and The Dinosaur. Because it’s an easy reader, it’s more of a listing of the things the children and the dinosaur do together during the day, not really a story, which does drag a little and make for a little less excitement.

In the fantasy laden world of picture books, it's so common for a human child to bring along a pet to school, and either nobody notices or else everybody becomes an enthusiastic lover of dogs (or whatever) in the classroom.

By contrast, this book turns out differently. Much as Danny wants his dinosaur-type pet to follow him to school, akin to the lamb in "Mary Had a Little Lamb"...

That doesn't happen as Danny and his dino planned, but there's sure plenty of dinosaur-related merriment for all at school.

FIVE STARS for this highly creative, if not highly plausible, book.

The Dinosaur decides to follow Danny to school, and find out for himself what happens there. Danny's class is happy to see the Dinosaur, and they spend the day together learning science, math, eating lunch, and having recess.

The kiddos really appreciated this one, and why not? Dinosaurs are cool on their own, but dinosaurs seeking an education? Kudos to them! Danny really ought to find out the dinosaur's name though.
