Recommends it for: You know who you are
Guido Ceronetti is an exemplary vestige of the humanist tradition: there painters slice up cadavers and the philosopher reads by Caravaggian candlelight, a skull at his elbow; there the comedian is a symptomologist of venereal and urologic affliction, the tragedian a deviser of serial slaughters and eulogistic pomp; and all who are literate transcribe remedies. It is a tradition macabre and increasingly repellent as a society becomes accustomed to the hieratic profession of medicine and the tabo ...more

Shelves: exalted
I had to let this bathe in brainblood before shelving it. Ceronetti's texture is one of those sparkling originalities, evincible in the shadows of Cioran and Calasso, both extollers of and students to the pagan mysticism splashing in The Silence of the Body's waters. What a fine sector of thought he carves! Anachronism is almost too platitudinous, too pejorative in its navel-gazing implications to serve as a proper demarcation of Ceronetti's raison d'être; his mind, endued with brilliant eruditi ...more

Brilliant collection of notes about the human body, life, death and diseases that author shares with us in his profound and humorous fashion. Nevertheless this is a serious work of modern philosophy.

A few quotes:

Kafka's Diaries include a very simple phrase, almost a pun on death that could indicate the extreme limit of the profoundity man has reached in defining death: „an apparent end that produces real suffering”.

Tattoos were all the rage among whores during the Napoleonic era. On their arms they bore the name of the man who exploited them, and on their bellies the name of their favorite woman. To the moralists who were striving to abolish slavery: behold an intrepid response from indomit

– Guido Ceronetti.

“Even the poorest and most squalid life is an Aeschylean drama, if you think about the tragedy of the bodily functions, the whispering of the secretions, the silence of the organs, the exertions of memory, the groping of the voice, the blood that courses, the mortal miasmas, the riots among microorganisms, the spermatic wars, the cellular eruptions, the pestilences of the nerves, the biochemical predestinations, and the fate that slowly but surely introduces you to the final infection, to the sores, the exploded boils, the snakes of madness, the furious bitches of Hunger.” 1 likes
