Pretty good, if ending a bit abrupt..

.. I _will_ say that I was glad to have the epilogue in the third story, AND the bonus story Solstice, BUT the stories _were_ a bit on the short side, and ended rather suddenly, in my opninion 🤔
They are companion stories, with each of them focusing different couplings, I know that, and I don't mind that at all, I'd still just really would have liked _more_, because the World seems really intriguing and so does the characters, when they can get their heads out ...more

Ugh! I just had to stop reading. I got through the first part and couldn't go any further. There was no real character development and so I didn't connect. The writing seemed rushed. This is really 3 novellas tied together. And a lot of the plot (although there wasn't much development there either) was kinda far fetched. ...more

Ugh! DNF @ 77%. Thank god I only spent 99 cents on this. If I had bought the stories separately I would not have continued past the first one. What's wrong you ask? Let me count the ways. 1) Instalove in every story. 2) no real plot, just setup for wildly improbable sex scenes. 3) too high an ick factor for me. I've been a diehard Ophelia Bell fan for several years and literally devour everything she writes. In my opinion, Bell writes the most erotic dragon-shifter romance I've ever read but last year, she spread her wings and gave her readers something new and a little different with her Black Mountain Bears series. Now, I'll be the first to admit; I'm an old fart and not terribly fond of change, so with quite a few reservations, I decided to give this collection a whirl. And I'm so glad I did! It was AMAZEBALLS! This anthology was originally published and released as three separate books. Personally, I believe each of the original stories could be read as a standalone but they're so much better when read in conjunction with each other because the characters and underlying storyline are all connected. I read Clawed(Book One:Emma's story), Bitten(Book Two: Jasper's story) and Nailed(Book Three: Jade's story) when they were originally released in October and November of 2015. I jumped at the chance to reread the collection when Bell released this collection with an added new story, or I guess it could be considered an epilogue, entitled Solstice. I didn't think it possible, but I loved this collection more the second time around! The entire collection is well crafted, well edited and beautifully written. And as in true Ophelia Bell form, it crosses the boundaries of several genres giving the reader a perfect storm of supernatural, fantasy, mystical, paranormal, adventure and erotic romance. That statement alone sums up why I love Ophelia Bell's work....she never limits or confines her work to simply one genre. It's like an all you can eat buffet for readers who enjoy anything unconventional. I can honestly say, I've never been dissatisfied with any of Bell's books. She gives her readers a lot of bang for their buck and does it skillfully and exquisitely. Did I like this collection? No, I LOVED it! Was there anything I didn't like? Not a darn thing! Would I recommend the Stonetree Trilogy? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain some steamy dreamy sex. If you've read any of the books from Bell's Sleeping Dragons, you'll discover this collection parallels and blends perfectly with her dragon world. No spoilers from me, but please be forewarned, this is not your ordinary, everyday paranormal bear-shifter series. However, I will say it's so much more...more fantasy, more action, more romance, more heartache, just more everything! Will I read this author again? Duh, of course! I really wanted to like this book, but despite the interesting premise it didn't live up at all. The 'plot' existed only to set up the improbable sex scenes, scenes which were just tedious, men 'servicing' women out of their hormonal pain... Although some characters had potential upon first meeting them, there was no character development or if there was any it was negative. She sees trees, flowers, birds and then total darkness as she passes out. She awakens to two beautiful naked men, Julian and Agustus, who were sent by her mother, the Queen. Her cousins, Jasper and Jade, came through another portal but it was not their time. They are brought unresponsive to the Queen for healing by Gunnar and Autumn from the Windchaser clan, but her mother is not well and doesn't have enough magic to handle the healing. Emma needs to mate and get pregnant to awaken her magic It's the only way to save her cousins. Her mother has chosen the son of the Sundance clan for her to mate with but he is too far away. She wants to fulfill her duty but she wants to mate with Julian and Augustus. Her mother refuses. There is so much she needs to learn about the ursa and being a Princess. She finds a way to claim her mates and save her cousins. This is a really great story with so much excitement. Makes me wish I was ursa.

BITTEN: Jasper Stonetree is trying to figure out his place in Sanctuary. His aunt is the Queen, his cousin Emma is a Princess, now pregnant and mated to two ursa males. A lot has happened in the two weeks they have been here. When Jasper and Jade, his twin, crossed the portal they were a few months shy of their birthday. This meant it was not their time to come through the portal and could have been a death sentence. They were found by a pair of ursa, Autumn Sundance and Gunnar Windchaser who carried Jasper and Jade to the Queen hoping to save them with magic. The pair had fallen for Jasper and had hopes he might feel the same. Jasper has had a very painful experience with romance and is not willing to risk his heart again. However, when Autumn is abducted Jasper can no longer fight his feelings for the pair. Gunnar and Jasper waste no time going after her. Autumn also has a painful romantic past that has scarred her soul. You can feel the pain both Jasper and Autumn carry from their pasts and the love that Gunnar has for them both. After sharing all their pain and secrets there is nothing else but to prepare for their life together. This is a match that will set the world on fire, literally. There is still plenty more magic in and around them.

NAILED: Jade feels out of place living in Sanctuary. She grew up with her twin, Jasper, and her cousin, Emma. Jasper has mated with his two loves and the trio are Sanctuary Guardians living on the Outside. Emma is a Princess, mated and pregnant. Jade wants to figure out how she fits in and begins a tour of her new home with a pair of young ursa males. Starting with a camping trip they head out to see all of the waterfalls. Ursa females are dominant and males are taught to cherish them and do whatever is necessary to please them. She wants to learn how to shift to her bear, but she doesn't know how. Her companions pleasure her in an attempt to bring her bear forward and would love to be her chosen mates. However, she longs for the decisiveness and possession of a strong alpha male to take charge of her. She enjoys her companions but they are young and lack the dominance she wants from them. Needing some space from them to think, they head to the opposite side of the waterfall leaving her alone for a day or two. Suddenly finding herself needing her companions to help her through estros (her heat cycle), she attempts to ease her own pain in the waterfall. Almost drowning, she is pulled from the water by a strong ursa male who eases her pain. He is just the right amount of patience, tenderness and alpha dominance that she was looking for. She wants him as her mate but he refuses. He's been disowned by his mother and made infertile. This book was so good, I didn't want it to end.

If you love the world of Fantasy that Ophelia Bell has created for the Higher Races, then you don't want to miss this trilogy.

This series is set alongside the Sleeping and Rising Dragon's series and into the immortal Dragon series.

We see how the Ursa Queen, Emma, came to wear her crown. The books are set in the Ursa Sanctuary and their immediate surrounds in the human world.

I love reading a very different take on bear shifters and this trilogy didn't disappoint. The rules were different and the best part was that the strong, beautiful women were in complete charge in every story of the sexy and handsome males. Great job, Ophelia Bell. You are my new favorite author.

I had the immense pleasure of reading this series as each book was released. I loved it then and I love, Love, LOVE it now & still! The creativity that Ophelia displays time and again in ANY and EVERY one of her books never fails to captive me from beginning to end, regardless of the heat level! This series is no different! I ABSO-GROWLING-LUTELY LOVE all Gaia save the Queen 5 GOLD BEARS

I had the immense pleasure of reading this series as each book was released. I loved it then and I love, Love, LOVE it now & still! Overall this is a BEARTACULAR series with one FURRIFIC twist in the bonus epilogue that I did NOT see coming! The creativity that Ophelia displays time and again in ANY and EVERY one of her books never fails to captive me from beginning to end, regardless of the heat level! This series is no different! I ABSO-GROWLING-LUTELY LOVE all of the “little” things that give the story history with the stories told to Emma, Jasper & Jade growing up, the magic of it all and of course, the SHIFTACULAR Happy Furry After tail part! Here are a few things I said about each book:

Clawed - I don't even know where to begin, nor how to say just how beautiful, magical, romantic, emotional & all round BEARTASTIC this story truly is!! I was so intrigued with the hierarchy, the laws & rules, the magic & power, the uber hot men and of course everything shifter! I absolutely adored the characters, feeling for & with them… I thought that the storyline was so very unique and beyond creative! The shifter lore, the long walks in the forest & mountains, the stories, their family lore, history - I just loved how this was all shared and played out.

Bitten - It's full of romance, friendship, happy & sad times, humor, passion, panic, heartbreak, forgiveness and that barely even scratches the surface! (pun fully intended) I was so fascinated & captivated by & with Jasper, Gunnar and Autumn! Three great individual characters with secrets of some kind, crosses to bear (again pun fully intended), pasts to accept & come to terms with/move past in order to be able to go forward into a HEA future, hopefully together. I love that the characters are ones that you instantly want to know more about, become friends with them, even be them!

Nailed - WHEW! Talk about a sweetly intense, or is that intensely sweet?, story! Regardless this was the PAWFECT ending to a GRRREAT series! As with the two books before it, Nailed is a BEARTASTIC story about Jade as she comes to terms with her heritage, family, the changes & finding her mates. Ophelia takes a slightly different approach to this one. Personally I thought that was purely brilliant! This time we get to focus more on the friendship/mating/romance side of it, all while Jade is trying to convince the 2 men that they can & should, be more assertive when it comes to what they want.

Solstice - What an ABSO-SOLSTICE-LUTELY SHIFTACULAR story!! Truly beautiful in all ways, even, no, ESPECIALLY the sad. As brief as it was, I loved the catch up with Jasper & Jade, and of course with Emma too! But the twists & surprise Christmas visitors at the end? That was BEARY, BEARY DRAGONTASTIC!! Ophelia, once again you enthralled me right from the BEARY beginning and I hope this means that very soon we will have more Black Mountain Bear stories to read! Emphasis on the SOON part! :)

Ophelia has this way, this magic, that brings her characters & PAWMAZING worlds to life, taking the reading experience to a whole new level! I experienced everything with the characters and even as them too. No matter what Ophelia writes, I have loved every. single. one. No matter the heat level, Ophelia’s FURNOMENAL talent & true gift ensure that the story level is ALWAYS at the FURRY highest PAWSSIBLE!

The first story in the Trilogy is "Clawed" - The story concerns fables and how in this case they were true. We have a young girl, Emma, looking for answers concerning her suspected background, her missing father and the tales he told as she was growing up. Were the tales in fact true. She, along with her twin cousins, Jasper and Jade, decides to go searching for answers but what she finds is much more than she expected Now, as she discovers who and what she is, she must make some hard decisions The first story in the Trilogy is "Clawed" - The story concerns fables and how in this case they were true. We have a young girl, Emma, looking for answers concerning her suspected background, her missing father and the tales he told as she was growing up. Were the tales in fact true. She, along with her twin cousins, Jasper and Jade, decides to go searching for answers but what she finds is much more than she expected Now, as she discovers who and what she is, she must make some hard decisions concerning her destiny and the men, Gus and Julian, she has come to love. Will she follow her families destiny or her heart, or is there a third choice she can make. Pick up a copy and read one of Ophelia Bell's latest stories and maybe you will have second thoughts on those old wives tales you've heard before.

The second story is "Bitten" and now we have Jasper's story; the cousin of Emma and the brother of Jade. Jasper has in the distant past had a relationship that hurt him badly and now does not believe that he will find "real" love, that he will just be hurt again. What, or whom, he finds in this new world will make it hard for him to keep that belief. He and Jade are saved by Autumn and Gunner and his immediate attraction to the both of them confuses and scares him. But they are determined to show him he is wrong and will do what they have to. He must willing accept Autumn for her to bond and mate them both. Read this erotic and at times humorous story of what they all go through in trying to accomplish this; you never know Jasper may be two hard-headed to accept this world's fate.

The third story, "Nailed" and is Jada's story. She is use to the human world that she grew up in and is finding it hard to accept the role women have in this world. A world where women have the power. She wants a man who will take what he wants not because it's his duty. She has a lot to learn about what love and desire can accomplish. She finds she's attracted to two men, Sten and Orrick, both with their own beauty and desires, but feels that they don't want her for themselves but only for what she desires. Then she meets Aidan, whose been stripped of his family, home and has lost the woman he's loved forever. Her attraction for him is even stronger than for the other two. Can she show him he's worthy, can she really love and want all three. Read and see what happens to these four people, can she make them want her because it's her or will it be their duty. Oh my this is one hot story that you just have to read.

We have a BONUS in the Trilogy - "Solstice" in this we have more of Emma's story and what happens a year after meeting and bonding with her mates. They have returned to the Sanctuary, where Emma now lives with her family, including her mother the Queen. It is time of the Solstice celebration and the coronation of her becoming Queen. But little does she understand what that means. There's a surprise at the end, which I will not give away her, but it's an exciting one. ...more

Complete three book series of the Black Mountain Bears. Amazing journey of Emma and her cousins, Jade & Jasper. At the conclusion, there is a short tidbit of sweetness titled Solstice that sets the stage for the next great series, Sleeping Dragons. In Solstice, there is a breathtaking ceremony followed by a shocking event. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This set is the whole trilogy. If you like PNR and some very hot scenes you will love this set.

Book 1 was interesting. I felt it was abrupt at the ending. Book 2 starts where book 1 ended but the focus was ok the first trio and followed the next trio. I did skim book 2. I lacked interest in it. Book 3 was a book I thought I would have no interest in because I felt the sister was really just there in the human world. She just followed the others. I read this trilogy when it was originally released as the Black Mountain Bears. Much like all of Ophelia's sexy fantasies this one did not disappoint. I was not a fantasy reader until one day I stumbled upon her Dragon series and since then I've been hooked, so when the Black Mountain Bear series released I devoured it in a couple of days. This story pulls you in like quicksand. Like I didn't feel the pull right away, but it definitely got me. There weren't any huge pivots, the changes just developed naturally. The characters were interesting and as the story grew, so did they. They got deeper, more intense, more relatable. The story arc was well defined and every scene built up to the next one. A must read!!! Loved this series. It's great that it's all in one book. Nailed, Bitten, and Clawed are all wonderfully written, exciting to read, full of action, suspense, and sexy, hot scenes.
