This is a very interesting free short novel that takes place in the "Beautiful Monsters" universe. In this world vampires and incubus demons are in a constant war, while the humans are totally ignorant of what is going on in the dark. A really old dangerous but tired vampire will be ecstatic when he meets a young incubus. Titus has been stalking Pryne for a year, before he saves her and takes back to his lair. The problem is that Titus represents all the scary monsters little incubus' parents has told her to avoid. I am planning to start the main series as soon as possible which as I understood it is mainly MM with some MF parts as well.
I didn't realise that this was a short story in the author's Beautiful Monsters universe (a book series) so when I picked up this quick read, I wasn't sure what to expect but in a short amount of time, I discovered what Jex's writing style is like. The short story follows a vampire lord Titus who abducts a succubus called Prynne and hides her away in his lair. But as a romance starts to brew, it is forbidden for two species to be together.
Although I'm not the biggest fan of reading Vampire books, I will be stopping to read more stories from this universe as I was left interested in all of the characters included and the surroundings. Pearl and the Dread King is easily a 10-15 minute read.
This was just okay for me, so far it’s my least favorite work from Jex Lane. I definitely would’ve been more inclined to enjoy a full length novel staring Titus and Pearl, but hopefully we’ll see a lot more of them in the future Beautiful Monsters books! (Also I absolutely hate this cover- such a tragedy compared to her other stories).
Curious about this series I decided to start with this short story. Boy, am I ever glad that I did! In so few pages Lane wrote a story that was sensual, sexy, and captivating. The characters flourish in their roles and the world that is teased seems amazing. The relationship is so intriguing as it is always difficult to build something in the captive/captor circumstances and Lane does an amazing job of making it more than that. Great short, great couple, and I am definitely going to be reading this series!
This is a very short story set in the Beautiful Monsters universe. Titus and Pearl are new characters that will suppose to appear in the next books of the series. The story was too short to actually make up my mind about them but they seem interesting. I think they will be a great addition to this already strange cast of characters - vampire lord from Roman times and delicate, young social succubus. Yeah, with their forbidden relationship, they will blend in just fine.
Sweet (-bitter?), short freebie, M/F romance, set in the world of Jex Lane's Beautiful Monsters series (Captive, book 1, Sire, book 2--the series has M/M, also some M/F).
A powerful vampire falls for a succubus, even though vampires and incubi/succubi have been at war for centuries. Enemies/lovers.
Basically for fans of the series/world. Or for anyone wanting to try a sample.
I just love it when authors give their readers freebies, or extras like this. I delighted in seeing more about the vampires, since Captive dealt mostly with the incubi (who hate vampires). Also interesting to have the romance amidst the hatred and distrust of the vampire-incubus war. But, of course, I was left wanting more!
I got this as a freebie for signing up for the authors newsletter, cause why not. It isn't like I don't get a ton of book related emails anyway. This is a short story set in the world of beautiful monsters. For a 40 page short story it wasn't bad. I'd recommend reading the beautiful mosters series though, which I was skeptical of at first, but then it ended up tearing my heart out, and I feel in love with it.
Jex Lane does it again! I don't know what is about Jex's writing style, but it pulls you in from page one leaving you satisfied, but also wanting so much more by the end. Another fabulous story with well-developed characters. Giving us a peek into Pearl's world, revealing how she met and started dating Titus was simply brilliant. Now I want a novel completely dedicated to their relationship and how it works while living in two different worlds. I hope Ms. Lane that there are more to come from these two, I anxiously await more novels. I give this book 5 of 5 stars and would recommend this novel. Well done, Jex Lane. You've done it again!
This was ok. Not sure wha else to say since it was really short, but is supposed to be in this world. I'm guessing we will see these two more in the future.

Pearl and the Dread King is the first story I've read by this author and to be honest it didn't wow me enough to make me excited about diving into the rest of the series. Perhaps I'd have enjoyed it more if I was already familiar with the world but the romance was very rushed and because it's so short there isn't much time to introduce readers to the world she has created. All I really know is that vampires are at war with the incubi but I don't know why the war started or how long it's been going on for.
There wasn't enough time for me to form any kind of connection with the characters. All I know is that the Dead King (vampire) kidnapped succubus Pearl (that's not her real name BTW but it's the one he decided to give her and he refuses to use her real name) and within 24 hours she decides she'd rather stay with him than go home.
This did not seem like this was Jex’s writing, tbh. If she chose to lengthen the story of Titus and Pearl, this would have been better. Everything was too rushed. Titus was way more fickle than an old vampire should be. At first we seem him collected and controlled and then out of nowhere he loses control wanting her blood when she said she wasn’t hungry. And her mood changes was odd. All this within 24hours.
Well... This book has 40 pages. 😂 It ended too soon. I hope her novellas will help me with my book hangover. yes it's that bad. 😂 I liked this story how their love is taboo but that didn't stop them. I wished the story was a little longer but still it was a fun and cute read.
Krótkie opowiadanie osadzone w universum sukubów i wampirów.
"Pearl and the Dread King" is a short story in the "Beautiful Monsters" universe. It features two characters who haven't shown up in the rest of the series so far, and it's presented as a stand-alone, although I can personally see this being the seed for a series all its own. Maybe if we're very good children, Jex Lane will reward us with something like that.
I enjoyed this capitally, and it's always nice to see pockets of a beloved universe removed from the story on the main stage. I can't help but think that the Dread King and his beloved Pearl will show up on the main stage sooner or later.
A fine little teaser. Reiterates the problems and prejudices between vampires and incubi, but lacking the substantial story-telling of captive and sire. I am intrigued by these characters' forbidden romance and how they figure into a future story with Matthew.
I’m not sure if my notes below are spoilery, but I decided to mark them as such just in case.
Who knew such a short little novel could pack such a strong emotional punch? And who knew vampires could be lonely and suicidal? When I first read that Titus wanted to go to sleep forever, never to wake up again, because if his Pearl was gone, he would have nothing else to keep living for, I started bawling my eyes out and didn’t stop till the very end of the story.
And when Titus explained why he called his beautiful succubus Pearl... Wow, just wow! I wanted to hug them both.

There's really not much to say about this one. This is a short about a vampire lord who hasn't been heard of in many, many years who has taken a liking to a young succubus. I do wonder if this vampire lord, Titus, will play a bigger role in the series. This starts off a little sketchy, but consent seems to be a thing here and Titus appears to respect that, for the most part. For creatures on two sides of the war, this was an interesting read and a good break from the intensity of the overall series.
It's nice that this was free but I was kinda disappointed in the book. It didn't offer much and the editing wasn't all that great as I was expecting. I Floved the reg BeMo series but this one took a notice and a half down at 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I love Jex. That being said, I'm very excited to see where things go with the Dread King. He sounds so mysterious and exciting!
3.8 stars. The Dread King secretly loved a succubus and finally dragged her home. Since the Dread King was obviously nothing to be afraid of but perfect in every way, the succubus gave in and they lived happy ever after.
