About the author

Fumiyo Kōno (こうの史代, Kouno Fumiyo) is a Japanese manga artist. She was born in Hiroshima in 1968 and began drawing manga when she was in junior high school. After moving to Tokyo, she became an assistant to mangaka Katsuyuki Toda, Aki Morino, and Fumiko Tanigawa.
Kōno made her commercial debut in 1995 with Machikado Hana Dayori. She is best known for her manga Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms, winner of the Grand Prize at the 8th Japan Media Arts Festival (2004) and of the New Life Award at the 9th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prizes (2005).

I started this manga with the highest expectation compared to other books I've read this year because of the predecessor Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms won me over and became one of my favourite books in 2018. Tho they're not related in term of plot, the WW2 is the central theme for both of them. And it has been adapted into an animation movie which is an award-winning production.

The story is about Suzu, a young lady living in 1940's Hiroshima, helping her family's business of harvesting seaweed when she was sent to be married to Hojo family's only son in Kure. In this volume, readers would be able to see how she adapted as a daughter in law & learnt how to survive in the time of war in her day to day activities. Despite being told that she is a simpleton by others, Suzu displayed a lot of creativity in her thinking to ease her cores.

This is an easy 5 stars for me. I've learned a lot from the footnotes by the translator about the culture and Japan in general.

Schon lange sorgt die Anime-Adaption von “In this corner of the world” für Aufsehen und gewinnt seit 2016 laufend Preise. Da ist es schwer ganz unvoreingenommen und ohne Erwartungen an den Manga ranzugehen.

Die Handlung beginnt in Suzus Kinderzeit und man lernt sie als sehr verträumtes Mädchen kennen, dass die Welt mit ganz anderen Augen sieht. Diese besondere Art an ihr bleibt auch erhalten und die sympatische junge Frau wird mit einem ihr fremden Mann verheiratet, wodurch sie ihre Familie verlassen muss und nach Kure zieht.

Suzu ist lebensfroh, engagiert und hoffnungslos verträumt, dies wird als ein sehr liebenswürdiger Charakterzug dargestellt und das war auch ein Grund, warum ich zuerst nicht gemerkt habe, dass wir uns hier im Krieg befinden. So ganz nebenbei fließt der Krieg in den Alltagstrott der Bewohner und es ist die Rede von Essensmarken, Rationen und Sparvorgaben vom Staat.

Im ersten Band wird das beschauliche Leben der Familie erzählt, gefühlt mit Fakten und Informationen, wie das Leben um 1940 in Japan ablief. Es ist viel informativer, als ich zunächst gedacht habe, aber nicht anstregend zu lesen oder fixiert auf die historischen Elemente. Am Ende gibt es ein Glossar, dass vieles sehr gut erklärt und mir immer weiter geholfen hat. Die vielen neuen Begriffe haben mich auch nicht beim Lesen gestört, weil alles mit einem gemütlichen Tempo verläuft. Wobei Suzus Ehe doch sehr plötzlich kam und schnell ablief, aber zu der Zeit war es eben so.
Suzu ist die Hauptperson und wir folgen nur ihr im ersten Band, sehen die Dinge aus ihrer Sicht und ja, sie bringt einen auch zum Lachen. Der Humor ist sehr sympatisch, leicht und einfach, was einen sehr schönen Kontrast zum Krieg bringt, der eher im Hintergrund abläuft.

Was manche bemängeln könnten ist, dass es ruhig ist. Hier findet man keine Action oder ähnliches, aber ich denke, dass der Manga noch sehr dramatisch wird und mir emotional zusetzten wird. Schließlich geht es um das alltägliche Leben zu Kriegszeiten, die waren nirgends schön und im ersten Band sieht man bereits Entbehrungen und Veränderungen.
Außerdem sind die Zeichnungen von Kouno schön und simpel, die Gemütlichkeit ausstrahlen und sie verwendet verschiedene Materialien für ihre Zeichnungen, bei einem Kapitel ist es wohl Kohle oder dergleichen was sie verwendet hat.

Eine leichte und liebenswürdige Alltagserzählung zu Zeiten des zweiten Weltkrieges. die einen guten Einblick in die damalige Geschehnisse liefert. Der erste Band ist harmonisch und schön, doch man spürt bereits das aufkommende Unheil und daher hab ich den starken Drang weiter zu lesen! Es ist auch ein Graphic Novel, der mit vielen einfachen Charakteren auftritt und ich bin gespannt, wie der Krieg sich auf die Szenerie und Menschen auswirken wird.

Je suis un peu déçue -
On m'a tellement répété comme quoi c'était une pépite douce amer, qui brisait le cœur et qui faisait pleurer comme jamais... bah en fait non pas tant ? Je me suis fais tellement chier c'est horrible à dire, il y a eu de très beaux moments et c'est vraiment un bon manga... mais je reste complètement déçue ahah je voulais des morts et des déchirements moi.

Cuốn manga đầu tiên mà mình cố gắng cất công đọc chậm nhất có thể, đọc kỹ, đọc từ tốn.
Ngay đầu vào đã khó khăn và vẫn khó khăn: các mốc lịch sử xa lạ gắn liền với rất nhiều nếp sống và sinh hoạt xa lạ thời 1934-1944; các loài thực vật thì lúc nào cũng xa lạ hết trơn; rồi bao nhiêu từ gốc Nhật âm kun ;-; Đọc đoạn đầu về quê hương của Suzu cũng khó hơn đoạn sau khi Suzu kết hôn. Đoạn Suzu làm bếp thì khó theo dõi tiến trình nấu ăn huhu khó nhập tâm với các thứ kiểu này quá trời (￣∀￣).

Cái hay là, tính cách Suzu vừa ngơ ngác vừa mộc mạc lại không phải kiểu xấu tính, thuần phác. Thích vẽ. Thi thoảng mê nô nghịch vui chơi. Quan tâm đến mọi người. Sự chân thật và thường tình của nhân vật này chạm vào lòng mình: nhẹ nhàng, từ tốn, dần dần đậm lên và sâu sắc hơn. Không hề mờ nhạt.

Đời sống thường nhật đối với mình ít khi sống động: nó chết - như thể nó không chuyển động. Nhưng đọc cuốn truyện này, đời sống với mình dần hồi sinh. Mình nhập tâm theo dõi sự sống trong đời sống của Suzu trong truyện. Rồi dần men theo đó, mình nhận ra một nỗi khát khao đã bị ngủ vùi: mình muốn cảm nhận rằng mình cũng là một con người, cũng sống trong đời sống ấy và hoà nhập vào nó.

Nhờ truyện, nhất là đoạn từ khi Suzu sống bên nhà chồng, cho mình cảm giác đời sống thật thiêng liêng và có hồn sống của nó - cái mà mình chưa từng để ý, cảm nhận được. Dần dần, qua sự đọc tình cờ này, mình như được phục sinh rất chậm chạp, để quay về với đời sống. Để thực sự có những xúc chạm với trời đất, cỏ cây, động vật, và con người. Để thực sự cũng sống đời sống của mình, chứ không phải là làm chết chính cuộc đời mình.

🌼「Đọc lần 2」:
Bắt đầu lúc 19h, kết thúc lúc 19h20 cùng ngày.

Do đã đọc lần 1, cốt truyện, từ ngữ, cách trình bày dễ vào dễ hiểu hơn hẳnn. Quả thế, đọc nhanh, thoải mái mà lại cảm thấy hiểu sâu hơn lần 1 chứ hem có hiểu sơ sài đi.

Tập 1 gồm 14 chương: 3 chương đầu về thuở thiếu thời của cô bé Suzu, 11 chương sau về cuộc sống những ngày đầu làm dâu của thiếu nữ Suzu tuổi 16 ở một nơi xa nhà. 3 chương đầu là 3 mốc thời gian cách rất xa nhau, 11 chương sau là diễn tiến cuộc sống tuần tự liền kề nhau.

Những chương cho mình cảm giác về sự sống động của đời sống, về sinh khí của nó là:
・chương 4 - tháng 2/1944 trang 83: Suzu đi họp và tham gia vào hoạt động phân phát nhu yếu phẩm của tổ dân phố. Sự hoà nhập, dễ chấp nhận và thuần phác ấy khiến mình vô cùng cảm động. Bài hát về tình đoàn kết của tổ dân phố chạm đến mình. Khiến mình được tiếp sức để bước ra thế giới và cởi mở, không sợ sệt vớ vẩn những nỗi sợ rằng người ghê ghét, không chấp nhận mình.
・chương 8 - tháng 5/1944 trang 115: Suzu dùng các nhu yếu phẩm của tổ dân phố mà chủ yếu là rau, củ, quả để chuẩn bị các bữa cơm nhà. Động chạm đến việc mình chẳng hiểu gì về việc nhà cửa, về sự tiếp xúc với tạo vật của tạo hoá. Những thức phẩm đó khiến mình có một cái muốn, đó là muốn sờ chạm vào chúng và nâng niu, cùng chúng nấu cơm, tu dưỡng tinh thần.

Nói cách khác, 2 chương này làm phát lộ hạt giống say ngủ trong mình chứ không gieo hạt mới nguyên vào mình.

Vì thế, ưu ái dành cho tập này ★★★★.

J’avais beaucoup aimé découvrir les autres oeuvres de Fumiyo Kouno, Les fleuristes du coin de la rue ainsi que Le pays des cerisiers. J’étais donc très impatiente de découvrir celui ci que je n’avais encore jamais lu. J’aime beaucoup le style de cette mangaka, je trouve ça vraiment hyper beau et agréable à lire. Même en traitant de sujets difficiles, je trouve qu’il y a toujours un sentiment de paix, d’apaisement qui flotte au dessus de ses histoires. Et puis, son style graphique j’en suis vraiment fan, j’adore sa façon de dessiner les personnes. J’ai beau avoir adoré ma lecture, j’ai tout de même quelques petites choses à redire.

Dans ce premier tome, Suzu Urano est née à Hiroshima. Après son mariage elle va vivre dans la famille de son mari à Kure, une ville qui dispose d’un port militaire.
La guerre s’installe et le quotidien devient de plus en plus difficile pour Suzu. Malgré cela, la jeune femme garde une certaine joie de vivre. Mais en 1945 un bombardement va bouleverser sa vie…

On va d’abord parler des choses qui m’ont dérangées pendant ma lecture. Je n’ai eu aucun problème avec l’histoire en elle même mais ma lecture fut assez laborieuse. J’ai trouvé qu’il était assez difficile de réussir à suivre l’histoire. Plusieurs fois je me suis retrouvée complètement perdue et j’avais du mal à m’y retrouver. C’est assez bizarre comme sensation mais par exemple, au niveau des personnages féminins, j’avais vraiment du mal à m’y retrouver.. Je perdais le fil et j’avais du mal à me remettre entièrement dedans. D’ailleurs, je suis certaine qu’il y a des choses que je n’ai pas comprise et que je suis passée complètement à côté. J’en mettrais ma main à couper. Au final, ce premier tome est assez décousu et parfois compliqué à lire dans la compréhension. Sinon du côté de l’histoire, j’ai beaucoup aimé. Ici on suit des japonais pendant la seconde guerre mondiale et j’ai trouvé ça chouette de voir un peu la vie de ceux qui ont vécus la guerre. Et malgré le fait que l’on parle de guerre, de marché noir, de rationnement etc, il y a cette ambiance posée, tout est doux presque dans cette histoire. C’est quelque chose qui rend l’histoire plus agréable à lire et moins difficile vu le thème abordé. J’ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Suzu, elle m’a beaucoup fait rire par moment de part sa maladresse ou le fait qu’elle soit souvent dans la lune. C’est une jeune femme très attachante pour le coup et c’était très agréable de la suivre dans son quotidien chez sa belle famille!

Un premier tome passionnant à lire mais qui m’a tout de même parfois donné du fil à retordre! Quelques problèmes de compréhension, l’histoire me semble parfois un peu décousue, j’ai eu plusieurs fois du mal à m’y retrouver. Mais malgré ça, ce fut une chouette lecture en tout cas. J���ai apprécié ce premier tome et je vais tout de même lire le second et dernier tome. En espérant que cette fois ci, je comprenne absolument tout!

Сьогодні я хочу поговорити про дійсно унікальну манґу. Вона вражає своєю простотою, реальністю, чесністю. «У цьому куточку світу» — розповідь про звичайних людей, яким доводиться виживати в дуже складні часи.

Судзу Урано — головна героїня історії. Завжди замріяна, трохи розсіяна та незграбна, але попри те дуже щира та добра дівчина. А ще вона дуже любить малювати, і робить це настільки вправно, що своїми невеличкими замальовками могла вразити найчерствіше серце.

Проте, як це було заведено в Японії 40-х років, замість олівців та паперу на Судзу чекав інший шлях — одруження, діти та невпинна праця на благо родини нареченого. Тож, в лютому 1944 року, Судзу виходить заміж за Шюсаку Ходжьо та переїжджає до Хірошіми. Там у дівчини починається нове, непросте життя. Кожен день був сповнений викликами, проблемами та важкою працею.

Та все ж, невістка з усіх сил старалась ставати кращою, налагоджувати зв’язки з новою громадою, бути доброю до свекрів та чоловіка. Не завжди все йшло гладко, проте своїм добрим серцем Судзу зачаровувала людей настільки, що ті й не сердились, якщо випадково отримають коромислом по голові. Навіть сестра Кейко, яка спочатку була ворожа до братової, з часом стала лагідніше до дівчини.

Попри всі труднощі, життя Судзу не було суцільним мороком. Вона знаходила красу там, де інші бачили лише втому: у блиску моря, у проростаючих зернах на городі, у тихій злагоді звичайного дня. І хоч війна невпинно підповзала все ближче, її світ ще тримався на маленьких радощах — на посмішці Шюсаку, на коротких прогулянках, на можливості взяти до рук олівець.

Манґа «У цьому куточку світу» чесно показує, яким було життя звичайних людей у важкі воєнні часи. Відсутність базових продуктів, палива, одягу, нескінченні черги, економія на кожній дрібниці. Сучасній людині важко уявити, що розсипаний цукор може стати маленькою домашньою катастрофою. Він — останній в домі, а на чорному ринку за найменшу порцію потрібно віддати ледь не всю місячну зарплатню.

І нехай простенький візуальний стиль не вводить вас в оману. За цими малюнками ховається глибока, відверта, іноді кумедна, іноді навіть тривожна розповідь про молоду жінку, яка просто намагається знайти своє місце. Судзу з подивом вчиться жити у світі, який буквально розсипається під її ногами, і все одно знаходить у ньому місце для маленьких радощів.

Я настільки прикипіла до мрійливої Судзу, що фінал першого тому вразив і трохи налякав мене. Тепер сподіваюсь, що помилилась у своїх здогадках. З нетерпінням чекаю другий том, який завершить історію сім’ї Ходжьо, що живе в Хірошімі.

If you get read this, a tear may draw itself down your cheek, and if you’re the strong type, a wave of regret and sorrow.
The book tells the story of the young Urano Suzu, a girl who spent her childhood in Hiroshima but later moved after a sudden marriage proposal during the World War II era of Japan. The book contains many references to Japanese culture and traditions, but many citations offer context for the unaware. If you are considering reading manga, this would be an excellent start. It provides plenty of information without delving into exposition. Whether or not the book is historically accurate or not I cannot say, but judging from the author’s afterword, a lot of work went into researching everything.
The artwork is absolutely gorgeous and perfectly captures the time period and various locations. I loved how Suzu was essentially the artist creating these scenes. When she sketches a picture of a train station, the panels zoom out to show us not only the location, but her artwork as well. There’s even a scene near the end (which I shall not spoil) where the artwork changed to reflect her feelings.
My biggest critique deals in the pacing. This book is very “slice of life”-y and that means we end up with scenes of characters performing specific jobs or tasks, while living a day to life in the midst of a war. There are bits that despite their pure charm feel too dragged out or even unnecessary.
If you want a version of the book with all that cut out, I’d recommend the movie adaptation. Just remember that certain scenes, characters, and moments that were important in the manga were also cut out due to time constraints.
Overall, this book is pretty good!

“Ở một góc nhân gian” là câu chuyện cuộc đời của một cô bé sống ở Hiroshima trong thời kì Chiến tranh thế giới thứ II, trước và trong khi thành phố hứng chịu sức tàn phá nặng nề của bom nguyên tử. Tuy không đả động gì đến sự tàn khốc nơi chiến trường, chỉ tập trung khắc họa những cảnh đời thường nơi hậu phương, tác phẩm đã mang đến một góc nhìn hiện thực về sự mất mát của những con người trong thời chiến cũng như tinh thần yêu nước và sự kiên cường của họ.

Bằng nét vẽ biểu cảm cao độ và tận dụng tối đa sức kể của hình ảnh, truyện đưa chúng ta đến với nền văn hóa Nhật Bản xưa với những truyền thống và phong tục thú vị. Tuy nhiên, việc đi quá sâu vào những tiểu tiết khiến mạch truyện hơi chậm và có phần lan man. Ở các phần sau thì truyện sẽ nhanh hơn, nên bạn hãy kiên nhẫn đọc nhé.

Phố chiều lặng gió Mênh mang anh đào là một câu chuyện khác, diễn ra mười năm sau ngày bom rơi. Nỗi đau lúc này lại mang hình hài khác khi di chứng phóng xạ của bom nguyên tử nằm trong cơ thể những người năm xưa. Bệnh tật khiến họ ra đi khi tuổi đời còn rất trẻ, khi tình cảm lứa đôi còn chưa thành, và chưa được tận hưởng cuộc sống hòa bình. Chiến tranh đã qua nhưng những hậu quả và mất mát để lại thì vẫn mãi còn đó.

Trái ngược với tên gọi đậm chất lãng mạn và bình yên của nó, “Ở một góc nhân gian” và “Phố chiều lặng gió Mênh mang anh đào” là hai manga về chiến tranh rất đáng đọc và sẽ để lại trong lòng bạn những cảm giác man mác buồn.

On suit la vie d'une petite fille faisant partie d'une famille fabriquant des algues séchées, son grand frère va partir à la guerre et elle reste avec sa petite soeur pour aider les parents, aller à l'école et grandir jusqu'au jour où elle se rend à la ville vendre des algues et se fait kidnapper. Avec le garçon qui est prisonnier avec elle, elle va s'enfuir. Quelques années après, elle reçoit une demande de mariage et doit quitter sa maison pour aller dans celle de sa belle famille. Elle va devoir s'accomoder de sa belle-soeur exigeante et de sa belle-mère qui s'est blessée. Elle va se retrouver à tout devoir faire selon leurs manières, faire en sorte que tout se passe bien malgré la guerre qui continue, les rationnements. Elle est très tête en l'air et maladroite mais volontaire malgré tout. Une chronique touchante à une époque difficile.

La belle et dure réalité d’une vie

Il est difficile de faire un commentaire sur ce manga tant il vient vous tenir aux tripes.

Nous suivons l’histoire d’une jeune fille qui se marie dans le Japon des années 1940. Bien vite, la guerre prend de plus en plus de place dans sa vie, et dans celle de son mari, alors que le Japon est en train de perdre la guerre.

Il ne s’agit pas d’une histoire désespérée ou apocalyptique. Il ne s’agit pas non plus d’un manga « d’espoir ». Mais plutôt d’une peinture fidèle d’une époque et d’une femme qui avance, qui tente de s’adapter à son époque sans se trahir elle-même. Elle tombe et se relève en ne se souvenant que des bons moments…

Cette première moitié de récit est drôle, touchant et enrichissant. Bien que les dessins soient originaux (le style ne plaira pas à tout le monde), l’histoire qui y est racontée vaut bien votre lecture.

題名は聞いたことがあったので、図書館で見つけたので借りてみた。
素朴な絵で語られる、WW2直前の広島や呉に暮らす少女の物語。
絵が素朴すぎて、題名の「19年」等が、1919年なのか、明治なのか大正なのか昭和なのか分からなかったけれど、だんだん戦争の影が見えて来たので、やっとわかった。
確かに、70年以上昔の牧歌的な日本の日常が描かれていて、懐かしく感じる人もいるかもしれない。
全てが単純で、すでに決められていて、口うるさく「ポリティカリーコレクト」な事を説教しない時代。
偏見だろうけど、保守的な人は特に好きそう。

私は正直イマイチだった。
行間で読ませる系の漫画だし、絵も好みではないし、日常的すぎてつまらない。
せっかくフィクションなんだし、もっとドラマチックな展開があったらいいのにな、と。
（だから私は日常系でも少しだけファンタジーが混ざってるのが好きなんだ）

…というか、アニメの予告を見て気づいたが、日本の「耐え忍ぶ美徳」みたいな、閉塞感が嫌なんだ。
美化して描いてるし、悪い内容ではないんだろうが、何だろう…嫌だ。
（アニメが宮崎駿作品だったら絶対好きな感じになってたと思う）

図書館に上中下全て揃ってるし、その前日談？的な短編もあるので、これを機に全て読んでみようと思う。
けれど、「続きが気になって仕方がない！」系ではない。
アニメ化されたんだっけ。どんな感じなんだろう。

L'anime est tellement riche historiquement et culturellement qu'un spectateur français y sera probablement un peu perdu (j'ai pris la culture du nori pour de la fabrication de papier, dans un premier temps; une belle-soeur pour une belle-tante; et un mariage pour un enterrement, entre autres.) Le manga est très pédagogique (avec notes, cartes simplifiées...) et aide à mieux comprendre le contexte. Il est remarquablement documenté (Fumiyo Kouno cite ses sources à la fin du deuxième volume.) Si vous êtes passionné d'Hiroshima (ou du Japon en général), c'est vraiment une lecture à ne pas manquer, en attendant (espérons le) la sortie prochaine en DVD de la version longue de l'excellent anime.

This manga was a very well researched-insight into how Japanese civilians lived during WWII. The characters are full of life, and do all they can to survive. In the 3rd volume, is a long bibliography that the manga-ka used to write the story.

This is a heartfelt slice-of-life graphic novel about a clumsy, well-meaning young woman faced with many challenges. I love how historical events are woven into the plot without diluting the main storyline. Highly recommended.

Bản Anime xem màu rất đẹp. Nay thấy manga mua về đọc, truyện nhẹ nhàng, vui buồn nhẹ nhàng. Mình thích mấy bộ truyện tranh ngắn đôi ba tập thế này, không dài lê thê nhưng vẫn đủ cảm xúc.

Một cuốn sách vibe Nhật, dịu nhẹ, ngọt ngào. Mình đã phải thốt lên vài lần rằng: oiii, đáng yêu mà dịu nhẹ như vị kẹo sữa vậy.
Cuốn sách là những mẩu truyện nhỏ xoay quanh cô bé Suzu, một cô bé bị mn trêu là ngơ, đúng là ngốc nhưng ngốc một cách đáng yêu, khiến người ta phải phì cười, và cũng rất tốt bụng, giỏi vẽ nữa.

Felt very bored with this one. Since there’s only 3 volumes, I’ll read them all but it’s meh at best.
