My Opinion:
I really liked this story. It was written well and I fell in love with Rose. She came out a widower and instead of conforming to what others wanted, she did what she wanted. She had a free spirit and was a strong character. But, I couldn't get over Philip's vow that he never really made to his brother, just to himself. I don't know. It went to extremes. I could have used a bit less of his brother shadowing the book.

Widowed, Rose Deverill, Duchess of Roxborough, has decided that she will never, ever marry again and she has cultivated a reputation that will assure that will be the case. She’s had many lovers since becoming a widow and she makes sure none of them stay around long enough to get serious with her. I liked her and how much she loved her son, but she felt pretty modern to me.

Philip, the Earl of Cumberland, never expected nor wanted to be the Earl. He is eaten up with grief and guilt at the death of his older brother Robert. You see, it is basically his fault Robert died. Philip escaped into the military and the war – and Robert bought a commission and followed him – to keep him safe. As you learn why Philip did that, you will realize that yes, he does bear a good portion of the guilt for Robert’s death – but – nobody that is close to Philip points out that Robert was a grown man, an Earl, head of the family and yet he made his own decision to follow Philip into war. Philip has vowed he will never marry and produce a family because he feels that would be profiting from Roberts death.

Rose and Philip reconnect on the day of Robert’s funeral. They had been friends since childhood. Rose comforted Philip and they became lovers. With neither of them wanting to marry, that relationship worked really well for them. But then, Rose realizes she wants to marry and she knows, in her heart, that Philip loves her. She doesn’t take into consideration how very stubborn he will be in holding on to his guilt.

When the lives of Rose and her son are threatened, Philip must manage to save them and come to grips with his feelings. He has to decide if he will continue to refuse to be happy or if he will grab it with both hands.

The villain in the book is quite a surprise, but I won’t tell you anything about them.

Since his death, Rose has had some lovers and hasn't hidden the fact. In fact, she's exaggerated it because she doesn't want any other offers of marriage. Rose and Philip reconnect with each other at Robert's (Philip's older brother) funeral. They practically grew up together and Rose has had the biggest crush on him since she was a teenager. It was no hardship to offer him solace from intimacy at a time when he needed a distraction from his pain. Solace that Philip readily accepted especially as he knows that she never wants marriage or to be tied in any way.

That was the start of a steamy, passionate two-year relationship for them. As time goes on Rose realises that she wants nothing more than for Philip to want to marry her. But when she realises that the dream will never become a reality she must put an end to the affair. Not only does that cause much pain for our couple, but it also sets into action a chain of events that finds Rose and her son Drake in dreadful peril. Will Philip be able to save them both, and will he finally realise that his self-imposed punishment is not what Robert would have wanted?

This was such an exciting, emotional, riveting story that I had to read it as quickly as possible to find out how it ended. There was so much drama, and what a shock I had when I realised who the villain in the story is! I loved the passion between Philip and Rose and really wish I could have given Philip a shake when he couldn't seem to get past his martyrdom. I think the author handled the ending very well and most certainly in a believable way.

Oh how I love this book. I could bearly put it down to sleep. I have read every book in The Disgraced Lords series and have love them all but they pale in comparison to this book. I don't know where to start and I wish I could simply said, "just go read this book you will love it" and be done but I can't.

She prayed everyday to be a widow and vowed never to remarry and live as a free woman. After discovering what sexual pleasure was in the following years she become known as the Wicked Widow and she truly could not care.
Rose's best friend is Portia, Philip's sister and as a young girl she fancied herself in love this him. On the day of Robert's funeral hours after everyone had gone she convinces Philip to leave his graveside and go home. On that day he found comfort in Rose's arms, now two years later their affair is still strong but things have changed. Rose truly loves Philip and he her but he will not allow himself any true happiness. He made a promise to himself to make Robert proud of him but he will not marry and the Earldom will go to his brother Thomas or his children. Rose wants more, she wants children, Philip's children. Can she convince him he deserves happiness and love or will he put his guilt in front of everything.
The sexual heat in this book is off the charts. The dialog is witty and characters are fun but also sadness and heartache. There is suspense and twists and turns that I did not see coming. I can't not wait for the next book A Dream of Redemption. ...more

First, although this considered book 7 of the Disgraced Lords series, it easily works as a stand alone unlike the previous books in the series that contained an overarching story. I haven't read a historical romance for so long, I forgot how much I enjoy reading this genre. I spent half of Sunday indulging myself with this read. This is book #7 in a series but I believe they can all be read as stand alone. I was particularly thrilled to be reading a book written by a New Zealand author too.

Rose Deverall was married off at 18 years old, a mother at 19 and widowed by the time she was 20. Her late husband was a lot older than her, imagine marrying someone as old as your gran I haven't read a historical romance for so long, I forgot how much I enjoy reading this genre. Rose Deverall was married off at 18 years old, a mother at 19 and widowed by the time she was 20. Her late husband was a lot older than her, imagine marrying someone as old as your grandfather?! He was a very wealthy man so he has left her in good stead financially and of course she also has a son, who is the apple of her eye.

Now being as young as Rose is now, she doesn't want to be alone for the rest of her life, she wishes to marry again and have more children. There is only one man she wants that with, Philip Flagstaff. He has been her lover the past two years and has a wonderful connection with her son Drake. It is obvious to everyone that Philip adores Rose and their circle of friends are just waiting for a marriage announcement any day now.

Philip is definitely not thinking of marriage to Rose or any woman for that matter. He has no need for a heir and therefore a wife and children will just complicate his life. He definitely has feelings for Rose but he is determined to deny himself the love and happiness he wants but does not deserve. He has imposed this sentence on himself as penance for the death of his late brother. You know how these men can be about their 'sense of duty.'

Philip doesn't want to marry Rose but he doesn't want anyone else to have her either. Rose will not give up on what her heart desires but being a wealthy widow draws attention from other men, some of them do not have good intentions towards her at all. As Rose tries to get to the bottom of the real reason that Philip continues to deny himself a future with her, sinister things are amuck in the ton. People with their own personal agendas are out for themselves and Rose is their target.

Will Philip finally put his head out of his breachered arse and realise that Rose is his future or will he be too late?

Oh my goodness this was a great story to read. It had intrigue and villains, and of course a grand romance. Philip and Rose may have passionate sex when they can find the time with one another but they also found that special someone that they can confide in trust them completely. Both were in agreement when they started this affair that it was only going to be about sex and nothing more. However over time Rose has changed her mind and wants more children and a marriage to put her n better standing for her young son’s future as a duke. Philip has his reasons for never wanting to marry or have his own children and they amicably separate. They both just didn’t realize how hard it is going to be apart when they are constantly running into each other in the same social circles.

The story is totally engaging and I had a hard time putting it down. It swept me away in how much I could feel their love for one another but couldn’t breech the chasm of letting he love her and marry her. I thought there was a good balance of angst and romance, along with suspense and mystery of who was out to hurt Rose and her son. I haven’t read the other stories in the series so I know it can be read without any confusion, or getting snippets of backstory of the other couples from the earlier books. It did however want me to read them and I plan to do that soon. The author wrote a period piece and showed me how much I love historical romances. I fell in love with Rose and Philip and was so happy that they got their happy ending.

A historical romance of the first water. The heroine is a young widowed Duchess and the hero is a newly minted Earl. He has acquired the title as his older brother, the Earl, was killed while saving his life on the battlefield. The story is lusty and poignant. They love each other but both have an aversion to the commitment of marriage. The burning question is can they find away around the emotional baggage they are carrying in abundance.

He believes the only way he can honor his brother is by sacrificing his own happiness. As he is standing there he is approached by Rose Deverill, Duchess of Roxborough. Rose has long admired Philip and had secret hopes to one day marry him, but her father sold her into marriage at 18 to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She endured marriage to him and was rewarded with the birth of her son and widowhood on the same day. She has no desire to remarry and has spent the last few years as a "wicked widow", taking lovers and refusing all offers of marriage.

Fast forward two years, Rose and Philip have been exclusive lovers since that day at the graveside, but now Rose wants more. She loves Philip and wants to marry him, her young son adores him and she would love more children, but she is afraid to broach the topic with Philip. For his part, Philip loves Rose and can't imagine a life without her and if not for his vow, he would marry her. So when the topic comes up, Rose is crushed to learn that Philip does not want to marry. She believes that he will marry, but not her. When a misunderstanding at a ball occurs, these two are forced to have the conversation they have both been dreading. Philip again says he will not marry and Rose tells him that she can no longer be his lover, she will remarry for the sake of her son, but if Philip cannot be her husband, she must be free of him so she can move on. Heartbroken, they spend one last night together and part ways.

Over the next few weeks, they dance around each other and each are subjected to jealousy when they are seen with other people. The tension between them is white hot and again Philip asks Rose to reconsider and again she refuses. When her son's guardian learns of their split, he tells Rose it is time for her to remarry and expects her to find a suitable groom by the time her son goes off to school. Rose is still holding out hope that Philip will change his mind and asks Lord Kirkwood to invite him to his house party. He agrees but tells her if Philip does not propose, she must move on and find someone else. Rose knows there will never be anyone else and has a secret that could force Philip to marry her - but that is not what she wants, she wants him to let go of his guilt and choose her.

At the house party Rose decides that she must tell Philip her secret, but when an attempt is made on her son's life and threats are made to her, she doesn't know who she can turn to. She decides that she must leave and returns to London without telling Philip anything. Philip knows that someone is trying to hurt Drake and enlists the Libertine Scholars to help him. He knows he loves Rose and will do anything to protect her - even if that means they must marry. When he learns she left the house party without telling him, he is furious.

He returns to London to confront Rose and tells her they will marry. Rose refuses, she tells him that she loves him, but if he can't choose her over his guilt, they would both be unhappy. Philip does not take this news well and is determined to change her mind. But before he can the villain strikes again. And Philip must decide if being a martyr is worth losing the only woman he has ever and will ever love.

OMG! This book was amazing, it is well written, flows perfectly, has super hot love scenes, a lot of action, a bit of angst, moments when you want to smack the hero, a couple of misunderstandings, cameos by the former Disgraced Lords and their ladies and finally a hard won HEA.

I highly recommend this book, even if you haven't been following the series, this book is not to be missed!!

Rose is under pressure because she could lose her son, who soon will be turning six; it wouldn’t be proper Rose Deverill enjoys being the Wicked Widow, after a forced marriage to an elderly duke, now she’s free to do as she pleases, and she will never marry again, unless Philip Flagstaff, the new Earl of Cumberland, asks her. Oh that Philip would want the same thing, they are so well-matched, their torrid affair doesn’t seem likely to end soon, even though Philip’s never lasted that long before. Rose is under pressure because she could lose her son, who soon will be turning six; it wouldn’t be proper for a future duke to have a very merry widow as a mother, and Rose could be pressured to marry. Rose and Philip have been involved for two years, but Philip will never forgive himself for the death of his beloved and perfect brother, and he wants his younger brother to inherit the title he never wanted, not himself; he feels he is unworthy of the title.

Oh the sublime, incandescent, luminous, impossibly gorgeous prose, the exquisite details, the wonderful dialogues. While the sex scenes were lovely, I got the idea that Rose and Philip were sexually compatible, but were so many pages really necessary, and her loving him, and him being a selfish, unthinking, spineless twit, the pig-headed idiot; I wanted so slap him and kick him in the pants, I wanted to shake her and tell her to forget that coward, that weakling, and get on with her life. Somebody grew a backbone, and it was something to behold, alas but for a fleeting moment.

I was quietly seething throughout most of the book, and it took me longer to read because I had to set it aside because I was so furious at Philip, the spineless coward. I have to admit I don’t do angst very well. Philip obviously needed professional help, which did not exist at the time, and I couldn’t help but wonder if people with his emotional struggles made themselves, and everyone around them, miserable. Then I started speculating if that’s what Ms. Evans had in mind to show us, still it didn’t make it enjoyable for me. I could not love as Rose did, I don’t have the patience or the fortitude for that type of the heartache that was Philip. Ms. Evans’ prose is indescribably gorgeous, as smooth as a rose petal, as delicate as the finest lace. But Philip!

On the other hand, the mystery part was terrific, and I would never have suspected who the villain was. I also wondered it this book was first meant as a novella, because in my opinion, it would have worked better had it been shorter, and maybe have fewer pages of Philip’s “woe is me”. The ending, while nice, felt rushed to me, as Philip had a sudden epiphany; although it was believable, it happened much too quickly. The writing is truly splendid, but Philip!!!

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I have always enjoyed Ms. Evans books, I think the only book that was not for me, was her last one. This one I did enjoy, just not my favorite, and for the period that we were reading on, I was kind of surprised of the heroine, she was pretty promiscuous, but hey it was a story and to each its own. I have to admit, the way Bronwen Evans writes, keeps you engaged until the end of the book, but the plot of her books have gotten utterly ridiculous.

The deduction that Rose had towards Phillip was exhausting to read. I mean my goddess, this man has shown you at every corner that he does not love you enough to marry you UNTIL something horrible happened to you that can take you away from him forever and you call that love? like girl, leave that man alone and find someone that actually loves you. ...more

This is the seventh Disgraced Lords novel and it is about Rose and Philip, a couple who has been part of the other books as secondary characters who now gets their own story told. Fans of the series know these two quite well, they have quite an unconventional relationship and readers get to find out why it is so. Oh, I loved this book. It’s full of passion, lust and of course two troubled leads. Both don’t want to get married – Rose doesn’t want to remarry and Philip doesn’t want to produce a heir. Both have a backpack from their past they carry around.

Rose was kind of sold to an elderly Duke (Roxborough) before she had a season. A passionless, loveless marriage – thankfully she gave birth to a son within a short period. Plus, thankfully the Duke died quickly after it, so she was an independent widow.

Ph Oh, I loved this book. It’s full of passion, lust and of course two troubled leads. Both don’t want to get married – Rose doesn’t want to remarry and Philip doesn’t want to produce a heir. Both have a backpack from their past they carry around.

Rose was kind of sold to an elderly Duke (Roxborough) before she had a season. A passionless, loveless marriage – thankfully she gave birth to a son within a short period. Plus, thankfully the Duke died quickly after it, so she was an independent widow.

Philip on the other hand was the second son of the Earl of Cumberland, who gambled a lot and lost a lot to risky investments. So one day he decided to join the army against Napoleon but he didn’t buy a commission. His older brother, Robert, followed him and when the enemy was about to kill Philip he went in between them and died – of course Philip blames him for Roberts death, even 6 years later.

Because Rose is Philip’s sister’s best friend they always spent a lot of time together. One day they start an affair. Both know that they don’t want to marry. Two years later they still have an affair and Rose knows that she loves him. The ton knows of their affair, everybody knows of it and each and everybody is waiting for him to offer for her.

Rose knows that her son’s guardian wants to her marry again. And she’d marry Philip if he’d ask her but he never overcame Robert’s death. He tells Rose that he doesn’t need an heir because he has three younger brothers who would inherit the title.

If course there is much more to the storyline. There is a lot of sex, lots of passion and lots of angst – especially in the last third of the book. There is a small “thing” in the end which was kind of predictable for me (and I loved it).

Bronwen Evans again created the perfect little escape for me – I read the book within a day, loved both leads and already knew the background story of some of the other characters because I read several other books of this series (not all so far though).

She has this kind of style that you cannot put the book away and I like it. It’s intriguing. Reading this book is like watching a movie, you can “see” it scene by scene.

I think it’s my 2nd favorite book this year so far!

Rose had been wed to an old Duke and is now the Duchess, free of the Duke, content with her life she is doing what pleases her. She is set on never marrying again, there is no need for her. Her late husband left her enough money and she is taking some lovers, keeping those intent on marrying her at bay. Her anchor is her little son. But one day she is reunited with the man she used to love as a teen, Philip, and that is the beginning of an affair for both of them. Rose considers for the first time her feelings for him, but is her reputation her ruin for a future with him? Philip on the other hand promised his dead brother to be level-headed and responsible as the earl, fulfilling his duty to his family and his dead brother. He did not share the secret promise with anyone. Rose gives him a purpose and joy which leads to more guilt. She is soothing his deepest wounds.

They settle in a convenient arrangement, but all things come to an end and soon they are pulled into a game far bigger than what you might think.

What I really liked are the characters, they are strong, independent, with flaws, but very loveable. Bronwen draws a picture of a woman who is at peace with herself, finally free of the shackles of an arranged marriage, but not broken. Enjoying her life as much as possible without completely disregarding the tons rules. She is smart enough to know exactly what her actions mean, taking what she craves and valuing what came out of her marriage. As you can already se, I am not into the spiritless virgins that drop at the heroes feet after first seeing him. Rose is a grownup who can analyze a situation and emotions. And the hero has a troubled past, avoiding one of the tons most important rules, but fully aware of his duty for his family. He changes from his young self to also a grownup.

And finally we have a great story. It starts off with a love affair and soon becomes a portrait of emotions. And then there comes something entirely else (I can’t say more or I would spoil the read). But the story got me by surprise and I truly enjoyed where the author took us. Read the book in one go and it won’t be my last book from this author.

She is satisfied with her lovers and raising her young son, but her relationship with Philip Flagstaff, Earl of Cumberland, is challenging her intentions. The two have been lovers for several years and recently, Rose's thoughts have turned toward the possibility of a future with Philip -- perhaps even marriage. But Philip is also against the idea of marriage. Having gained the title after his older brother sacrificed his own life for Philip's, Philip is wracked with guilt and intends on making sure the title eventually goes to someone more worthy than he. So he intends never to marry or have children. When threats arise toward Rose and her son, Philip has to decide what Rose means to him.

OPINION: For me, one of the highlights of this book is how Rose accepts and relishes her own sexual nature. She regrets her past only because she fears that Philips doesn't want to marry her because of it. But she truly doesn't regret her lovers or her past. She enjoys sex and recognizes that she is not willing to live a celibate life even if Philip cannot be part of her future. In a genre filled with wide-eyed virgins, this fully realized woman was a definite positive.

Indeed, Philip's own response to Rose's past was also welcome. He has some jealous moments, but doesn't judge Rose for her past lovers. His acceptance of her on all levels is one thing that makes him special. Even if he is annoyingly guilt ridden and thus making stupid irrational decisions.

I liked that Rose and Philip are longtime lovers by the time this book really starts. This isn't a relationship often depicted in historical romances. What the story shows is that a story can start mid-relationship and still have something to show about how their relationship progresses and changes.

I enjoyed this book even though Philip's determination to reject happiness annoyed me for quite a while in this book.

WORTH MENTIONING: Which looked to be an ending to the series is not. There are more Disgraced Lords books coming.

CONNECTED BOOKS: A LOVE TO REMEMBER is the seventh book in the Disgraced Lords series. This novella can be read on its own. I have read some, but not all of the previous books in the series, and while this book does have references to other characters, the romance is self-contained (but fans of the series will get some treats).

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

Every once in a while you come across a book that compels you to read it beginning to end- you connect and you cannot stop reading. This book was one of those for me. I started reading it at 11:00 pm - to just start it- but finally finished it at 3:20 am. Whew! Rose and Philip's story is wonderful.

Rose is a woman who has been used and is now wanting to be in control of her life. She was forced by her father to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather - at 18 years of age! Rose is a woman who has been used and is now wanting to be in control of her life. She was forced by her father to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather - at 18 years of age! He did it to raise his influence or status in the ton- with no real care for his daughter's feelings. Her father did her one kindness when he financially secured her future in the marriage contract. So she begins the story as a wicked (she has had a string of steamy affairs since the death of her husband, who left her a rich) widow- who has just discovered her own sensuality and the joy of sex.

When her husband dies -Rose swears she will never marry again. She has a son and money - so, what more could she want?

Philip was the second son and finds himself inheriting an earldom bc his older brother loses his life at Waterloo, trying to save Philip.

Philip had joined the military as a means to run away from his problems and mistakes. His older brother, Robert, thinking to protect Philip, joins the military and follows Philip believing he can save his brother from another one of his (Phillip's) many bungles. And Robert does save Philip - quite literally- when he takes a bayonet intended for his brother and dies on the battlefield in Philip's arms.

Robert's funeral was deafening in its pain. Rose, a woman who at fifteen already believed herself in love with Philip, takes his hand and encourages him to leave Robert's gravesite. Rose's simple kindness and touch brings Philip back to awareness. He remembers her as a young beauty and seeing her again spurs feelings pushing the two to become a couple- one that vows to others that they will never marry. But hearts don't always follow a script. Their love grows and they find companionship and a deep friendship that they begin to count in with each other. Neither tires of the other, always showering expressions of love and respect to each other- while never uttering the word, love.

Their affair ignites, and despite each thinking that they should end it, they cannot. They find themselves wrestling with what is actually in their hearts and what theiy have pledged to never do--fall in love and marry or remain alone.

But the heart wants what it wants- unless it can't have it...

Both Rose and Philip have sworn off marriage, but they ache for each other, having found the other part of themselves in the other person. Ghosts and fears battle it out with their deepest emotions. Love peeks through, but will love gets a chance?

An excellent book! Great characters, riveting story. Read it. Five stars. ...more
