I really liked Jo Verso's Picture it in cross stitch, as it gave clear instructions and allowed the reader to design their own charts. I remember borrowing the book from the library when I was just starting out (about 1996/7) and using many sheets of graph paper. Mind you, I think only one stitched design came out of it, but it allowed me to realized I could do anything I wanted.
