I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Lady Magdalen's father has been imprisoned in the Tower and charged with treason against Queen Anne. Magdalen's step-mother is pregnant and even though she's shunned Magdalen for being a bastard, she begs her to go to London and plead for her father's case. Magdalen would do anything for her father so she takes off with her maid Agnes.

Wondering if I read the same ARC as everyone else???

I had high hopes for this historical romance but the story was too jumbled, the plot too convoluted and I never connected with any of the characters.

The story is about Magdalen Keith, the illegitimate daughter of a Jacobite lord in 1700 Scotland. To make a long story short, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong for poor Maddie. And it all starts when she meets and falls in love with a Scottish second son and Navy lieutenant, Aiden

Well, I hate to say it but The Highland Commander was a bit depressing. I think the author has done an amazing job in keeping it as real and true to the times...and unfortunately, that's where she lost me. I read romance for the feel good feelings and those were few and far between. Everything that could go wrong goes wrong and it never seems to settle. I just wanted a little while where the couple had a chance to get to know each other without drama. There were

Lady Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl. She doesn’t partake in balls and isn’t a fan of the fancier side of society. She prefers playing her harp or attending to patients at her hospital for battered women, but at the Hogmanay ceremony thrown by her father all of that changes. Navy lieutenant, Aiden Murray, isn’t expecting to be enticed by the girl at the Hogmanay ball or to spend

Highland Commander is a brilliant and stunning work that Amy Jarecki has brought to us. In Highland Commander, we have a story of two people that meet at a masqued Scottish dance. They have a vibrant and stunning connection to each other, but Aiden--our delicious hero is a sea commander for England, even though he considers himself Scottish. Our heroine, Magdalen is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish Earl. But later on, when Magdalen's
I went back and forth on my feelings for this one as I read it. I was looking forward to this story because I remembered Lord Murray from The Highland Duke as the young man with his nose in a book asking questions that would be considered by most to be inappropriate. He had promise to be a unique and interesting character.

Unfortunately, I felt like that initial introduction to his character was not very indicative of the character presented here in The Highland Commander.

On one hand, I

The Highland Commander finds its inspiration in real life events surrounding the Jacobite uprisings of the early 1700s. I’ll admit that my knowledge of 18th Century Scottish politics is sadly lacking; however I know enough to understand the danger behind a Scotsman discussing the cause during this period.

Lord Aiden Murray and his fellow officers of the naval ship Royal Mary arrive at the Earl Marischal’s Hogmanay ball eager for entertainment and a chance to mingle with their countrymen after

Lady Magdalen assists in running a hospital for abused woman. She's the illegitimate daughter of an Earl who loves and supports her but is not ever really acknowledged or part of the family due to his wife (her step-mother) wants nothing to do with Magdalen. Her one true friend and companion is her lady's maid Agnes. Magdalen tries to make the best of her life, she's a strong and secure in who she is,

Love on the run….

Oh, the Lords can be found everywhere! Scottish transplants Aiden and Maddie paths crossed again and again as they found themselves in the thick of things in London. They navigated political unrest and the stirrings of their own hearts with both a threat to their well-being…

Aiden was the second son so he followed his heart to the sea. He was a lieutenant in the navy though pigeonholed due to his noble status. He worked for his rank, his family name did not pay for it. If only

The Highland Commander book two of Amy Jarecki's Lords of the Highlands series. Unfortunately this book just kind of feel flat for me. The beginning started off really well and I liked the characters and I liked the plot but how it played out and the dialogue felt dry. It built up the story then it plateaued and nothing really happened until the end and even the ending was anti-climatic.

FINAL DECISION: High adventure and yet thoughtful and long term relationship between two characters caught in real historical events. I loved the intense historical reality of this book and the relationship between these two which is sweet.

THE STORY: This book takes place in early 1700s with the rise of the intrigue between England and Scotland. First Lieutenant Aiden Murray is glad to finally be off his navy ship after two years. When he attends a masquerade, he is enchanted by the kiss of Lady

This is the first time I've read a book by Amy Jerecki. I'm always looking for new historical authors that I can add to the ones that I read. I didn't read The Highland Duke but wanted too. But as busy as I get with books I just hadn't fit it in.

Then The Highland Commander came up for review and I really wanted to try it and see if this was a author for me.

Amy's highland romance historicals are always inventive and different. This one is delightful, sometimes hard to read and oh so satisfying.

This story is set during the tumultuous time in history where Scotland finds itself divided as to who the true ruler is. Henry VIII died without a living son as heir. The line of succession went to his sister, Margaret Tudor who married James IV of Scotland. Independent Scotland being incorporated into England didn't go well. And to sum up history, we have

I'm traveling and working in a remote location right now, so it took me forever to read this book. Like a whole week or more! That is an eternity when it comes to how fast I can normally get my books read. I find that it takes some of the enjoyment out of the story when I keep having to put it down and pick it back up. Luckily, Amy has written a captivating page turner full of attraction, political intrigue, and espionage!

Jarecki weaves a tale so descriptive of the time and place that it pulls you in and doesn't let you go until the end. You can just feel and cringe at the terror Maddie feels while she's imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle. I just love to read about these strong, resilient people, but I am so grateful that I don't actually live in that time.

Aiden and Maddie had met at a masqued ball on Hogmanay Eve a few months before, and Aiden had been immediately smitten with the lady in blue. I'm a big fan of historical romance. I love the forbidden kisses, the tension between characters, the innocence, the smooth and intoxicating writing style. However, Amy Jarecki doesn't deliver the traditional historical romance you may love. The writing style is a tad bit more modern, throwing away the classic writing style you may be familiar with from Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, etc.
