Jeana, Wade and Billy Joe are now sophomores in high school. Although Billy Joe and Jeana remained best friends, Wade is no longer in their group. When Mickey Royal moves back to Chickasaw after a tragic event in his family, Jeana falls instantly in love. Wade is no longer the sweet boy Jeana grew up with and when a feud begins between Mickey and Wade, Jeana needs to stay true to herself and what she believes in.
I enjoyed this A LOT more than the first book in the trilogy, although I still had my problems with it. I think that the characters are more developed in this book and I really enjoyed Billy Joe this time around. I did not like Mickey and Jeana's relationship at all. Honestly, I find it a little bit controlling and abusive in my opinion. I didn't like how he was constantly getting aggressive with her over Wade. I also really did not like Wade in this book...
The writing style DEFINITELY improved a lot in this book compared to the first one and I didn't find myself rolling my eyes as much at it. There was also a bit more action in this book which I appreciated!

Great characters and voice, like all Joyce Scarbrough's books. Humor and Southern flare abound.

Royal Blue is a wonderful sequel to True Blue. Jeana Russell, Mickey Royal, Wade Strickland, and Billy Jo DuBose are back and are at Vigor High School. Mickey moved back to Alabama in March after his dad died of cancer. On his first day of school, he talks to Jeana for the first time and is still totally entranced by her looks and personality. After school, they fall right off the deep end and are totally in love. Wade has gone from a sweet sixth grader to a high school football phenom, which sets him on track for violence with Mickey, a three-sport jock.
After getting caught "having dessert," Mickey and Jeana end up tutoring other students. Then the nightmare begins. Mickey is set to tutor a German shotputter who doesn't understand a word he says and vice versa. Jeana, on the other hand, is required to tutor her worst enemy in English. Wade Strickland. Will she run away with Mickey, or will she find something she didn't even know existed anymore?
Opinion:
Royal Blue is another beautifully written book by Joyce Scarbrough. Her books are definitely worth rereading over and over again. Her characters are very relatable and have very real personalities. I'm so excited to finish reading her books. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family. Scarbrough's writing is touching and gives a realistic perspective of high school students.
Although this book is written well, I would caution readers under 10 years of age to think before they read this book. Royal Blue contains very mature content that may not be appropriate for younger readers. Many of the words characters use to express themselves do not honor God and can be offensive to many readers. Though cautions should be taken, this is an amazing story to read and contemplate.

Just finished reading the True Blue Trilogy and all three books are amazing!! I was drawn in and hooked by the first book, True Blue. Let’s just say I missed a lot of sleep because I didn’t want to put the next two books, Royal Blue (book 2) and True Blue Forever (book three), down. These are all great reads!! The author makes you feel like you are there with the characters, supporting, rooting for, and believing in them. They are so realistic and definitely bring you back to your childhood.

Great character development. I enjoyed following the next stage of their lives. Very moving story of the joys and the struggles of growing up.

Okay so I don't know if I like this book more or less than the first. This book definitely was fast paced and more interesting than the first and the writing style definitely improved. However, I am not a fan of the characters in this book.
Jeana, Wade and Billie Joe are now all sophomores in high school. While Jeana and Billie Joe continue to be great friends, their friendship with Wade no longer exists. Wade is now a big hot shot jock on the football team and treats Jeana and Billie Joe like trash. And while Mickey wasn't a huge character in the first book, he had a much bigger role in this second book.
One thing that just made this book for me not that great was Jeana and Mickey's relationship. While the author probably intended it for their relationship to be very devoted and serious, the relationship came out almost abusive and controlling to me. Mickey had to constantly have Jeana tell him that she was his and no one else's. He would get so jealous and possessive that I was almost afraid that he was gonna start telling her who she was allowed to hang out with or who she can talk to. And the insta love between them was a bit ridiculous.
Billie Joe is pretty much the only character in this book that I liked but what's sad is that he has been shoved in the back to make way for Mickey. Billie Joe had such a big part in the first book and was so important to the plot of the first book but in this book, we mainly only got to see him when Jeana and Mickey gave him a ride to school in the morning.
Overall this book was definitely more interesting than the first but I do think that I actually like this book less than the first. I am not a fan of Mickey at all and I wish I could've seen more of Billie Joe.
