I am always excited when I open a Jennifer Bernard book. But, when she writes a new firefighter series, and makes it about Hotshots, I am overly excited. She did not disappoint me in any way with the start of the Jupiter Point series. Sean and Evie were two special people who knew that the wonderful town of Jupiter Point would never accept … or would they?

Sean was the bad boy of Jupiter Point. He left after a night in jail protecting the one person who always seemed to have faith in him. During the Big Canyon burnover, he had an epiphany … he had to return to Jupiter Point just to show them that he’s not the screw-up that they all thought he was. He gets his chance when he is offered the job as the leader of the Jupiter Point Hotshots and now has to face everyone, including the man that put him in jail. He won’t let anything deter him from his mission until he sees Evie. Now, he’ll do whatever it takes to see her smile, to help her, to keep her secret.

Evie could not believe her eyes when the new Hotshot crew was introduced. She couldn’t believe that Sean was back, here, in Jupiter Point at the same time that she has to endorse Brad – the man that landed him in jail. She can’t do it and she can’t tell anyone why without embarrassing her family. She’ll never do anything to bring shame to her parents, especially with her mother battling Parkinson’s. The mudslinging starts, the accusations fly, decisions have to be made and all Evie could do is think about Sean and how he stole her heart. It’s time for her to stand up to Brad, to tell the people of Jupiter Point just who they were backing and who was there to protect her, then and now.

Jupiter Point and the citizens of this little town are hysterical! Everything is named after a Constellation, star or planet. The people are just as crazy as some of the names. But, once you start reading about them, about the place, you can’t help but fall in love with it and everyone in it.

As for Ms. Bernard, well let’s just say that she definitely has a way with words. She knows how to bring levity into situations that you wouldn’t think there would be a way to. She knows how to be serious when the story calls for it. She knows how to write a story! She brings her characters to life and allows you to get to know them, fall in love with them and cheer them on. All-in-all, Jennifer Bernard will always be one of my go-to authors. Now, if she would just write a firefighter/baseball book, she would make a lot of people happy.

This story had an exciting beginning and ending but I did not like the plot. At first I kind of accepted it because she was a child then one of the early actions the adult heroine did really turned me off. I didn't buy into her justification. I skipped and skimmed the rest of the book. Firefighter Sean returns to his hometown to clear his name and Evie is reminded of that bad night in her past.

This was my first time reading this author, though the blurb seemed very interesting. Sadly, I was very bored with the entire book!

I felt that Evie and Sean went from enemies to lovers very quickly, and it really wasn't realistic. I also had a hard time connecting with either of them, which made their romance also hard to believe. The plot wasn't as engaging as I'd hoped it would be either. I felt that there wasn't enough details about the firefighting aspect of the plot, that it was a missed opportunity. The building of a firefighting base would have been very interesting to read about!

I think I'll pass on this author in the future...

I'm not sure how I let myself get behind on reading Jennifer Bernard. I really do love her firemen. So hot! Like the play of words? That's the wonderful thing about Book Club Thursday's Clearing off the Bookshelves, I get a chance to read the books that have been sitting around waiting for me.

Set the Night on Fire is book one of the the Jupiter Point series. It starts off whats looks like a great new series from her.

The beginning of this book is so scary and intense. I loved it! Right away your into the story and want more. After the first chapter it only gets better.

I love Sean, he's such a great guy that has had to go through a bunch of shit growing up. All he went through made him the best man that he is. Even though he knew that coming home wouldn't be easy on him, he did it anyway. It's never easy to face the past.

I also enjoyed Evie but wish she didn't have such a hard time standing up for herself. She learned the hard way that emotions and guilt pushed aside come out when you least except them too.

Set the Night on Fire, is a emotionally driven story that keeps you in the story and won't let you out until the story is over. I'm not going to wait so love to read the next book in the series.

If you're are a fan of Bernard's The Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel, you'll love the Jupiter Point series. Don't even get me started with that series. LOVED IT!!!!

Firefighter Sean Marcus was head of a hot shot crew that got caught in a wildfire. The team had to use their shelters while the fire passed over them. I could almost feel the fire when I was reading about it. During that fire, Sean makes a promise to himself to return to Jupiter Point and start a hot shot crew there. He left disgraced years ago after spending the night in jail. He was trying to save Evie McGraw from being attacked by the town's perfect son. She never spoke a word of that night to anyone. Flash forward 13 years and now Evie is all grown up and still hiding that secret. She's kept quiet all of these years to protect her family at the expense of her own mental health. Now Sean is back and tries to get her to see why she must come clean. This was a great start to a brand new series and I cannot wait to see how the additional stories play out.

After a frightening experience fighting wildfires in the Big Canyon wilderness, Sean Marcus vowed to go back home to Jupiter Point, California. He wants to show the townspeople that the former bad boy is truly reformed, and he will be the superintendent of the Jupiter Point HotShots, the wildfire crew. Thirteen years before, Sean fled the town in utter disgrace, he wants to set things straight. As the new leader, he is invited to the town council meeting to greet the people. Then he sees her, a gorgeous woman, whom he didn’t recognise at first. Last time he saw her was thirteen years ago, when she was fourteen, and it landed him in jail. Evie, who works in the Sky View Gallery, is president of the business coalition and also present at the town council meeting, she never expected Sean to be there; but Evie had never forgotten him. And when their eyes meet, the intense sexual chemistry they both experience stuns them both…

Everyone knows that Jennifer Bernard knows her firefighting; I must admit I’m terrified of fires, and her descriptions are so realistic, I was nearly living my worst nightmare – and that’s one heck of a compliment! Ms. Bernard’s paints her fictional town in vivid colours, and I got the feeling I knew the people as well as the characters did. Sean has an extraordinarily interesting backstory; I wanted to know every little detail of his past. SET THE NIGHT ON FIRE is a bit difficult to review without giving away any spoilers, so suffice it to say that the villain is one smarmy, despicable character, who is also fabulously fascinating and will make your skin crawl. Evie has secrets that only Sean knows, and while I will not judge how she deemed to deal with her issue in the past – everyone copes differently – I was rather perplexed at how she decided to handle her personal issue in the present in her dealings with Sean, and I also had problems with how she dealt with the public side of her predicament. This will seem very obscure if you have not read the book, but when you do, you will know what I’m talking about, and you might or might not agree. While I really liked Sean, I never warmed up to Evie, I just couldn’t understand the decisions she made, how she saw things.

Ms. Bernard’s writing is a fluid and eloquent as always and I’m thrilled that my favourite character will star in this series’ next instalment, and no, I’m not telling!

Set the Night on Fire is the story of Sean Marcus & Evie McGraw. Sean was Evie's brother's friend. After his parents were killed in a plane crash, Sean went to live with the McGraw's until he disappeared. When Sean came back, he was a hero & in charge of creating a hotshot team in Jupiter Falls. He wants to prove to the town that he isn't a screwup.

Evie has opened a gallery in her hometown showcasing photographs. She dreamed of traveling the world taking pictures but gave that up to help take care of her mother after her diagnosis of Parkinson's. Sean saved her one night & is the only one that knows what happened. Sparks fly when Evie & Sean meet back up again. The chemistry between them is hot & intense. Will Sean gain the respect of the town? Will Evie keep her secret or realize it's time to stand her ground & let it out?

Jennifer Bernard has a talent for drawing the readers into the story & her characters lives from the very beginning. By putting Sean in a life or death situation, she's ramped up the danger in the first chapter & has the reader emotionally vested in his survival. She then keeps you involved with every twist & turn on Evie & Sean's journeys. Evie is on a journey of self discovery. She needs to learn that what happened wasn't her fault & that it is time to live & love again. Sean's journey is to get past the shame of his childhood & open his eyes to the truth. He is worthy of love & the town has always supported him.

The characters are well thought out & realistic. The narrative is descriptive & paints the scenery in your mind as you read. I could place myself in each scene & watch it all unfold. The sex scenes were loving & tasteful, even when Sean was still trying to say he wasn't in love. The tenderness he felt was written into every gesture & action. The supporting characters give depth & richness to the story & lead to a number of follow up books. I loved Josh & his interactions with Evie's cousin Suzanne. His quick wit & sarcastic humor gave a lightness to scenes that were dark with tension. I can't wait to read the story of Suzanne & him. I would recommend you settle down with this book when you have time to read it from cover to cover. I couldn't put it down.

I was given an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest opinion.

It started out promising but then it got just a little too unrealistic. I know that is odd to say about a romance novel. But stories the revolve around the keeping of a secret make me crazy. Usually the secret being kept is just not significant enough. I felt like Brad should have Evie tied up on the train tracks twirling his villains mustache. I'm glad Evie got her groove back. But it was all to simplistic.

Good!

This was the first book that I've read by this author and it most certainly won't be the last. I really did enjoy this book. Bad boy turn fire fighter says it all really. I loved the characters, the setting, the storyline, and everything in between. I'd definitely say it is worth the read. I even laughed at many of the funny lines from secondary characters. It was a perfect balance.

I can’t just can’t make myself like Evie. Yes something traumatic happened at 14, yes her parents are detached and yes her fathers a dick but this woman runs at every conflict. Isn’t she supposed to be business owner? This author wrote her weak and I can’t respect the weak 🤬

Evie McGraw has lived her entire life in Jupiter Point - she had hoped to become a photographer and travel, but when her mom got sick she made the decision to stay in town. Now she owns an art gallery in this celestial-themed town, and lives a quiet life clear of confrontation (which she hates.) Unfortunately, she gets drawn into a confrontation when, as president of the business owners association, she is supposed to endorse local boy Brad White for political office, But Evie knows better than most what Brad is really like, and she just can't do it. Sean Marcus also knows about Brad. He left town years ago after saving Evie from Brad, and hasn't been back since. He had a reputation as a trouble maker when he was young, but turned his life around and became a Hotshot firefighter. Now he's back in Jupiter point to lead a new team of Hotshots based in the city, and he's just in time to help Evie again. And now that she's all grown up, he's not seeing a little sister any longer! It was really frustrating how Evie kept getting pushed around by Brad, and others. So, I kept wanting to smack her for a good portion of the book. Things picked up when Evie grew a spine, and I also liked how Sean started to deal with his past. I think I'd like to read the next book in the series to see what happens with Josh and Suzanne.

"You're aggravating me again."
"Yes, I can tell. Your eyes are all lit up like a backyard bonfire. It's turning me on."
"Fires turn you on?"
"No. That's all you, sweetness."

5 BLAZING STARS!!

I'm already in love with this new series by Jennifer Bernard!!
She knows how to write an amazing fireman book, and this just became one of my favorites!

Sean Marcus is the leader of a HotShot fire crew and he's taking on a new job back in his old hometown of Jupiter Point. The problem is, he didn't leave on the best of terms. A troublemaker from years ago is coming back to prove he's more than his past. But one look at the girl he left behind all those years ago has thinking other things.

Evie McGraw is the town's sweetheart. She's well respected and is a friend to everyone. But one night many years ago, her life was changed. She's held onto a secret all this time and she never expected it to come to light...until her past collided into her present in the most unexpected way.

"Sean really...just really did something to her, she realized with a sense of wonder. He made her feel safe and strong and sexy. Three things she wasn't used to feeling at all."

I love how this book wasn't just about a reunion between two characters starting a romance. It was a book about two people who were out to prove something of themselves.

One wanted to show they were more than just their family name and the mistakes of their past.
The other wanted to finally speak out for the first time and take charge of their life.

"From now on, there would be no keeping silent, no holding back, no half living. She was going to live her life even when it hurt."

I loved both Evie and Sean. They brought out the best in each other. They shared a past that connected them on a deeper level. Watching them fall for each other was really beautiful to see.

I also like the factor that this story had a serious undertone to it when it came to the secret they each kept. It brought an even stronger dynamic to the storyline. I enjoyed the way Jennifer played it all out through her words.

I'm so excited for the rest of this series because each secondary character that was introduced already has my attention! Whoop whoop!! Bring on more small town romance with some hunky firemen;)

Well done!

"Let's just take a breath for a moment. You know what we say her in Jupiter point. Remember to look at the stars."
"That's nice, but I have something even better to look at, baby."
"Do burnovers always make you so romantic?"
"I'm a rough-and-tough firefighter. Only one thing can make me romantic. You."

Baby! Set the Night on Fire! by Jennifer Bernard

Secrets can shape your life, Love can change it.

E-Book provided by publisher for review. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.
I consider Jennifer a friend and am thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review her work.

I am always wary when a favorite author starts to self-publish: Will s/he be as good as before? Why has s/he gone self-published. Whatever the reason, I knew from our talks that Jennifer is a polished, professional writer with years of work behind her and a bunch of stories in her head, so I was pretty sure she would deliver the goods!

She sure succeeds with SET THE NIGHT ON FIRE and delivers a hot story about a romance between two people who knew each other until as kids. Her writing is romantic, rather than raunchy, in the bedroom. It delivers enough heat to make me fan my face, but not so much I’m afraid everyone knows I am reading “one of those books.” Her descriptions of feelings and lovemaking feels are hot, but subtle and heartfelt. I don’t need really unusual stuff to happen in the bedroom (on the couch, in the kitchen, etc) to get my pulse racing; I prefer a real feel to sexy fiction. I mean, crazy and adventurous is great, but with a woman who’s been shy and inexperienced, it wouldn’t have felt right. When the writing fits together as well as this does it makes the story feel right.

What is also heartfelt is how she describes the issue at the heart of Evie’s lack of a love life. I felt it was spot on, sensitively written and important. It spoke to me of past experiences in my own life. I was moved.

Jennifer writes about small town life, about the problems with growing up and seeing parents age, about being rebellious in a very reserved way, about the secrets we keep from ourselves.

But, don’t think it’s a glum book — it’s not: there are hot, hunky firefighters and a group of women who’ll probably catch their eyes. The small town is fun and filled with mostly good eggs. She’s written in some humorous moments, as well as some suspenseful ones.

I really enjoyed the story – it spoke to my experiences and my life in a way that felt real, only sexier. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT and if you like Firefighter fiction it is top notch in the genre!

I adored this book. While the plot and ending were predictable it was still a fun read. I kept thinking to myself, okay get to the point now because I know what's going to happen lol. The characters were mostly likeable but didn't have any real substance to them except the main characters. Overall it's a fun quick read and has a little bit of spice to it. Just go in expecting knowing you'll know how it'll end.

Great Start!!

What an awesome start to Jennifer Bernard's new Jupiter Point series. She has always done well writing about hot firefighters. You don't get any hotter than a hotshot crew. These guys are big and bad and tough, so it's going to take some special women to tame them.
Take the case of Sean Marcus who has returned to his hometown of Jupiter's Point after 13 years and his friends sister Evie. A lot of things have changed over the years.
I'm so looking forward to the rest of this hot series!

Love

Oh, this was a great journey. Love the town supposedly bad boy coming back to set the record straight. I wasn't real thrilled with Evie at first bc I like strong women and she didn't fit that, but the story had to be set and she proved herself very effectively. The whole story was so well written I could imagine everything as described. Just a really good, exciting fast read with heat--all kinds--laughter, drama and a very good insight to a hotshot's dedication and life.

Wow! That was one smoking hot, sweet, and sexy start to the new Jupiter Point series by Jennifer Bernard! I couldn't put this one down. Sean was the typical single, no relationship guy, with a few past issues to deal with. Evie was the town sweetheart with secrets that eventually had to come out. But they had some serious chemistry, and it took some soul-searching for both of them to find their HEA. Nicely done, Ms. Bernard. Cannot wait for Josh & Suzanne's story!

This was a pretty decent Kindle read. I found the style of writing easy to follow and I enjoyed the characters and the chemistry they had with each other. I think I would have liked to have had more action in the story in terms of fighting fires. I feel like there was a little appetizer in the beginning of the book, but it never hit a main course. I think that would have made the book even better for me.

Made it halfway with this book but I just couldn't read anymore. The main character, Evie was meant to be 27 but she acted and talked as if she was an immature 15 year old. Evie and Sean's "experimental relationship" was seriously lacking in the sexy, passionate department. Very boring storyline.

I really didnt like the plot of this book. I liked the firefighter premise and the wild boy returns home but I did not like the “incident” premise or really Evie’s character. I read up to chapter 20 and DNF.

DNF @ 4% - The first chapter was great! I wanted the whole book to be like that. Unfortunately the second chapter wasn't and I very much dislike romance books that revolve around a secret. Other people may enjoy it, but this book is not for me. (Kindle read)
