As more is revealed about the unique characters featured in the Bayou Magic miniseries, I become further captivated by their abilities plus behavior. Anyone who is a shadow hunter faces danger on a regular basis, where these brave persons put the safely of others before their own time and again. The heroine in the second book may be very different from this group that fights spirits with evil intentions, but she is also courageous and does not easily back down when threatened. Cruel beings definitely hide in the Alabama bayou, and two individuals may be all that stands in the way of them becoming powerful and causing much havoc. Debbie Herbert imaginatively brings her Bayou Magic miniseries to life, and BAYOU SHADOW PROTECTOR is original and extremely emotional.

Since the Fae know malicious spirits are threatening their survival, April Meadows has been sent to the human world in order to get help from Native American shadow hunters. Chulah Rivers is one of the warriors that watches over Bayou La Siryna, and finding a lone woman in the woods near his home is very unusual yet not alarming. But April has a specific mission to complete along with a personal task of her own, and she is determined to get Chulah’s cooperation as a shadow hunter while also gaining his trust. Perhaps using feminine wiles will work for her, as she does not want to use any Fae abilities.

To get the needed information to Chulah about the dangerous spirits that must be eliminated, April will get close to the man she has long admired. She already knows much about him, as she has watched this particular male for years. Though the Fae just want to use the gifted hunter so their enemy is finally gone, she dreams of him actually caring for her as she does him. Although April had thought her plan would be easy, getting Chulah to agree will take more cunning endeavors than she first thought.

When Debbie Herbert comes up with a concept for her paranormal books, the premise is always original and certainly entertaining. The Bayou Magic miniseries cleverly blends Native American folklore into a present-day problem, resulting in a story filled with innovative ideas and plenty of distinct characters. Chulah is a loner, and his preference to take care of things himself may have made him tougher but has also taken away his ability to feel some emotions. A past event has caused much guilt over the years, and not being able to fully trust April just adds to his personal troubles. She does make some decisions based on what she secretly saw, but knowledge does not always lead to success. There were situations where I ached for her as she so desperately wanted Chulah to like her. Though there is a real connection between the couple, sometimes even an electrifying one, a relationship needs more than desire so they experience lots of challenges.

The peril in the story is very real and goes along with the mythology. Debbie Herbert made me want to believe in the carefully played out incidents depicted with colorful details. I fretted over what choices either Chulah or April would eventually choose, as many lives could be affected if they decided incorrectly. Though the first book in the miniseries would not have to be read first, what caused the current troubles in the Alabama bayou would be known beforehand. BAYOU SHADOW PROTECTOR is inventively creative.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an HONEST review

What do you get when you throw fairies into Native American lore? A Debbie Herbert masterpiece! Chulah Rivers is part of the ancient band of shadow hunters. He and his clan roam Bayou La Syrena keeping it safe from evil spirits. Unbeknownst to him he's had a Fairy looking over his shoulders in the form of April Meadows.
April has known Chulah and watched over him since both were teens. She's fallen in love with him and is now tasked by the Fae Council to recruit him and his fellow Shadow Hunters to aid them in defeating a great evil.
While assuming human form April hopes to accomplish her task for the Council and make Chulah fall in love with her, and if that wasn't enough she has a few secrets from the past to exorcise.

I loved Chulah, he is all the things you want in an Romantic Hero. He's smart, faithful, kind, and honorable. He has a strong sense of family which he proves time and again in his dealings with his own dysfunctional one. When he meets April, he is still nursing the wound of his father's death many years ago when he was a teen. He's also nursing a broken heart or rather wounded pride as his love interest rebuffs him in the first scene of the book.
April is a great heroine. She's brave, loyal, and true to herself. She has a lot on her plate at the beginning of the book. She has to convince the Shadow Hunters to help the Fae. She has also independently added the finding her long lost mother, falling in love, and getting Chulah to forgive her for a terrible tragedy she may have caused.
At first I thought this might be overload for one character, but Debbie has done a wonderful job of making it all work and creating an entertaining and fun story. I read it in 3 Hours!!! I loved that This series is within the same world as her mermaids. The Shadowhunters live in Bayou La Syrena and I kept wondering if they knew about the the Borsage Mermaids (hahaha). I am now at the point where I wish Bayou La Syrena was real, because I would pack up now!

Chulah Rivers, shadow hunter, is used to strange happenings in the bayou. But when April Meadows appears out of nowhere, Chulah has a hard time believing. She also seems to know a lot about his past. He is understandably suspicious when she wants to help in a battle that will preserve both the human world and the Fae Realm. April has been sent to help in a coming battle. She is soon in over her head and only Chulah can save her.

There were so many interaction between the characters which I think I would have understood better if I read the first book. In spite of this, I found the book to be amazing. I enjoyed reading it and nothing turned out as I thought. There were many surprises and Chulah had a lot of changes coming in his life that he did not expect. I enjoyed reading this one and look forward to finding more in the series. There is so much life and unusual happenings in the pages of Bayou Shadow Protector. Pick this one up and prepare to be pulled into the pages starting with page one.

Are you into the mysticism and stories of paranormal activity in the swamps and bayous of The South? I am and I really enjoyed this second installment Bayou Shadow.

A bit about this story without giving away any spoilers but I hope to wet your appetite.

Meet April Meadows, a woman in search of assistance but she has a hidden agenda and may have to use her lady bits to gain the trust of a Shadow Hunter? But, there are many players in this dangerous part of the world. Evil is around every corner and these corners bring the readers to some very original story intersections.

I felt the fears of the characters so vividly in my mind. This author works magic with her words as she takes us on a very intense journey filled with deceit, extreme danger, and a twist on the reader's emotions which causes your mind to take a breath and wonder out-loud how she, the author, thought up this story.

I cannot say this enough: Read this book.

Great story

Loved Chulah and April's story. April is half fae and humans. Raised in the fairy realm, unloved, abandoned as an infant by her parents. There is a traitor and the fairy realm is in danger. April is sent to convince the Hunters to capture the traitor and destroy the threat. April has been in love with Chulas for years. She has secretly been helping and protecting him since she unintentionally played a part in his fathers death. While Chula doesn't trust April and the fae, he is drawn to her. A fast paced love story, can't wait for the next book!

As usual Debbie Herbert has written another intriguing paranormal suspense romance. Chulah's story involves a fae who is half human. April has loved Chulah since she was 16. They have to face a lot to be together. The book is so good I could not put it down. Thank you Debbie for a great afternoon of reading. Looking forward to your next book.

Herbert takes us back to the Bayou and Choctaw legend with her latest book. April had her work cut out for her in winning over the love of her life. A lovely romance filled with the challenge of being from different worlds while having to conquer a rising evil.

The story of the Shadow Hunters and their quest to fight evil in the bayou continues. Bayou Shadow Protector is book 2 in this series, following the story of April Meadows and Chulah Rivers. We’ve met Chulah Rivers in Book 1 Bayou Shadow Hunter. He is Tombi Silver, book one’s main characters friend since childhood, his second in command.

April Meadows is a fairy, a “Halfling” to be exact, part human and part fairy. She is sent to earth to convince the Shadow Hunters to help in the defeat of Hoklonote’s battle to release Nalusa who was the Shadow Hunters enemy in the first book. April is accompanied to earth by another Halfling named Steven, who is here to make her adjustment to being human easier, and assist when he can in trying to convince the Shadow Hunters to help the Fae. Being a fairy hasn’t always been easy for April, since she is part human as well. April has been protecting Chulah since he was a young man, following him in Fae form throughout his life. She helped him in battle, and even fell in love with him before he even laid eyes on her. When they do meet, both being in human form the chemistry is electric. Something is there between them, but a secret from the past could hold them back. It took me a bit of time to read chapters 1-10. They weren’t as necessarily as action packed and captivating as book 1, but none the less the story began to unfold and you were given adequate information.

A relationship forms between Chulah and April. Like Tombi and Annie there is a connection instantly between Chulah and April. After some tense moments between the two, not to give too much away, the fairies agree to help in the fight against Hoklonote. From chapter 11-20 the book began to turn a page. There was much more action, less tension between April and Chulah, and the love they shared for each other began to blossom as they fought for a common cause.

The ending, although satisfying with the HEA, but I felt could of used more. Now, that being said, I have one thing I’d love to see in an upcoming book. I would love to see the progression of this series tell a story with Tallulah and maybe her getting her HEA.

I love this series and these characters. This book didn’t suck me in, like book 1 did, but I did enjoy it. I can’t wait to continue this series and see how their lives progress.

This is the second book in the Bayou Magic series and can be read as a standalone. It's just as magical and enticing as the first book "Bayou Shadow Hunter".

Chulah is the second in command of the shadow hunters. He is a man of "not many words" but little escapes his sharp supernatural senses.

April is half human and half fae. She is not treated very well by the faes because of her human side. She feels isolated and has a sense of "not belonging".

When the faes are threatened by an evil spirit who is on a quest to unleash the most evil of them all, April seeks the help of the shadow hunters. Chulah is trying to escape his recent troubles by taking a ride on his beloved Harley. Out of nowhere appears this beautiful young woman looking for a lift to her shop and apartment. Chulah is suspicious of strangers, more so since his tribe was betrayed. Not being one to leave a damsel in distress, he reluctantly offers assistance to April. He is intrigued by her looks and behaviour, especially as April knows more about him than she should.

April reveals her true nature and her reasons for seeking the help of the shadow hunters. This creates some discord amongst the tribe that always stands by one another. The more they uncover about the intentions of this evil being, the more dangerous the situation becomes. They are all in danger. The shadow hunters, the faes and humans alike. Chulah starts to trust April who is besotted by him until she reveals her secret. A secret, she has been harbouring since she was sixteen and has a direct impact on what Chulah has endured. Can they continue to work together to defeat this evil being or will their already delicate relationship thwart their chances?

This supernatural romantic novel has a nice flow with some very interesting cultural practices. I like Chulah's dedication to his family and to the purpose of the shadow hunters. April appears to be vulnerable but has the strength to put her life on the line for those dear to her. The characters from the previous book make some valuable contributions to this outstanding story.

I certainly enjoyed reading yet another well written and well developed story by this author and would highly recommend.

Bayou Shadow Protector, the second book in the Bayou Magic Series, is a great romance set in Louisiana. It has a unique story-line that features will-o’-the-wisps, Hoodoo magic Native American lore and fairies. I love how the different types of legends and lore fit together perfectly. This book can be read as a stand-alone book, but I highly recommend reading Bayou Shadow Hunter first.

April Meadows is a half fairy/half human sent on a mission to enlist the help of the bayou hunters to save the Fae race. She struggles to fit in her world and has always watched the human world from afar, staying invisible. April needs to assure that the Shadow hunters help her battle evil to save them all.

Chulah Rivers, Native American who hunts shadow spirits and evil beings, stumbled upon April at the edge of the woods. He is saddened by the loss of his friends to the evil spirits and heart-broken by a woman who has turned him down. He is also fighting his feelings for a beautiful stranger that who knows too much about him and his past.

Chulah and April had a turbulent relationship throughout the book. He didn’t trust her and wondered if she was secretly working for evil. She was desperate for him to help her race and for the approval of the other Fae. The more time they spend together, the closer they get and the more Chulah wants to deny his feelings.

This book has a great story-line and the supernatural aspects of the book were well done. I loved experiencing a different atmosphere and cultural references that are not common in other books. I loved seeing Annie and Tombi again in this book. Chulah’s sister was also awesome. I have read a few other books by this author and they have all been really good. I am looking forward to reading more from Debbie Herbert.

Beginning: The beginning flowed great and the writing style was very nice. This is the second book of the Bayou Magic series, however, the series is full of standalone novels so I promise you will understand this book completely without reading the first book.

Characters: April Meadows is the main female character. She is a Halfling meaning that she is part human, part fairy. But being both has been difficult for her and she struggles a bit adjusting to the human world. Chula is a shadow hunter and he is pretty great and hot. I believe many readers will enjoy these two characters and the chemistry between them.

Plot: Evil spirits are threatening the survival of the Fae. April Meadows has been sent to the human world in order to get help from the Native American shadow hunters. Chulah Rivers is one of the warriors that watches over Bayou La Siryna. He finds April in the woods near his home which is uncommon but he does not find it alarming. April has a specific mission to complete along with a personal one and she wants to get Chulah’s cooperation as a shadow hunter and gain his trust. But April refuses to use any Fae abilities to get her way. April has been watching over Chulah for a long time, protecting him, and even developing feelings for him even though he has never met her. Gaining Chulah's help ends up being more difficult than she expected.

Honestly it's been a day or two since I read it and a lot of the details are just floating away.

Chulah Rivers hunts evil spirits and sends them on their way. April Meadows appears into his life and she knows a lot about him, his work and what happened the day his dad died.

It's messy and complicated and the world seems somehow shallow but has potential.

I liked Tombi and Annie, I loved Chulah and April. Perhaps it's my soft spot for Fae or the fact that I never had a "That bastard!" moment with Chulah like I did with Tombi, but in any case, the series is getting better as the stories progress.

Chulah Rivers is a Native American Shadow Hunter in the Bayou and is used to strange creatures and evil spirits. Then a woman called April Meadows suddenly appears and asks him to help in a battle that threatens the Fae which she claims will affect the balance between the worlds. She also appears to know everything about him and he finds himself trying to resist a desire for her.

Wow - this was a great story that merged the worlds or the Shadow Hunters and the Fae in a charming love story. It had plenty of twists and turns with drama and intrigue. It was well written and I could feel the emotions and dilemmas experienced by the characters in the story.

Okay so a few things I must confess - I won this book in a Harper Collins competition, along with a crate of mixed Mills and Boons books, so because of this I didn’t realise that this was the second book in the series (oops). Starting second book in didn’t seem to effect the story - I can see that perhaps I missed some background story on the other two main characters Tombi and his wife, however it didn’t detract from the story or confuse me in anyway - which is a testament to Debbie’s writing!

Although April is not a shadow hunter herself, someone who throws themselves in the way of danger for the good of other people, she is no less courageous, strong and doesn’t run from a fight which is surprisingly refreshing!

I enjoyed the reference to Native American folklore which is brought into todays world. Imagine if the world of old is really living in the shadows of the modern one!

Chulah Rivers is one of the warriors who watches over Bayou La Siryna, after meeting April Meadows wandering alone in the forest, she says she is here to tell him about the evil spirit in the woods that is trying to trap the Fae into joining his evil army against the shadow hunters that would stop them from ruling the world.

April is half Fae, neither accepted in the Fae realm nor the human one - she volunteers to be the go between to negotiate the Shadow hunters cooperation. April has watched Chulah from afar, helping where she could to right a past mistake that she made that affected the Shadow hunter tribe way back in the past.

Chulah has kept himself away from the group to make himself stronger and to keep himself from getting hurt emotionally, due to a traumatic experience when he was a child.

April comes across as the new to being human as she really is. She wants to win Chulah’s trust and love based on her personality, not using any Fae abilities. Her ache for acceptance feels so real. The tension between the couple is electrifying, sometimes painfully so - but both are learning to put behind them their past guilts and hurts and move forward with all that they could achieve as the strong couple they could be.

This is my first read by Debbie Herbert but it certainly won’t be my last!

Actual Rating - 3.5 Stars!
