The short version: If you only read one book of poetry this year, let it be this one. As someone who loves poetry, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was beautifully written, and provides incredible insight to those who feel most forgotten in the course of humanity.

The long version: Let me first say, I am in awe of this book. The last poetry book that I

Filthy labors, lavori sporchi, come sono quelli che di sicuro hanno fatto, e faranno le donne ospiti di un ricovero per donne e bambini soli nel quale l'autrice ha lavorato come insegnante di scrittura creativa. A solid book of poetry. My favourite poems were about the women in the homeless shelter, you got a real sense of them as people. It shines through along with the sadness. Other poems were about family and ageing and hit home aswell, covering things like dementia. It's a touching book overall.

I love the title, and I was excited to get the book in the mail, but Filthy Labors is a fairly generic book for contemporary American poetry. offering few surprises in language or imagery. Schmidt is a fine craftsperson, and the book is good at what it does. I just wanted more..more surprise, more resonance, more challenge.
