The 2nd part of the Pillow Book with Fengjiu and Donghua.

As great, possibly most likely even greater than the 1st part, for here we get to see even more of Donghua's shamelessness (and also jealousy) and Fengjiu's remarkable spirit.
And heartbreak.

I really can't find the words to describe the book, just love it so much.
Our fate may be set, but it's not set in stone. We can change it.

The Pillow Book Part 1 review: Part 1

P.S. For those who may not know but come across the plagiarism thing since some people are spouting that crap here - the accusation of plagiarism is towards Tang Qi's Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms book aka To the Sky Kingdom NOT The Pillow Books! Seriously, people, get your facts straight and stop sprouting nonsense! If you want to bash the book/author, do it at the proper place/book. Stop posting your nonsense where it's not true in any way! So annoying!

Sorry to those who are innocent and had to read this ^ but it is truly sooooo annoying to see them bashing The Pillow Books when they're not plagiarisms. I can understand people's doubts & accusations towards the TMOPB book, but not here, that's just them going too far and simply ranting their anger where it's not due, sigh

My heart is screaming to the maximum level....
I really blamed it to the tv series Eternal Love why Dijun Dong Hua has a place in my heart

plus the actor Vengo Gao really portrayed well the character of Dong Hua - better than I actually expected: cold, aloof, snob (well what could I expect from a stone? hahahaha).
I never actually find men with silver hair attractive but well, this Hero proved me wrong...

He was one of the oldest deities in the heavens. He actually had no records of beginnings but it was said that he was born from a stone and adopted by a certain family (I forgot). His age was never revealed because he was that old hahaha. He was once the heavenly lord but relinquished it to the ancestors (let me just say that word) of Ye Hua.

Now we have the young fox queen, Bai Fengjiu, only 32, 000 years old.

Dilraba Dilmurat also portrayed the character well. And she had a great chemistry with Vengo Gao that there and then I decided to become their follower rather than Bai Qianqian and Ye Hua hahaha.

Well, the series and the books are way different. The story...the plot... the everything.
In the book, Dong Hua and Fengjiu actually interacted (as let's say human beings) during the Wedding Ceremony of Ye Hua and Bai Qianqian. And then I felt giddy during their moments. It was a light read.

THEN THE BOOK 2...
And I was like

Fengjiu was inside Aranya's dream. And that freaking dream took I think 70-80% of the entire book!!!!!!!!!! YES I'M RANTING hahaha... There are so many unnecessary details and characters that could have been compressed in a chapter or two or maximum of five chapters. But NOOOOOOOO! The author decided to spend the majority of the book in a dream!

And the story was dragging that I wanted to skip everything until epilogue! DAMN!
I just wish that the dream state was 5 chapters max, then Fengjiu and Dong Hua continued in "reality". Because I felt that the chapters towards the end were hurried... DAMN!

By the way, as much as I want this:

this

and this

Dong Hua and Fengjiu should attend a seminar for couples regarding "how to communicate with your partners" or that sort of stuff! Hahaha. Their miscommunication kept on dragging until book 2 for Pete's sake! And I wanted to strangle Fengjiu in the later chapters too.. geez..

But SIGH.. seeing this

and this

placates my angry heart hahaha! Gaah, I'm hopeless! I want to give this 2 stars but since I love the couple so 4 stars hahaha.

After I have watched TMOPB, I wanted to know the real story of Dong Hua and Feng Jiu as in the novel. And thus, I read both volume 1 & 2. Well.. guess what happened after that! I had totally.. completely got obsessed with the novel!!!! Yeah, I admit it. I have never ever ever liked a novel, this much. This one is a true epic for those who like romance love stories. It’s also very funny at the same time because of Dong Hua’s character. I have fallen in love with his arrogance and face-thickness. Even though, he did truly love and worry about this little red fox. Yeah.. it’s a truly lovely love story. OMG! I can’t help going crazy till now whenever I think about this novel!! I really recommend this one!! If you guys haven’t read it yet, you should try it!! For those who can’t speak Chinese like me, you can read in English version on novelupdates.com.

Wow! Truly.
I read To the sky kingdom a while ago and though I enjoyed it, it was just ok, fun, light reading to pass the time. I liked mostly the buddhist, taoist aspects and the secondary characters of that novel. I know that book's been accused of plagiarism, but I was reading as I discovered that and since I don't understand Chinese and therefor don't know much about the issue I finished it anyway.
For all I know this sequel's free of accusations and it's a million times better. I really liked the writing and the story's beautiful and captivating. Dong Hua was one of my favorite characters in the first book and the drama, so I was thrilled this novel was focused on him and Fenjiu. It has two volumes, so it's delightfully long and complex, full of twists and non linear narrative, which I adored as it kept me guessing all the time what was really going on.
The illustrations by Ibuki Satsuki really add to the story and are absolutely breathtaking.

The book beautifully weaves together elements of fantasy, romance, and adventure to create a captivating story that left me wanting more. I should say I have read it more than 3 times. If it can be this beautiful in the english version, I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been in the Chinese version.

"I would rather be with you in a place that feels like nowhere, than in a place that feels like everywhere with someone else." This line perfectly captures the deep and profound love between the two main characters, Feng Jiu and Dong Hua.

The world-building in the book is also phenomenal, transporting the reader to a world of gods, goddesses, and immortal beings. Tang Qi's writing is elegant and descriptive, painting vivid images in the reader's mind.

Dong Hua Dijun - After reading this book has become my character crush 😁

The 2nd book is also good as the first one . According to the drama and the book there are some changes that’s for sure. Otherwise the story telling is same as the drama. Absolutely love this book.

Binge read this! 3.5/5.

I watched the drama first , so this was a nice change to the portrayal of their story in ten miles of peach blossom. Fengjiu is much more mature in the books compared to the dramas and donghua dijun is, well, donghua dijun. I don’t think it’s quite as gritty and dramatic as ten miles of peach blossom, but nevertheless still enjoyable to read. Fengjiu is super innocent and naive, and that can either be funny in so scenes or nail grating in others because this results in a lot of miscommunication and misinterpretation between her and donghua dijun. The writing was also a bit too flowery for my taste? It could be the translations, but I found myself skimming a lot to get to the actual meat of the plot. It’s actually a problem for me on the dramas too since I feel that they are unnecessarily long (60 episodes each drama!) and have too much dialogue and fluff. Otherwise, there were some pretty cute scenes (sadly censored in the drama) which were fun to read.

The ending was a bit... ??? I didn’t particularly enjoy that aspect of the book, hence the -.5 star.

If you are a fan of the drama, I highly encourage you read this to supplement the drama! There are some scenes in here that the drama has watered down, so reading this will enhance your drama watching experience!

3.5 stars. This is actually much better than the long-winded, tedious, love-triangle bogged Pillow Book I. Though a reader will probably come away from this wondering, "Can’t we just communicate?" Half the problems here would've been avoided if our main couple explained things to each other. But hey, that's half the fun of romance novels, I suppose!

Tang Qi still has the annoying habit of info dumping, so we have characters spouting exposition at the most convenient places. Also, finally Feng Jiu has a backbone, and does something which throws a spanner in the works, but it was actually a relief after multiple chapters of her just whining and pining after Dong Hua. A HEA ending which leaves me dying to know more about their life together after that. How cruel of TQ to leave us like that.

I'm actually looking forward to the third book, which is reportedly about Liansong and Cheng Yu, one of my favourite characters in the series. It'll probably take FOREVER to come out, especially after the plagiarism scandal that implicated The Sky Kingdom book.

PS: I read an English, fan-translated version of the novel.

Volume 1 was off to a great start, it was a good novel which kept me entertained despite its length. It made me like the second pairing of the 3310 world, who I abhored so much in the drama version. I enjoyed reading Fengju's quest for love despite the many attempts and failures, because her personality was strong and I continuously wanted to cheer her for it.

However, volume 2 did not continue this pace, rather it messed everything up. The shadow identities was a good plot device, but greatly suffered from a disjointed narrative. it was like the author tried to put all of her ideas in one book. I was beginning to love donghua, but then he became so immature and incompetent. I can now confidently say he's worse than Li Jing. The more I read, the more I come to hate him. His character is a mess alright, and not that amazing like the author wants me to believe. Yep, I almost fell for Ice Face, good thing I didn't fall for his pabebe moves. In the end, Yehua is my only bae. ❤

To fans of the show(s) considering reading this book: I ask you to consider where your preferences lie in your stories. Sometimes, ignorance is better than the unsavory, and while I largely liked the first volume of The Pillow Book, I honestly wish I hadn't read the second.

Ok so. Here's the thing. I saw both of the shows, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Eternal Love of Dream, before I read this, and I'm so glad I did.

Fate as a major relationship obstacle was handled exquisitely in Peach Blossoms, and the characters were a lot of fun to watch interact, so of course I chased down their show as well. For all that I enjoyed Dream, I was periodically terribly confused about why things were happening. So when I found that there were fan translations of The Pillow Book, I jumped at the chance to read them.

Volume I was enlightening, adding an extra dimension to the extremely-faithful-to-the-book show I'd already seen, and filling in gaps I didn't realize I'd had.

But then when I reached volume II...oh no. There were so many--seriously so many--things about this relationship that made me want to tell Fengjiu to get out quickly. While yes, it clarified a lot of points that I didn't understand from watching the show alone, I find I preferred my mystification to the clarity that this book provided. There's a twisted quality to this relationship, which Donghua chooses to build on a foundation of deception and lies, that prevents me from taking any joy in this story whatsoever.

The devastating thing is that the show, despite being as book-accurate as anyone could hope in every other way, went out of its way to correct this, ensuring that the two protagonists are largely operating on a level field, and respectful of one another before their relationship comes to fruition. Yet, because so much of the dialogue is lifted word for word, I find I now have to make an active effort to eliminate the distaste I feel for the book version of Donghua as I watch the show.

I will now attempt to forget this book as completely as I possibly can, in order to preserve my love of the shows that brought me here.

If you want to understand some of the gaps, I recommend reading volume I alone, and maybe a couple chapters at the very end of volume II at most. If you choose to read both volumes, I can only wish you luck.

"This book was copycatted from a gay love novel "桃花债“ (literally meaning ”Love Debt“) and other novels. The story is good because the original stories are even better. The author/plagiarist Tang Qi has been refused to apologise to the author of the original work all these years. Tang Qi is bad at writing and extremely good at plagiarising and marketing for her illegal works. That is the reason why you are now reading this copied novel
By reading this book and even paying for it, you are actually funding a theft, and you are hurting the original author, a humble and honest writer who sees writing as her life.
As a Chinese, I find it extremely embarrassing and shameful to admit that in my home country, a theft gets fame and fortune while people who work hard and honestly get nothing! I am really sorry that my fellow people are cheating.
I cannot stop you from reading and liking this book. However, Since you are spending your time and money on this book, you are entitled to know what you are actually doing!

I hope that this short review shows how much I love this novel and this is one of the gems in the Chinese historical fantasy subgenre.

This book focuses more on the relationship between the two main characters and the reason why they given a chance to be "fated". This is also the reason why I love this second half so much.

This novel just centers around the two characters and the trials they went through to get their HEA with little to no side stories for the side characters. There were a lot of times I laughed and cried because of this book.

Like I said with the first volume, the translator did a great job translating the second volume, including the nuances that go along with it.

I really hated how the drama screwed up some parts of this volume in favor of bland sequences.

I love the character in this movie. At first ( 东华 ) dong hua was so cold towards ( 凤九 ) feng jiu yet later on, once he found out that he actually loves feng jiu and wants to make her his empress, he’s so protected of her even thinking how to protect her even after he die. Which girl doesn’t want this kind of love? I’ve read this numerous times and watched the drama so many times but I still haven’t get tired of it. Love the way he was jealous yet still think about how she’d feel if he did something or eliminate somebody and gave her affections like A LOT of them.

Extremely interesting plot all the way to the ending. I definitely love it. This one in comparison to the series Eternal Love of Dream - which was supposedly made after the books - is way better and way different story wise. Reading the book made alot more sense in many areas. Did not like how the movie makers changed so many of the book parts for the movie. Subtle changes is OK, but the amount of changes.... So uncool

I loved this one so much because it told the story of that white haired god & the white fox chic.
Although it was a tragic love story as well (especially since she left with their child and diddnt even tell him, even hid from him!) it was cute to read.

I really would have wished there was more than to how it ended but overall it was nice as well.

Since I’d read the books before the TV series came out, the feelings and emotions were literally raw and on point. The actress really acted the character but still I couldn’t watch the series because the plot was messed up . The novel is the best.
