Using photographs and text, this informational children’s book introduces readers to the parts of airplanes, types of airplanes, job of the pilots, and history of airplanes.
As in many informational children’s books, a list of resources where readers can find additional information about the book’s topic is included at the end of this book. This book could be used in the classroom to assist students in writing a research paper, preparing for a presentation, or completing a project. In an activity to help students develop good research skills, a teacher could direct the student who is doing a project on airplanes to the list of resources at the end of the book. This would allow the student the opportunity to practice finding different resources in the library or online. This also encourages the student to seek further information from a variety of resources. By discussing this resource page at the end of many informational books like this one, the teacher could help students to understand where they can go to learn more about a topic which they are interested in.
This is a great book for kids who already love airplanes and want to know a little more detail. Nearly 50 pages, topics include types of airplanes, a basic discussion of how they fly, taking off and landing, history of airplanes, etc. Each section is brief, but interesting. I only wish the cross-section of the jet was larger, because I love cross-sections and in this one, everything is so small, you don't get a sense of all the different areas of the plane.
"Airplanes" is part of the "True Book" series which I like and the reason I rated this one higher than I rated the Mars book was because this version is from 1997 and the graphics are much cleaner and less gratuitous and busy than the 2007 version of the Mars book that I had. I am not a fan of the new graphics.
This book gives a lot of information about the techniques and abilities for planes to fly. The first fiction book I thought to compare it with is Harry Potter. Although the books are very different Harry Potter and his friends are able to fly on their brooms in the books. The book airplanes tells us what it takes to really fly in the air.
