About the author

Erich Maria Remarque was a German novelist best known for All Quiet on the Western Front (1929), a landmark anti-war novel based on his experiences in World War I. The book became an international bestseller, defining a new genre of veterans’ literature and inspiring multiple film adaptations. Its strong anti-war themes led to condemnation by the Nazi regime, which banned and burned his works.
Born Erich Paul Remark in 1898, he adopted the surname Remarque to honor his French ancestry. He served on the Western Front during World War I, where he was wounded, and later pursued various jobs, including teaching, editing, and technical writing. After the massive success of All Quiet on the Western Front, he wrote several other novels addressing war and exile, such as The Road Back, Three Comrades, and Arch of Triumph. His outspoken opposition to the Nazi regime forced him into exile in Switzerland and later the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1947.
Remarque’s personal life included high-profile relationships with actresses Marlene Dietrich and Paulette Goddard, the latter of whom he married in 1958. In 1943, his youngest sister, Elfriede, was executed by the Nazis for anti-regime remarks, an event that deeply affected him. He spent his later years in Switzerland, where he continued writing. His final completed novel, The Night in Lisbon (1962), was another bestseller.
He died in 1970 at the age of 72, leaving behind a literary legacy that continues to shape discussions on war and its consequences.

Aš pažvelgiau pro langą, už kurio lėkė pro šalį toji svetima tamsa, o paskui įsispoksojau į blausiai apšviestą vagoną, kuriame kaip kokie vaiduokliški šikšnosparniai plazdėjo kelios sąvokos, svetimos jau: siluetas, palinkusi galva,šiluma, petys ir tas truputėlis sutelktos ugnies iš bevardžio laiko, lyg koks Voltos lankas, lyg tiltas per prarają, bet tai buvo tik iliuzija, niekas negalėjo išvesti iš tos begalinio svetimumo beviltiškos vienatvės — ne nekaltos sentimentalios vienatvės, o tos paskutinės nežmoniškos vienatvės, kurioje esi paskutinė ir pirma, ir likimo valiai palikta gyvenimo kibirkštis.

This is a book for everyone who forgot what truly matters in our lives, who do not cherish what they have and waste their time on different unnecessary things.
This is what I also should learn from it.
Lilian was thirsty of life that she was isolated from, she decides to live today and to not think about future as she knew she will not have one. This is what Clerfayt loved about her, her free spirit and taste, but at the end she gives up on him because she thought he has enough time to live, which turned to be totally reverse. It’s amazing how people can be wrong and confused.
As almost all of Remarque books, this one has a tragical ending too, but even so, Lilian died happy and she deserved it.

We think too much about ourselves, about our feelings, our place in this world, while the life is happening to those around us, slowly (or quickly) taking them away. I'm the person suffering from being too self-absorbed, putting my worries and thoughts at the center of the universe. Life is temporary, I get that, but so is the life of the ones we love.

Так получилось,что я забросила это дело на два месяца из- за дел,но давайте снова начнём отзывы о книгах, которые я прочитала, потому что многие мне уже написали ,что им это нравится и помогает в выборе книг. А это для меня уже многое значит. ☺️

Итак ,следующая книга, о которой я хочу оставить отзыв, это ,,Жизнь взаймы ,,одного из моих самых любимых писателей ,Ремарка.Столько мудрых мыслей в одной книге ,которая заставляет задуматься не только о жизни, но и о дружбе, любви и смерти, я наверное нигде ,или во всяком случае, мало где встречала.Как всегда Ремарк чрезмерно настоящий ,сквозь строки ты чувствуешь ,что у него настоящие чувства и настоящие мысли ,эта книга берет за душу и складывается такое впечатление ,что ты сам в центре действий.Именно после таких книг начинаешь больше ценить свою жизнь ,жизнь своих родных и близких и понимаешь ,что здоровье - это самое главное, о чем надо заботиться и что надо беречь.Понимаешь всю мелочность окружающих нас проблем.Понимаешь ,как уходишь в суматоху дней, переставая ценить самое прекрасное вокруг, переставая быть благодарным за то все ,что у тебя уже есть ,переставая жить сегодняшним днём.
Советую всем прочитать и надеюсь что эта книга займёт свое достойное место в вашей библиотеке!

Dear all, I am ready to start again the reviews of the books that I’ve read, as many people have already written to me how they liked it and how it helped them in choosing books. And that already means a lot to me. ☺️

So, the next book that I want to talk about , is ,, Heaven has no favorites,, by anothe r favorite author of mine,Remarque. There are so many wise thoughts in one little book, that makes you think not only about life, but also about friendship, love and death. As always, Remarque is overly real, through the lines you feel that he has real feelings and real thoughts, this book touches your soul and gives the impression that you yourself are in the center of actions. You begin to appreciate more the life you live, the life of your dear ones and understand ,that health is the most important thing to take care and to protect of
. You understand the pettiness of the problems surrounding us. You understand how you go into the bustle of days, ceasing to appreciate the most beautiful things around, ceasing to be grateful for everything that you already have, ceasing to live NOW and here.
I advise everyone to read this and I hope that this book will take its worthy place in your library!

Прочёл после Триумфальной Арки в надеждах узнать будущее главного героя (Равика), который так же встречается в книге. Тени в раю оставили больше грустных впечатлений чем Триумфальная Арка. В очередной раз убедился как всё плохо (хотя надеялся на хеппи энд). Как романтика - слабо, как биография героя - не интересно, как описание жизни беженцев - сильно. Но после Триумфальной Арки (где все показатели были куда выше) остался не совсем доволен.
Удачное чтиво если ничего больше нету под рукой.
