This nice little surprise was mailed to me by a friend who’d resurrected it from some boxes of basement books, knowing I like a little spice. Billed as an erotic novel, the jury is out on whether it should be considered erotica, but I feel there’s plenty enough plot between ‘scenes’ to tip it in favor of romance.
In 1920s India, Devorah has traveled with her husband to live in a colony of other British people who are occupying India. This is the tale of one woman who disagrees with the British occupation, and wishes to treat her handsome and finely-chiseled head-servant as a friend if not equal.
The plot is simple and the novel is short, but it offers an alluring visual journey through Indian sunsets and dark skinned beauties. Devorah behaves in naive and unrealistically careless ways, but she also owns the consequences of her actions without complaint.
The attraction between races is smoldering, and the ending is perfect. I enjoyed living in this lovely, sexy world enough to wish it could last quite a bit longer.

Another book from the library of my friend.
Set in India in 1925. Written in 2000.
While I can appreciate that 1925 had different sensibilities it was surprising to me that the writing felt a bit like it was from 1925. It has interesting premises. And the arc is good. But it's dry despite its rich possibilities. Even the erotica seems dry, mechanical.
