The Grim
In the darkness claws scraped against rock as something headed up out of the stygian gloom to hunt in the sheltering night. Silhouetted against the dying sunset a head emerged from the cave. Feline, graceful, powerful. It yawned. Even to a distant observer, the fangs would have been obvious. The creature was an apex predator, larger than a tiger and far more deadly. Mabel Cooper, Dartmoor National Park Ranger, must put aside her conservationist sensibilities when she is asked to help guide top big game hunter, Baxter Cobb, in his quest to track and kill the man-eater that was responsible for the death of a dog walker on the moor. But no big cats have escaped from the zoo. And as the death toll mounts, so do the questions about what this creature is. The hunters must come to terms with the fact that the ancient tales of horror, that have survived as folklore for centuries, will turn out to be based on more than just myth and legend. Eleanor Piper’s Grim is a dark and terrifying tale that draws on the rich history of ghastly legends connected with Dartmoor.
When faced with a spate of vicious attacks by what seems to be a big cat the feisty heroine, park ranger, Mabel Cooper does what she can to help track the beast. But things get complicated when professional hunter Baxter Cobb, an old flame of Mabel’s, is brought in to hunt the creature down. Worse, the creature itself proves to be no ordinary big cat.
The Grim offers a thrilling and blood soaked chase across the moor with a wonderful awareness of the vistas and peculiarities of the landscape woven into the narrative.

A great, 'Jaws-like' novella about the hunt for a monster that ticks all the right boxes for horror and folk-law fans. Obviously this is a short tale but, after a great set-up and middle, I felt it wound up a little too quickly. But still an enjoyable read and recommended!

THE literary horror opiate
BEFORE The Grim I loved a leisurely stroll on Dartmoor – not now! The Grim, quickly kicks you off the top of the food chain and makes you remember why you used to be afraid of the dark. The book is a story of survival on more than one level. Its visceral, unrelenting and vicious and that’s just the plot line! Dark doesn't begin to describe this novel.
The author; Piper, brings the reader into an authentic world, writing powerful scenes with great action and vivid surroundings. A true painting of the various terrains and societies, brought forth in lurid descriptions as the characters travel from place to place under duress. The story delivers protagonists who become stronger and better people as they hang on for survival. Piper captures the delicate balance of a fragile relationship between Mable Cooper and Baxter Cobb and throws in the essential elements to test the partners, their commitment to each other, and the durability of the relationship under the merciless and bloodthirsty effect of The Grim.
The reader will find this novel fast paced with interesting characters with lots of conflict, psychological and physical where they’ll hear the horrifying sounds, smells and tastes of the hunted.
This is a book you finish but it remains in your head well after. BE WARNED.

Very scary story that gives a believable new twist to the legend of the Dartmoor Beast (or is it a legend?!):
I love horror stories which make me want to keep on reading to find out what happens next, and The Grimm is deffinitely one of those! The story is fast moving and well thought through. This exciting, fast paced story gives the legend of the Dartmoor Beast a whole new twist and just when you think you have worked out what this terrifying beast is, you realise that it's a whole lot worse than you imagined!
I am a pretty sceptical person and before I started reading this book I found myself asking the question; if this book wants us to believe that the Dartmoor Beast really exists, why has the beast not been in the news permanently before this book was written? This book very cleverly explains all that. It's a believeable story. Don't venture on to the moors at night..... Great read!

The Grim is a gripping, fast paced horror novel set in the wonderful Dartmoor National Park. It follows a small group of specially trained people as they attempt to hunt down the mysterious animal that has been killing people on the moors. With a atmospheric opening scene to introduce the story, it leads you right into the world of The Grim.
Not for the faint-hearted, this book is one you just can't put down. At 110 pages, it's easy enough to pick up and read right through the end as I did. Once started, you simply have to know what happens next!
