Any walk outdoors can be a treasure hunt, and with Linda J. Spielman's new book, you have a treasure map. This book will help you identify the tracks of common mammals in the Northeast -- and unlock some of their secrets. A strong point of this book is that is shows more than one version of an animal's tracks. Tracks can appear different based on the ground, weather conditions, and age, and by offering sketches of the same track in a variety of different conditions, this books increases the read ...more

What makes this guide so useful is the incredible illustrations of animal track variations made under all kinds of conditions found in the field. With other guides I have often given up because the print I see in situ looks nothing like the cartoonish icons in a some books or apps. This book offers an introductory chapter which explains the morphology of a print and how to measure the track and gait. The explanations and descriptions are easy to follow and includes helpful diagrams. Tracks are l ...more

This book is a pleasant, well-organized, thoroughly scientific, and easy to understand guide to tracking mammals in the northeast portion of the United States. With drawings and photos of tracks taken by the author and diagrams for different mammal gaits, this is a very useful field guide for a practice that has always been and will continue to be incredibly useful as long as there are living creatures on this Earth. This guide is useable regardless of one's personal tracking experience level, a ...more

Whether you've just started getting into tracking or have been at it for years, this field guide is a great tool for anyone interested in wildlife. It is thorough, easy to understand, and organized logically. I learned quite a bit about animal tracking while reading it. As others have mentioned, one of the best selling points of this book is the fact that it illustrates how tracks will look under different circumstances. Furthermore, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the illustrations are q ...more

I enjoyed this book and it's serving me well as identify the tracks leading to our chicken coop. I think I even identified a red fox based on the scat information. The information is clear, easy to follow and the pictures are great! I like that it's targeted for the northeast and I don't have to skim through information that may not pertain to me. I will be sure to grab this book and take it with me on my next hike.
