I had two choices in life—to be a breeder, or to be a soldier. To create life, or to destroy it.

I had chosen poorly.

The Earth’s thermostat is all but frozen, leaving two opposing factions, the Pennas and the Cyans, to spread throughout the forbidding tundra of a planet forever cast in a dark and deadly ice age, seeking only power and control now that the world has become

I'm giving this 2 stars simply for the editing. It was a well-written book, but in a word, it was boring. After reading the blurb, I thought it was an interesting premise. It was, at the very least, a unique concept and one I hadn't read before, but it wasn't particularly dark nor was it all that erotic.

The world is split into two factions--the Pennas and the Cyans. The Pennas believe in science and have genetically enhanced themselves to adapt to the frozen wasteland that is now earth. They als

I haven't read many sci-fi/paranormal romance books, so I'm no expert, but I rather enjoyed this read. To better understand the reasoning behind my rating, I thought I'd list everything I liked (or not) in point form.

Dislikes (let's get these out of the way first)
* the lack of Rigby's POV. Although I liked Tudor's character well enough, I felt that Rigby's perspective would further enlighten me on the dynamics of their relationship. As it stood, the story was too one-dimensional
* the lack of

I enjoyed this fascinating post-apocalyptic tale with two warring factions, the Penna and Cyan. The Penna take a more scientific approach, and have created medicines from the life-giving blue-green algae, and even inject it giving them feathers for warmth from the ice age that now encompasses the earth. The Cyan use the blue-green algae as a nutritional food. These two factions are at war, with bloody battles often being fought. Will there ever be peace on earth again or will life

I read this as part of a romance reading challenge, and it's been my favorite book so far. It's well-written, has a real plot in addition to the romance, and the story arc is well-plotted. I had a little trouble accepting the ice-world warring (Where are they getting their food and clothing? Gas for their war-snowmobiles?), but the focus of the story was the erotica, not the science fiction, so it was something to just set aside. Definitely delivered on the erotica. I will be looking for other t ...more

This book is set in a post-apocalyptic world, it's a new ice age and there are 2 factions living on planet earth both thinking they have the right ideas.

Tudor is from the feathers group, I'm calling them that as they have feathers, they get injected in childhood with an algae type serum and develop feathers and these protect them from the cold - they're not covered in feathers like a bird but in certain areas they have small feathers. Tudor is a warrior, she had a choice breeder or warrior and s

Breeder or soldier..... what would you choose? I'm not sure what I would chooses but from the start of the description I was in need of reading this book. Add in a hot commander and post apocalyptic storyline and I was excited!!!

The heroine was tough and I loved that she wasn't one to back down. She stood up to the men and even though it was hard on her, she truly proved her self.

The hero, of you can call him that was a jerk, but it was very understandable. He had an army to lead and I think he

Brrrrr! The landscape was so well discribed that I felt cold. The heroine was disillusioned by the unnecessary bloodshed and left the bloodthirsty group who loved to kill. She walked through the icy landscape to join a less bloodthirsty group and becomes the first woman warrior and has to prove herself to all the soldiers that a women was as good or better. It was obvious that much research was done by Alta Hensley as the storyline unfolded. Alta delved into the emotions of the characters with a ...more

I don't really know what to think of this book.

It had great potential. It had great bones. It really should have been "more" ....

but it wasn't.

It was disappointing to say the least. I don't even know how to rate it (which is why I haven't).

It had action - but was boring.

It had dialogue - but was boring.

It had a romance - but was twisted. Seriously? Rigby's idea of Tudor's "virtue" needs to reexamined. Every time her "virtue" was alluded to, I ROLLED MY EYES. TWICE.

I didn't hate this one b

A middle of the road story for me. Some reviews say this is unique but really it is just another story of a girl that doesn't fit in and a man that thinks spankings will tame her. All the usual struggle with surrender and submission for a first timer blah blah, same type of man giving "lessons", the alpha gone soft over a different type a girl, the odd pretty girl he must possess etc. The same thing is missing too, real connection. However, it was nice to see a story of this genre that didn't ju ...more

This is my first book by Alta Hensley. I thought it was very different from most books I've read so far. In a world of ice and snow, war is fought and love on opposing sides is found. Rigby and Tudor were lovely main characters. I loved her strength as a fighter. Yes in ways there could have been more something in the book. But overall it was well done. I'm interested in seeing how her other books in the different genres she writes play out. ...more

All of the world is ice/snow covered. The main characters are Tudor and Rigby. There are 2 sides the Penna and the Cyan and the battle is over

A post apocalyptic stunning romance

I adored this book! Rigby and Tudor were both equally strong characters, each in their own right, but together they were explosive. The author has created a harsh apocalyptic world that, due to detailed descriptions, I could easily imagine. This new world, in turn, is harsh, dangerous, unpredictable and makes survival a struggle so it is just that much sweeter when love is found. This is not a wine and roses romance, it's so much more! You can feel the depth of

A story of love amidst war, and freezing temperatures. A war for survival rages on between the Penna and the cyans. Those with feathers and those without. In this an archer leaves her side as she tires of killing only to be captured by the enemy and fall for the man in front of her.

Good story.

I loved the concept of this book. It was a bit strange but a nice take on the world beginning its end. We start our journey with Tudor a mercenary who has been growing tired of war and death and the killing.

Wandering away from war we soon find her faces against the opposing side of the war. But what you learn is she is a woman... something that seems is uncommon in the time. Not believing she has chosen to leave Penn's where she comes seems a bit fishy. I admit I wondered if she real

A sweet love story in the midst of war

This was a good book to read. It was set in a future Earth that has seen more war than ever and turned into an icy wasteland. It has action and adventure with a side of spanking punishment added into the mix. Very well written and a quick read for me once I had time to devote to it.

Odd, yet interesting.

Tudor Dane is a Penna. In an ice-covered dystopian world, humans are split into two factions: the Penna and the Cyan. The Penna believe the cure-all algae should be used for science, while the Cyan believe it is best used as a food source. War rages through the lands and pits both groups against each other in a seemingly endless battle. When Tudor decides she has had enough bloodshed, she walks away from her role at a Penna mercenary. Rigby Moss is a Commander in the Cyan ar

The world in this book is very different than the one we’re living in right now. The population has been split up in 2 populations, the Penna and the Cyan. They have other believes and fight against each other. Many people have been killed during the war.

Tudor was a warrior and a Penna, until one day she decides that it’s wrong and she just leaves. Penna is searching for her and they want her dead, because she’s considered as a traitor. Tudor meets a group of Cyan and their leader Rigby. Cyan no
This isn't the type of book I typically read, but I really enjoyed it! The earth has descended into a permanent ice age, and there are basically two groups who are at war to control the earth and the most precious resource, the blue green algae, the Penna and the Cyans.

Tudor is the main character, a female archer, a strong fighter, she chose to be a warrior rather than a breeder, and she's developed a reputation for being the best archer despite her sex. When she decides she's tired of fighting

I received an ARC for a free and honest review. Dark Feather is my first book by Ms Hensley. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The story takes place in a very different Earth than we are used to. The Earth is a frozen tundra where a blue green algae is the most important resource, whether for nutrition or science. The world is at war with two groups of humans fighting. The Penna, who believe science is everything, and the Cyan who are fighting for food and to keep their humanity. Tudor, a Penna wa ...more

This is not the type of book I usually like. Don't get me wrong I like all kinds of genre but dystopian fantasy is not something I really am into. That being said I really liked tyhis book. It was a perfect blend of Dom/sub erotic romance within a dystopian setting. It was well read and I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it for a change of pace if this isn't usually your thing. I'm not really sure what to make of this story. It is very different from my usual genre as I don't read a huge amount of sci-if/apocalyptic romance books. I can see that this story has great potential, but for me, I just didn't "get it"!

It is written really well and I quite liked Rigby's character. Although I felt I'd have liked some of his POV. This is written entirely from Tudors POV, but I feel, as two opposing sides in the war they were fighting (to an extent), Ribgy's POV would have added

Very intense story that features a very strong warrior female, Tudor, that is challenged to set aside her entire life’s belief system that to show any emotion or submission means that she is weak. This is her journey through learning that emotions, love and submission is not weaknesses at all, in fact, she’s finds herself a stronger person once she embraces those aspects of her personality. I love that Rigby, the main male character, is a strong warrior that is not shy in expressing his feelings ...more

The descriptive prose created vivid imagery and I was immersed in the frozen post apocalyptic setting among the Cyan and Penna people. Tudor is an amazing character with remarkable depth.
