This one got a D+ at AAR. Snark ahoy!

It can be tempting, when you read hundreds of books a year, to confine yourself to picking up titles by authors whose work you know you are going to enjoy. But when it comes to reviewing, I make a point of sampling books by some of the newer names in historical romance, and sometimes I’m lucky and I find a new author to add to my ‘’must read’ list. Sadly, however, it’s been my experience that the ‘finds’ are in the minority.

Only a Mistress will Do by Joanna Jaxon
House of Pleasure #3

This standalone historical novel set in 1761 deals with marriage, mistresses, societal and family expectations. It is also about where in the scheme of life love has a part – if it has a part at all. In the past women were commodities and as wives might have less affection from her husband than the same man’s mistress. When Violet Carlton reaches the point where she must choose to live or die she chooses to live and to do so she offers h

Interesting plot and very twisty. For the era in history we certainly have lusty particapents in the story.

I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I did get slightly irritated with both the hero and heroine. The drama keeping them apart....oh my...sigh...what a scarafice. It got a tad repetitive and at times I just wanted it to move on and solve the problems already.

It was enjoyable kinda light read.

Received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

With all of her family and friends dead and all of her possessions sold, Violet Carlton has fallen on the toughest of times and is now left with the tattered dress on her back, the holey shoes on her feet and her virginity. Only one of her three possessions has value. Sloughing off her pride and her sheltered innocence, Violet goes to Madam Vestry's House of Pleas

This was an interesting love story set during the regency period. After the deaths of her family, Violet goes to the one place that she feels is the only place to help keep her alive. On the night she is supposed to entertain her first client, Tris happens to recognize who she was related to. His guilt keeps him from going through with it and instead feels responsible to help her. He ponders about keeping her as his mistress but because he is marrying another, he doesn't want to break his vows. ...more

This story grabbed my attention from the first few pages, and kept me riveted enough to stay up late to finish reading it. There was a depth to these characters that I enjoyed immensely, and the circumstances that led Violet to her position was nothing less than heartbreaking. I adored the interactions between Tristian and Violet, and I must admit to rooting for them throughout the novel.

I also have to say that I really enjoyed Dora as a secondary character, and I really hope we get to experien

Jenna Jaxon has another winner with this story, the third in her “House of Pleasure” series. Her character development is outstanding, as usual. Violet and Tristan live and breathe on the pages, making the reader hope for a happy ending. With arranged marriages common in those times, it would not have been unusual for a man to marry someone he didn’t love, and doubtless those unions sometimes caused discontent and desire for someone else. The mores of the times dictated societal censure if Tris ...more

I read somewhere that with romance novels, readers know at the start there will be an HEA, but that the author must convince them that there won't be. Author Jenna Jaxon did that for me with Only a Mistress Will Do. I kept wondering, how will the couple get their HEA after everything Jaxon is putting them through? I loved this book. It's one of the more complex Regency romances I've read. The characters are put through the paces in this one--from the opening scene right up until the end. Speakin ...more

I hadn't read a historical novel in quite some time and was really happy I chose this one to get back in the genre. The main characters had great chemistry and I was hooked from page one. It'd been a while since I'd found a book that kept me up at night and whose characters I couldn't stop thinking about. This was it! I didn't realize it was a series, but the novel definitely left me intrigued about the other character's stories. I'll be checking them out.

Though I enjoyed reading this novel, it felt incredibly long. Especially towards the end I was having difficulty keeping my mind focussed. There were sections of it that weren't really part of the important story line, but were really interesting, but other sections that just didn't hold my attention. I really liked the characters, though, and that kept me wanting to read it until the end.

I didn't think I would enjoy this book. Another lady forced to work in a brothel? Another knight in shining armor saves her? Again he's betrothed to another? They fall in love and can't marry? Same old story? No, it's not, somehow the story was new and different, with an H and h I cared about and wanted to see have their HEA. The characters were well developed and interesting, there were some new twists to the story and some great passionate romance. The poor fiancé definitely deserves her own s ...more

I thought maybe there would be a second book to say what happened to Dora, her sister in law and Violet and Tris.

"Only a Mistress Will Do" by Jenna Jaxon is a book that grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. The book had its flaws, but I liked it.
Violet's circumstances are greatly reduced, her brother and her cousin were killed in a duel about a year ago and she just lost her grandmother. She has no one to turn to, and decides that she wants to live and not starve to death, so she ends up on the front steps of a brothel, ready to sell herself to the highest bidder.
Tristan has gone to the brothel

I have to say that I didn't really care for Violet very much. I like my heroines to be strong female leads and I just didn't get that from Violet. But I didn't like Tristan that much better. I did like the storyline, so had Violet and Tristan been much stronger characters I think I would have like it a whole lot more.

Cute story with charming characters who face lots of conflicts and angst on their way to a HEA. I liked Violet's practicality and resourcefulness. Tristan was a bit of a horndog but he was devoted to making Violet happy. Great chemistry between the two. If you're a fan of the House of Pleasure series, you'll be delighted with this one.

Only a Mistress will Do by Jenna Jaxon started off ok...but honestly I just didn't feel a connection between the two main characters and felt Tris was self centered and frankly kind of dull. I like a strong alpha male in most historical romances and he just fell short of the mark for me, I actually liked Violets potential suitors character more than the hero in this story. At 35%, I threw in the towel because it was going south fast. I appreciate the opportunity to read the book though. Thanks t ...more

The moment Tristan and Violet met, I could feel their chemistry and attraction, but very soon after they proclaimed to love each other, then these crazy and at times unbelievable obstacles kept popping up. I don't know what happened, but somewhere along the way it lost the sizzle for me. A lot of that has to do with Tristan's interactions with his betrothed(who I actually grew to like.. I wonder if she'll get a book). Sometimes I was ready for the plot to move

I haven't read a story by Ms Jaxon before. I liked the concept of the story, a gently bred woman facing starvation so she lowers her pride to go to a house to become a courtesan. Lucky for Violet that her first customer Tristan recognizes that she doesn't belong there. He brings her to the house where he kept his mistresses. They are attracted to each other, but he is an honorable man who intends to honor his wedding vows. There are a lot of twists in the story and I even liked Tristan'

ONLY A MISTRESS WILL DO is the 3rd book in the House of Pleasure series. I haven't read the previous books and I had no trouble reading it as a stand alone. It's also my first Jenna Jaxon novel.
I'm finding it very hard to write a review for this book. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It kind of left me flat. The characters were likable enough and the story was ok. The romance was ok. You definitely didn't know what kind of drama was going to hit them next. It kinda has a Regency feel e
