Raiders of the China Coast is an account of a little known CIA operation that trained and managed anti-communist guerrillas and agents on the various islands that were retained by the Taiwanese regime (the “Republic of China”) after the Chinese mainland was captured by the Chinese communists. The author, Frank Holober, spent his life in the CIA and later in several academic institutions teaching about China. I had high hopes for this book. It touched on a little-known aspect of not only the Korean War but the complicated role of China in US foreign policy as well. It was also an important opportunity to demonstrate the importance of covert ops in war by someone who was there.

In an effort to divert China’s attention from the Korean front in 1950 and relieve pressure on the allied forces, the CIA sponsored a series of raids along the southeastern coast of China conducted by anti-Communist guerrillas.

I really had never heard of U.S.-backed Taiwanese guerrilla operations mounted against China along its southeastern coast during the Korean War, only the stock "the U.S. 7th Fleet occupied the Taiwan Strait in order to keep either Taiwan or China from starting something that would detract from the main effort on the Korean Peninsula." I think these operations, which petered out in the 1954-55 timeframe, were more of an offering to the ROC government on Taiwan, for they really didn't amount to an ...more
