Powerful Teacher Education describes the strategies, goals, content, and processes of seven highly successful and long-standing teacher education programs - Alverno College, Bank Street College, Trinity University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Southern Maine, University of Virginia, and Wheelock College. All these colleges and universities have succeeded in preparing teachers to teach diverse learners to achieve high levels of performance and understanding. In discussing the common features of these programs, Linda Darling-Hammond shows what outstanding teacher education models do and how they do it, and what their graduates accomplish as a result. Powerful Teacher Education also examines the policies, organizational features, resources, and relationships that have enabled these programs to succeed.
Linda Darling-Hammond, president of the Learning Policy Institute, is the Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus at Stanford University. She is the award-winning author of numerous books including Beyond the Bubble Test: How Performance Assessments Support 21st Century Learning, and Powerful Teacher Education: Lessons from Exemplary Programs (Jossey-Bass).
I enjoyed this much more than license to teach This is another collection of written work trying to raise standards or quality so we can learn to teach so that all children can learn. This book addresses the need to share evidence of success, focus on learner-centered curriculum and commitment to understanding
I especially enjoyed the Bank street section and plan to become familiar with the work of Dorothy Cohen because of this book
This is a research-based book that shares information on what is required to create and maintain successful teachers within the classroom. I am SACS accredited to teach college level, but am pursuing my alternative resident license to teach k-12, and found the information most useful. Darling-Hammond provides real life examples of what is required in the classroom, and provides a heavy emphasis on cultural diversity and creating a caring environment. This is a great read for anyone who works in the education field.
