3rd bust in a row. I couldnt exactly tell what this book was about since the author did that annoying look at characters inner thoughts thing rather than a real blurb telling me the basic plot outline of the story. It sounded like h fleeing an abusive ex though which is quite possibly my favorite trope, and the dude on the cover was hot and tattooed so I decided to give it a shot. Almost immediately I realized this wasnt going to go well. The book has shifting 1st person POVs, which can occasion 3rd bust in a row. I couldnt exactly tell what this book was about since the author did that annoying look at characters inner thoughts thing rather than a real blurb telling me the basic plot outline of the story. It sounded like h fleeing an abusive ex though which is quite possibly my favorite trope, and the dude on the cover was hot and tattooed so I decided to give it a shot. Almost immediately I realized this wasnt going to go well. The book has shifting 1st person POVs, which can occasionally work but it more often fails than flies. The author nicely tells us at the beginning of every chapter whose POV to expect. She puts little hearts around their names....this was a sign to me that this book was gonna be a bit too juvenile for my tastes but I already quit one tonight so I really wanted to give this a shot. My fears began to be confirmed when the h though "he's a total douche, but he's not that big of an asshole" wait what...that makes no sense. Then she feels the need to tell us this isn't the opening chapter with a girl with stepbrother fantasies...because you know thats the first thing that popped into my brain when she says shes living in her brother's guest house (because that was the first mention of him being her step not real brother). Then her brother volunteers her for babysitting duty. She's been moping over leaving her ex...HIS NAME IS YURI WHAT EWWW who hooks up with someone named yuri. And apparently he was a crime lord (shocker) didnt seem that abusive so far but was controlling. So she left and had been moping so long her brother felt the need for intervention. And hey she was ok with this because Jude is just soooooo dreamy *gags*. Jude leave his child with her but is relieved to return and see that the house hasnt burned down because she's a flake but hey at least she's "a hot flake" so its ok that he left her to babysit without actually making sure she knew how to take care of a child. Then they idk share a look and are ready to hump like bunnies. We then learn why sex scenes are better off in third person.
"I didn't put on a bra this morning because...it's stupid to wear a bra when my breasts don't sag"
She apparently knew his cock was 10 in just by looking at it. 2 things: I've literally never met a woman in real life that desired a penis so big being inserted in to her because that shitll hit your cervix and that fucking hurts. Second, is this like a magic superpower she had? the ability to measure a penis using nothing more than her eyes? lolol
"Don't be a dick tease" he tells her...despite the fact that she's already mostly naked. I loathe that term its always a pejorative and i'm not gonna be into any dude that says that to a woman.
He calls her "girl" doing sexy times...not the end all be all but super creepy to me
"Part of me always wondered if my pussy is broken because i like to be touched so much-and when i am my pussy drips in pleasure. More than drips. My pussy gets sopping wet when turned on. I gush, and if i get finger fucked nice and hard, i start squirting." At this point i was laughing so hard i dropped my nook and knew it was time to quit. I even tried to look up the author to see their gender because this sounds a lot more like a male authors writing than a female's.

Bottom line: this was a dnf because every part of it was ridiculous esp the sex scenes. hopefully tomorrows book goes better ...more

This was a struggle to finish reading.....the characters totally sucked. Jude, the tatted up bad boy, yeah right made me want to cringe....Evie was a bitch, Holden was an asshat, and don’t even get me started on Cat. This book just didn’t work for me.

When Catalina sees Jude and her reaction ... you know your baseline is a pretty hefty suspension of disbelief. [And then the archaic view of how a person can/would get custody - of course the birth parent is important but it isn't and hasn't been the end all be all for a long time.]

ANYWAY. Cute story overall, I like how sometimes the heroine just had no fucks to give - which made her more mature and stable - but other times things just didn't make sense.

Seriously, this book just wasn't it for me.

Why?
Well, I can't really say, probably mainly because of the characters:

I liked the main characters, really did.
Jude's a great dad, doesn't care about blood and all that, he just loves his daughter.

This was a quick and sweet read. But there are some issues, that I just can't overlook and that bother me really.

I liked Jude. He was sweet and 100% there for his little daughter. He tried to save his baby mamma, but she wouldn't have it. And you can't help someone, who doesn't want to be helped. He was sweet with Cat and didn't treat her like a ONS.

Cat, well, this girl has problems. I know that what happened to her was really cruel and sick. And I can understand that she needed a new 2.5 stars.

This was a quick and sweet read. But there are some issues, that I just can't overlook and that bother me really.

I liked Jude. He was sweet and 100% there for his little daughter. He tried to save his baby mamma, but she wouldn't have it. And you can't help someone, who doesn't want to be helped. He was sweet with Cat and didn't treat her like a ONS.

Cat, well, this girl has problems. I know that what happened to her was really cruel and sick. And I can understand that she needed a new beginning and just left her old life. But, we don't know anything about her old life, like her friends and her job and how she made her decision to just run away home to her brother. We don't know any details about her abusive relationship. And somehow I didn't really feel sad for Cat because I couldn't take it serious. Nobody in this book took her abuse seriously, it was just a passing thought. No one offered her safety, peace, a shoulder to cry on, or lend an ear. Nothing was done! What a crap family!

I had issues with Rachel, the mother of the baby. I don't like when woman are portrayed as selfish, crazy, immature, drug addicted and so on.

The heroines mother was just over the top. I hated her. She receives the news, that a man has abused her daughter for more than a year, and that said man assaulted her that night in her own home. What does said mother do? Not one fucking thing! I got so worked up. It was so sad. But the saddest part was, that everyone thought it normal. No one questioned her response.

I hated all the side characters. They were mean, bullies, self-centered, "omg-I'm-so-beautiful-and-rich-and-famous". No one of the so called friends and families were helpful, protective or just "there" for either Cat or Jude.

Then here was my issue with the dialogue. No one in real life speaks like that to their friends and families. It was just so wrong. That's not conversation. I don't really know how to describe it.

The villain in the story was just laughable. Seriously? And then Poof, the whole "I'm so afraid, he's texting and stalking me and I don't know what to do" is resolved with one single phone call from her brother? Unbelievable - and not in a good way.

The epilogue was well, I don't know. I hated the idea of a tripple-wedding. Because they weren't "friends" at all. So phony.

Well enough about my ranting. I loved Cat and Jude and how they were with little Ettie. ...more

Great Read! This is my first time reading Frankie Love's work but it certainly won't be my last. The dialogue is smart, well executed, at times seductive and witty with loads of little innuendos and flows effortlessly. The characters aren't complex but they are realistic and completely engaging. It was a very satisfying feel-good read! Jude was a little too weak for my liking. At the beginning I felt sorry for him when his girlfriend left him with their six month old baby. Then Jude started seeing Catalina, who obviously had issues of her own but seemed nice enough. It was when Jude stood by and allowed his cousin to bad mouth Cat that I lost any empathy for this guy. I really enjoyed Jude's love for his baby girl, Etta and how he cared for her after being abandoned by little Etta's mom. Jude has serious issues of being a fixer. Then along comes, Catalina, his best friend's little sister . Cat also has issues of her own, including an ex who won't let go.
