Lengthy little book filled to the brim with historical facts and quotes about one of my favorite beverages. I enjoyed what was here. The fact that over 370+ pages held few post-1990 quotes was wearisome. I don't recall anything after 1920 in here.
This was a nice collection of verse (maybe finding an apogees with Gloucester's 16th Century beer tourist poet John Taylor), quotes, aphorisms, and trivia about beer in history. The "lore" is mostly chronological from remote antiquity to the 20th Century. Some themes that stood out include the cross-cultural connection to magic and the diving with beer and other "spirits". Also, the pre-hops beers of Pict heather beer, Egyptian brews served with bittering condiments, early Western Hemishphere concoctions like chicha, and more. Actually, I would probably have given this 4 stars if not for the typographical choice of blurry font often in shades like dark yellow on burnt sienna paper...
A collection of more or less relevant quotes about beer, and some seriously dumbed down "facts". Adequate bathroom literature for the less accomplished beer drinker.
This cute book the size of your pocket holds a lot of fascinating info. Factual information about the history of beer and brewing is interspersed with quotes from famous folks like Rudyard Kipling, Shakespeare, and Martin Luther, as well as quotes from film and literature. One gets the sense that beer has always been and always will be, so long as there is civilization. [return][return]This book is best for coffee tables or by the john and makes for an entertaining, fascinating read.
