Mona McKee is an ambitious but frustrated bit-player in 1950s Hollywood. A former child actress struggling to find success as an adult, she has a sickly mother, a jealous sister and a minimally employed brother-in-law to support. All of that would be pressure enough but now it seems that Mona has fallen pregnant—despite being a virgin.
Bryce K. Polk is the leading expert in a subject no one cares about--third string actresses of Hollywood's golden era. His favorite is Mona McKee and it doesn't even matter (much) that no one in his PhD program seems to agree. When a strange woman comes to him with a trove of old films believed lost, however, Bryce may had stumbled upon a career-making break--and the solution to a 70 year old mystery.
Nicole M. Taylor was an only child, born deep in the corn-ears of rural Michigan where she honed her talents for being supercilious, eating pop-tarts and making up strange fictional situations.
Today, she lives in San Jose with her husband and a small fetal alien named Magoo. She writes speculative fiction about witches, ghosts, robots, reptoid aliens and pianists. She also works occasionally as a ghostwriter, collaborating on everything from historical memoirs to medical thrillers.
Her first YA book series, Bots, is available from Epic Press in August, 2015.
This story is loosely based on a true-crime I had never heard of that is tangentially related to the case of the Black Dahlia. Dual perspectives make the unraveling of the mystery interesting and twisty.
Spoiler alert****** For my second quarter book I read "Killers, The Extra Girl". This book is suspenseful, full of crime and has a lot of drama. This book is a a fictional book for people who love to read suspenseful books. In my book it was about a girl named Mona Mckee. Mona was a 1920's actress who lived with her twin sister Rita, sick mother and abusive brother in law Clark. Mona was the person who took care of the family worked two jobs to support all of her family. Mona did not have big roles in her career. She was a small actress. Mona was a virgin and a very innocent petite woman. Mona woke up one day feeling very weird. She found out she was pregnant. She is so confused on why because she has never been with a man in her life. All throughout the time this pregnancy was happening she also made a friend named Tiny. Tiny is trying to help Mona with this pregnancy and ends up disappearing. Mona is trying to figure out what happened to her and how she got pregnant. Later in the book Mona ended up missing. Rita her twin sister is trying to figure out why and how her sister went missing. Rita fits the missing pieces together and realizes her husband Clark raped Mona and killed her. Rita is waiting for her husband to get home with a gun in her hand. This book is slow at first but once you get a couple chapters into the book it starts to get interesting. This is the first book in the series and I will not be reading the rest of them.
