Spanish American War: A History From Beginning to End

Rate this book
Spanish-American War "A splendid little war "- that's how one contemporary observer described the Spanish-American War, a war that is arguably one of the most important wars ever fought. The duration was short and the victory decisive, thus little and splendid, the latter, at least, from the victor's point of view. The impacts of the war, however, were anything but little. In fact, the aftermath of the Spanish-American War is still affecting global affairs today. The dominant superpowers of 1898 watched as a new player on the international scene, the United States, shifted its ideology from isolationism to expansionism, and emerged as a force to reckoned with, a true superpower. Inside you will read about... - Prelude to War - First Blood - The Pacific Theatre - The Caribbean Theatre - War's End And much more! The result was a series of bloody battles fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific over Spanish territorial holdings. This eBook takes the reader on a journey from what set the stage for war to the aftermaths that continue to impact each of the players in the present day. From the explosion that sank the USS Maine to the recent detente in Cuban-American relations, this eBook describes the events and their consequences in a thorough yet concise manner that is enjoyable to read and packed with historical information."

Full of Errors

I am not sure why this anti-American propaganda is included in a so-called history series. America was blamed for everything but at the end is given a little credit for improving the possessions.
Big error. The author refers to the Bay of Pigs (April 1961) and the Cuban Missile Crises (October 1962) as one and the same event. That is a major error and if these books have an editor should have been noted and corrected.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!

An interesting aspect of the Spanish-American War was the fact that after the Spaniards left the colonies (they no longer owned) and spent their money at home; it caused a revitalizing effect on Spanish culture and increased technological modernization in the Mother country.

This book makes a point of highlighting the fact that 'this splendid little war' united the North and South against a common enemy -- Spain.  The author even mentioned that (former Confederate) soldiers were active in the war.

I liked the fact that this book spent at least half of the booklet explaining the results and repercussions of the 10-week war.  It explained the consequences for the US, Spain, Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam in 5 chapters.  I now understand why we still have Guantanamo Bay.

I'm sorry, but this lecture completely overstates the importance of this "hickup" in Global powers.

The U.S. did not gain "superpower-status" after this war and ever worse, the isolationism in the interbellum almost destroyed freedom in the whole World.

This depiction of the Spanish-American War is a blatant lie and a distortion of the real facts.

As advertised this is a very concise history of the Spanish American War. The impact of that ten week war lasted much longer. I like the way that the consequences of that war on each of the belligerents and former Spanish colonies are covered. I learned something of value from this Hourly History.

The BEST of the series so far. I knew this was a 'small' war but had no idea that it reached to include such places as The Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico and of course Cuba. The best part was the last several chapters where the author did conclusions of the war to each of the participants and brought you up to almost current day. Well done.

Great little ebook on Spanish American war.

Though the war only lasted ten weeks. It had everlasting effect on the expansionist policies of the US. They had control over Philippines and Cuba. It also manifested greater control in international affairs and gave the status of super power to the US. Always good research done by hourly history.

An enlightening book

Being born and raised in the depression, i did not know much about the Spanish American war. I have since traveled to each of the related possessions as well as Spain, this has provided greater knowledge.

Spanish-American War

Although I learned more than I previously knew about this war through reading this short history, I felt it had a strong politically liberal leaning from the author that I found distasteful.

Very interesting part of history !

Schools don't cover much about the French and Indian war . These hourly books are quite informing but they could have a little more depth . Maybe they should be two hours ?

Interesting

I recommend this book to those that want to know about this war in general - not in depth. I learned it was little but important. Wording was clear and easy to understand. I would recommend it to those interested in history.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading about a war/conflict that I'd never gave more than a glance at in the past. Very informative, without feeling I was reading a textbook.

Short enough to keep you interested and teach you the important things. Not too long to bore you with mundane details that you don't care for and would have forgotten by the next day anyway.

As a child, I think I was introduced to the Spanish-American War in all of two sentences during one year of school. With that said, it has never seemed to come up in my life until now when I became curious about it and picked up this book. I needed a book that could quickly and efficiently summarize the causes, events, main people, and effects of the war. With nothing to compare it to, I feel this was a great resource for just that. I have my notes and can answer all these questions to at-least a basic level and could relay what I’ve learned. By far, it was a better education on this subject than what I received in my younger years. The reading was enjoyable and the prose completely understandable. This would be a good resource for a curious adult like myself or a parent looking to use it for homeschooling (which is where my curiosity as an adult began since I am a homeschooling parent). This was a short book that I was able to read in one sitting with kids playing in the background.

I think this is a series that would be for the older kids who enjoy The Who was series, or at least a good counterpart. I think older only because this book didn’t have any pictures like The Who Was series. If the rest of the series is as good as this one, I do plan to utilize a few more in this series to brush up on some history facts.

"A Splendid Little War"

I cannot imagine that any war could be declared splendid and in reality, this war was neither, unless you were a politician or a businessman. However, this book gives a good overview and basic understanding of the war's effect on the countries involved.

Little war big finish!!!

The book on Spanish American was historically accurate with details that United States experience for first time a world powerhouse and Phillipine,Cuban,Puerto Rico and Guam became part USA dynasty!!! The book demonstrates that USA needed this time of recognition to the world that after civil war that USA was a nation united not divided. The author has put together quick facts of the foundation of knowledge that brought out the sadness of war and the lost of life, but it opened the door the United States will not mind their domestic business only but will start buzzing around other nations and it begun with a “unique little war “.

Enlightening Short History Lesson

Well written and educational as Americans have been taught very little about this war and how it impacted the parties involved.

I liked it. Concise and easy to read. A good, if short, explanation of the war and its consequences and aftermath.

Men bargaining, fighting and arguing over a country when it wasn't even theirs to sell or buy. Not recognizing the country as a home to millions of people but only seeing it as an asset. Ugh past Spain and America. Shame on you.

Not enough on Mexico and Spain's influence

Spanish American war covered Cuba, Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico, etc not enough on Mexico and Texas territory. Why was Mexico not included??

Not as good as some other hourly history books. This one was rather repetitive -- it seemed like a high school history paper padded with repetition to meet the required length.
