Daddy with a badge is another Maternity Row book. Danni was mentioned in the previous book, as a psychiatrist. Danni lost her husband a few years ago and the accident that killed him injured their daughter badly, so she was in and out of hospitals through-out. Danni remained a rock through all of this never really breaking down and when things became a bit better an opportunity was dropped into her lap by her father to take some time off for herself. During this Danni being susceptible and wanting to have a father for her daughter feel in love with and married a charming man. Charming? You get it?Turns out the man she married was a con-man who preyed on women and cleaned them out. So, when the the book opens Danni has been conned, is struggling financially and is pregnant. Then two federal agents turn up on her door and one of them is a blast from the past. Rafe and Danni grew up together. Danni was rich and spoiled and Rafe was the son of the help. As they grew older, feeling developed between them which they tried to ignore as Danni was betrothed since birth to Mark(her husband), but teenage emotions get in the way, and they almost cross the line when Rafe stops since he cares too much about his family to dis-honor Danni, but it is too late and they were seen, Rafe is run-off by Danni's brother and threatened and being only 18 he leaves his family and Danni behind. Danni felt that Rafe abandoned her. The lies a family weaves. We find out much later about what actually went down, over-protective brother, fiancee. So, Rafe has moved on he's a government agent now on the trail of a man who cons women when the clues lead him to Danni. Rafe is determined to be professional since what happened with Danni cost him his family and more and Danni too is determined to maintain the same distance because of her personal situation and the hurt she put Lyssa her daughter through. The book is basically all about protecting Danni and her daughter from the bad guy. The book isn't bad it just isn't that great. Danni and Rafe talk and discover the what might have been factor is still there, Danni also tries to mend Rafe's relationship with his family. There is a moment in the book when Rafe takes a decision without consulting Danni and when she finds out there a repercussion. The book was just fine, a good read but not great. The characters lacked something and didn't pull me in or make me root for them.
Rafe and Danni grew up together. They were friends, but then, when they were teenagers they fell in love. That didn’t end up well, mostly because of the class difference. He left, leaving Danni heartbroken.
Years later they meet again. Rafe is a FBI agent who’s investigating a con man who seduces women, marries them, and then robs them blind. Danni is one of his victims. Talk about fate.
This is my least favourite of the Maternity Row series. The story, the characters weren’t nearly as engaging as in the previous books.
Danni has way too much pride, and she had a few TSTL moments. Rafe is okay, but too stubborn, and a few actions of his were not so great .
There were some good things about the book. Rafe’s relationship with Lyssa, Danni’s daughter, for one. He really tries to win her over, earn her trust. His love for Danni’s unborn child, where he doesn’t even care who the biological father is. The Maternity Row gang. :-)
