Very moving story by my friend Minter who spent an incredible amount of energy researching information about his grandfather. Apart from Minter's personal story, the book is packed with great insights about WWII and what happened in the Pacific. A story not as known this side of the World despite all the significant battles which took place there, not to mention ill treatments of Western prisoners by Japan.

Having seen the documentary inspired by this book, I knew I must read it to understand more about the remarkable story of Lt. Nathaniel Minter Dial. It is both uplifting and heartbreaking, but overall it is a story of love spanning several generations. I hope the ring will find its way home - how can it not? I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are interested in the military history or simply in the very human story of a family affected for decades by the War.

Absorbing and painful at the same time. War creates bravery. War creates heroes. War creates monsters. War is hell. And war creates thousands of stories about the soldiers who fought in them, the family members who waited in agony for soldiers to return (or not), and the descendants who may have or may not have met their ancestral soldiers.

The Last Ring Home is a wonderful book. There's the discovery of the author's grandparents, but there is also the discovery of the father-son relationship intertwined. The ups and downs of the incredible journey of the ring is unique and powerful. The extraordinary love letters tell a story of pain and suffering, but deep deep love. I loved experiencing history as told through a perspective not always available to readers.

This book celebrates the charm of romance, as it can be, perhaps at its best. I was greatly satisfied by The Last Ring Home, being both a history book and a wonderful story, also covering a part of WWII that I knew little about. I loved the serendipity as well as the mysterious and amazing journey of the ring which kept me hooked. The love letters were truly moving.
