The text message is just three words: I need you.

*Unpopular opinion alert*: This book didn't work for me.

The Lying Game is a slow burning psychological thriller about four friends who are bound together by lies.

“A lie can outlast any truth.”

When 15 year old Isa Wilde is sent to coastal boarding school, Salten, she quickly befriends Kate, Thea, and Fatima. The girls participate in a game, called “The Lying Game,” which isolates their classmates and causes local townies to hate them.

There are 5 rules to the game: TELL A LIE, STICK TO YOUR STOR

This is an atmospheric and eerie psychological thriller from Ruth Ware. Take four teenage schoolfriends who set up a group that vies to create the most outlandish lies that they can get others to believe, and what you have is a recipe for potentially horrifying outcomes. This is exactly what the author does, creating two time lines when something terrible happens that results in the four girls being expelled from their school, although this does not stop them from lying. Their one proviso is tha ...more

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware is a 2017 Gallery Scout publication.

This latest thriller, by Ruth Ware, is an all- consuming, riveting tale, full of mind games and edgy suspense.

Isabel, Kate, Fatima, and Thea became fast friends while attending Salten boarding school, as teenagers. They began ‘the lying game’ to liven up their stay at the school, garnering them a terrible reputation on campus. But, ironically, their practice of lying came in handy, when they found themselves involved in a scandal

Isa, Kate, Fatima and Thea have met each other at a train station that its destination was Salten House (Somewhere like boarding school). They quickly became best friend. One day something bad happened and they had to make a decision, even though they knew it was a wrong decision. Now after seventeen years they reunited just because of one text:

This is one of those thrillers that is more like a flower unfolding than a tense whodunnit. In fact, I was pretty sure who did do it early on, but for me, that wasn't the point. It's the character studies above all that form the focus of the novel. Amongst them, Salten itself, that bleak place on the periphery where all things are possible. Interwoven here are the sun bright, happy memories of the past and the sinking dark of the present day. And so the stage is set for the big questions, not ju ...more

I enjoyed “In A Dark Dark Wood” and really thought “The Woman In Cabin 10” was great! I was a bit disappointed in “The Lying Game”. While the novel is well written I really didn’t feel that great “tense, exciting” feel of a thriller until perhaps the very last 30 pages. I also didn’t particularly care for the characters in this book.

A simple text “I need you” is sent from Kate sent to her three best friends from boarding school, Isa, Fatima and Thea. Within 24 hours each of the three have left t

I’ve loved both of Ruth Ware’s books to date and The Lying Game was probably the one I banged through fastest – once I was in I couldn’t get out again, sucker as I am for a good tale that involves school clique cover ups and future consequences. This author writes some of the twistiest tales out there and I’m never quite sure where she’s going until she gets there.

In The Lying Game we have four close friends who have hidden a horrible secret for years and now it is going to come back and haunt t

I love Ruth Ware!! This is her 3rd book and I have loved them all. The story of 4 girls - friends at school and beyond. The story jumps from school to the present and feeds us bit by bit the story of what happened - what the secret they are all keeping from everybody in their lives.

I listened to this book on Audible.com and Imogen Church the narrator is one of my absolute favourites. She brings the stories to life hooks you in. I just love the author and narrator combination here.

There is no friendship as intense as when you’re fifteen. Isa, Thea, Fatima and Kate were inseparable at boarding school, a tight closed unit, invincible in the company of each other. At first their game seemed like innocent fun – the Lying Game, invented by Kate and Thea to prove that they could get away with anything, make people believe what they wanted them to. Until it went too far and was no longer a game. Seventeen years later, one lie is still haunting them, threatening to destroy their ...more

I love recommending books to friends, and there are certain genres that people are always looking for recommendations...a good beach read, a coming of age story, a thriller. The Lying Game combines elements of all of these into one solid novel.

It's the story of four friends who met at boarding school when they were fifteen and bonded over their "Lying Game" a self-protective game they developed to insulate themselves from the harsher realities of life. Almost twenty years later the consequences

The Lying Game is the perfect novel for fans of Pretty Little Liars. It features a deep friendship between four young girls turned adults, secrets and lies, and an ending that will be great to some and disappointing to others.

What I enjoyed most about The Lying Game was Ware's ability to forge and cement the friendship between the four women (Isa, Kate, Fatima, and Thea) through flashbacks and Isa's internal thoughts.
The flashbacks contain enough information to keep the reader interested in th

Oh Ruth Ware, I expected more from you. Last year was all about The Woman in Cabin 10, which blurbs compared to Gone Girl and I’m sorry, but NO. I digress….finding The Woman in Cabin 10 a decent enough read, I was looking forward to seeing what Ms. Ware had up her sleeve next. I didn’t need another blockbuster novel, and in fact, preferred the follow-up to be quieter, but perhaps more finely tuned. I acknowledge that writers must be under immense pressure when penning their first story after a ...more

If you've read Ware's In a Dark, Dark Wood, then you'll recognise that the essence of the plot here is exactly the same: a group of girls were once close friends, something horrible happened, they went their separate ways and are brought back together again 17 years later; the horrible thing resurfaces, the truth is uncovered. Once again, too, we're in an unusual location, here a dilapidated mill which is sinking under the encroachment of water. What this book lacks, though, that the first one d ...more

The Lying Game is the third book I have read by this author and another great read.

The story is mainly set in present day with some quick flicks to the past so we get to see how all four girls meet and become friends. We also see everything from the point of view of Isa.

I was dying to know what secret the four women were keeping from everyone. The author though made sure that she didn’t tell me a moment before she was ready and it was pure torture. Even though a steady read, I was racing through

I cannot begin to explain how disappointed I was after reading this book.

As a stand-alone novel, it was okay. The characters were diverse and interesting and the plot was suspenseful, but I was able to guess most of the ending about 3/4 of the way through the book. I am mostly disappointed because Ruth Ware's other novels were so AMAZING and this was just, like I said, OKAY. Her previous books fit more into the thriller genre, whereas 'The Lying Game' fits more into the mystery or general ficti

It pains me so much to give a Ruth Ware novel just one star but I have to be honest...this book is boring and doesn't really make sense. It's really a shame but it was torture to finish it and oh my, so many problems...

CAUTION> some mild SPOILERS from now on!! I couldn't believe for a second in the friendship of the 4 protagonists. It never seemed real and the amount of time they had together could not convince me of the strong bound. It didn't make sense, either, how they kept in touch for

An enjoyable light read. I thought it was an interesting and unique idea to build a story on, although I pretty much had it figured what was coming up next here and there. Even so Ms Ware kept me interested and am happy to say it had redeemed itself in the end. I rated 3.5

My third book by Ruth Ware and I think I previously said she's our generation's Agatha Christie, which I still believe with this story. It's very much a who-done-it.. In this story we have 4 friends who went to a private girl's school in the remote beachside town of Salten. There they became fast friends, start The Lying Game, and became the "mean girls". After a scandal caused by The Lying Game, they were all expelled, very quietly and moved on to start their own adult lives. After 20 years the ...more

I'm a huge Ruth Ware fan so I was prepared to enjoy this book and of course I did! I'm also a sucker for books that take place at a school so the backstory of Salten was fascinating as well. Four friends, separated for seventeen years, reconvene when the mysterious text, "I need you" reaches them all. Bound by secrets and lies, the four women must puzzle out their next moves as the past threatens to destroy the lives they have created for themselves (and of course, hidden from their families). E

If Barbara Vine had written The Secret History, The Lying Game would have been the result. This is high praise for Ruth Ware, who has indeed, produced a superb literary thriller that is entirely riveting. Vine is a master at building complex characters; each with their own hidden passions, hate, motivations, and disturbing coping mechanisms. Ware is certainly on the same playing field with Vine; she excels at this particular bit of magic.

The Lying Game didn't woo me.

I have not read the Woman in Cabin 10 or In a Dark, Dark Wood. However, my friends who have read them, have enjoyed them. So I thought I would give her a try.

The Lying Game was painfully slow for me. I understand that the author had to build up the suspense in her narrative. I'm good with suspense, in fact, I love it, but in this case, I felt like nothing was really happening. I didn't feel like I learned a lot about their lying game or t

Thank you Edelweiss for my review copy of this book.

The Lying Game is about four friends who meet at boarding school and they all like to play a game..The Lying Game. It's harmless fun really. They don't pick on the new kids, the helpless ones. Just the ones that deserve it. Points are awarded for making up a lie and getting others to believe it. One of the rules is to bail out if you know you are about to get caught. Another rule and the most important rule is that you never lie to each other.

I was so thrilled to get this ARC from NetGalley and Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books as I really enjoyed Ruth Ware's In a Dark Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10. The story begins with intrigue...a dead body is found in a tidal pool in the tiny coastal English village of Salten. From here, we jump to 4 women who gather in Salten and it is made very clear they know the identity of the body. Their past at a boarding school in Salten is revealed bit by bit, and initially I had a vibe of The Secre ...more

I've read Ruth Ware's two previous novels and, whilst there were some things about them that annoyed me a bit, I did rather enjoy them, so I was interested to read this new one. I think it's her best one so far - it's not perfect, but it is gripping and intriguing.

It's narrated by Isa, who, along with her old schoolmates from the remote boarding school at Salten, Fatima and Thea, is summoned back to the town by Kate, who still lives there. Now in their 30s, the four left the school 17 years earl
