If you’re having a book slump, just read this series!

Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A few years ago the Hidden community was.. well hidden. But now they can wear human forms and live along the humans. Kam, as a jinn, never really had this problem. But her partner died and life is hard as a freelancer catching lost souls. After she gets a big job at the headquarters she meets Ash, a runaway girl who reveals to be more than that.
They both work as a team to solve a murder case they accidentally slipped into.

Kam is a djinn who chases wayward or lost souls for the Hidden Government. Kind of like a bounty hunter capturing souls who have escaped their deceased humans in the belief that they really aren’t dead or are not ready to cross over. Like many jobs today, hers is getting more difficult, more is expected of her and well, her pay grade hasn’t changed. Now broke, with her magic weakened, she has been put on the case of the missing reaper and his loaded soul stone. Who knew she would end up around K ...more

TO CATCH A STOLEN SOUL is the first book in a series based on one of the wonderful characters from the Monster Haven series, Kam the djnn. When we met her, she had an interesting enough backstory that I wished she had her own book. Guess I got my wish with this one! The plot follows Kam on her misadventures being a soul chaser and struggling to make ends meet. While I missed the characters from the Monster Haven series, this story is fun with a whole ne
I love R.L. Naquin's Monster Haven series and was really sad when it ended so you can imagine how excited I was when I found out she was writing a spin off series about my favourite djinn Kam. You don't have to have read the previous series to enjoy this one but I definitely think you'll enjoy it more if you're already a fan, Kam was a big character in the other series and we also get glimpses of a few other familiar faces that just made this even more fun to read.

Kam is a djinn who works as freelance soul chaser for Hidden government. She is sent to Kansas City Region to track down a missing reaper (PS: soul chaser chases runaway soul after someone is dead, reaper is one who gets the soul prior to death). With a young girl, Ash, that Kam befriends after she offers Ash a hitchhike, they both discover that the missing reaper has been murdered as well as a number of Hidden beings. So Kam sets up shop as part of the food truck community to investiga

Kam is a Djinn down on her luck. A piece of her magic was stolen. She has lost her partner (in chasing souls), and she works at a crappy bar to earn some money. What she has is a car that still runs for some reason, and a will do live her own life, on her terms. I liked her. She was so friendly! To everyone, strangers, homeless, she did not care. All were equal in her eyes. The world need happy people like her. Or happy Djinns.

But that is not this story. She gets an assignment that takes her int

I enjoyed this novel a lot. Why is the next book not out yet! Can't wait!
I read Zoey's series a few years ago so I only had a vague recollection of who Kam was or her character. A slow start but it got interesting as the story went along. enjoyed the characters and waiting for more :)

Oh my! I finished this book right before the Coastal Magic Convention and am just now getting back to working on my review! I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to more in this series. I've never picked up a book by R.L. Naquin that didn't grab me... and this was no exception...

Look for my full review to be posted here soon!

Do you know what a binturong smells like?

I do, now.

R.L. Naquin's books are like hot fudge, with or without the ice cream. She has built a world full of magic and magical people, and I love it. She has a gift for description, simile, and metaphor that is right up there with the best of them. "He was short and pudgy with a thin little excuse for a mustache that looked more like he got it from drinking chocolate milk than grew it." Her characters are just like you and me – except that weird and w

I so love the Monster Haven series and am so glad it has a spin off.

This was great, a bit of tension, a dollop of humour, some nicely rounded characters and toast; perfect!

But now I have to wait for the next

Edited to add, I now have this on audio, it's great, I've listened to it a couple of times. The only thing that niggles is the narrators accent on the odd words wri'ten not written etc.
I loved Kam in Monster Haven series. She was fun, quirky and totally kicked butt. I loved her partnership with Darius and what they meant to each other. I was excited to read that she was getting her own spin-off series and I couldn’t wait to see what kind of shenanigans might go down. I was definitely not disappointed. This book had all of the heart and the humor that the Monster Haven books had, but in a completely different, glorious way. Kam is a force to be reckoned with, even if she is a b ...more

I love Naquin’s Monster Haven series. I wasn’t sure if I would like a spin-off. Happily, I really enjoyed it. I also was a big I Dream of Jeannie fan as a kid, so I lived vicariously through Kam. (I haven’t dressed up as a genie yet! ☹) The Toast Genie food truck idea was awesome. I wanted her to yell, “Let them eat toast!” ala Marie Antoinette. Someone’s killing food truck owners. Dead bodies pile up as Kam strives to solve the mystery before all those business men are stuck sitting in the Chic ...more

Read in one day. I always enjoy R.L. Naquin's lighter-side-of-fantasy novels and was delighted to find out that Kam, one of my favorite secondary characters from the Monster Haven books, was getting her own series. I especially enjoyed Kam's friendship with Ash, an almost-eighteen hitchhiker, and their undercover stint running a food truck--since Kam can't cook, they sell... (wait for it)... toast. ...more

Initial Thoughts: This was a really enjoyable paranormal detective drama. Kam is a fascinating and absolutely lovable character. Though tough, she is very tenderhearted and compassionate. The plot flowed well and the humor was throughout. Though the culprit was fairly easy to figure out...there were plenty of twisting nuances that kept the overall novel gripping. With the bit of cliffhanger at the end, I am eager to read the next one. I really like the narrator in this novel. She was able to tru ...more

An eARC of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This review was originally published on my blog The Conversationalist.

This was one of the last books I read for 2016 and I really enjoyed it. Even though urban fantasy remains one of my favourite genres, it can get same-y very easily. I am new to Naquin’s work, but I’m definitely interested to read her other books because I absolutely enjoyed To Catch a Stolen Soul. This book brought me everything I want and lik

To Catch a Stolen Soul is book one in the Djinn Haven series. This series is a spin-off from the Monster Haven series. While you don't necessarily have to read the Monster Haven series first I'd recommend it so you get some background on the world. But you could get by just fine starting here.

Our leading lady Kam is a djinn that works as a soul chaser for the Hidden Government. With not much work left, she works odd jobs in random towns she passes through. So when she gets called out on a missio

A clever if only slightly above average urban fantasy series starter.

Our heroine, Kam is a djinn trapped and in hiding. Her magic is partially stolen and she is always on the edge of survival, moving from job to job.

Until she is called in to investigate a missing person, actually a missing Reaper. A Reaper goes for the souls that don't want to leave. The Reaper disappeared on a mission and his So

At about a 4.5 rating, I've got to say I really enjoyed this. Loved the world that was set up and our protagonist, who's a really endearing and fun person to be around. She's tough, adventurous, social and doesn't allow herself to have too long of a pity party under normal circumstances. The information that updates us on what's going on was a little fast and much, but I kept up, and because it was so consistent, it wasn't hard

First disclaimer : I haven't read the previous series where the main character appeared first. And secondly I only picked up this one (got an ARC in exchange of a review) 'cause I hoped the character on the cover was a WOC/black woman. Now whatever it is, I am glad I picked it cause this was a fun and entertaining book. Kam was such a cool cat! Funny, sensitive, smart caring and badass all in one. I really enjoyed reading about her adventures. I liked Ash too, she was a good side kick, even thou ...more

I loved Monster Haven, and Kam was a favorite character in that series. I'm really looking forward to reading more of this spin-off.

Art has sent Kam out after a missing Reaper. And even more importantly, his soul stone. She finds the reaper, as well as more than she bargained for. Things are a mess at the Food Court Posse, and Kam is just what they need to straighten it out. And she does it while being the same cheerful, slightly crazy Djinn we grew to love in Monster Haven

Fun spin off

R.L. Naquin is back with a great tale about a djinn, a friend of Zoey of Monster in the Closet fame. I devoured that series and I'm thrilled to have a new book. There's plenty of action, good character development and a quirky and interesting plot. Can't wait for the next one!
