About the author

Gail Donovan was fired from her first job in an ice cream shop for making the sundaes too big. She now works in a library and writes middle grade novels, including IN MEMORY OF GORFMAN T. FROG, named to the New York Public Library’s 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing list; FINCHOSAURUS, winner of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award; as well as the trilogy SPARROW BEING SPARROW (Publishers Weekly, starred review), SPARROW SPREADS HER WINGS (Maine Literary Award winner for Young People's Literature), and SPARROW, ALWAYS. She has also written for the Rainbow Fish & Friends picture book series based on the bestselling work of Marcus Pfister. Donovan lives on the coast of Maine, where she jumps in the ocean all year round.

A colourful picture book about a fish who learns about the respect for their environment, and of friendship, and of course, obeying rules, who gets ‘lost’, or more along the lines of choosing to stay behind when he wants to do something special, without thinking about the consequences of his actions. Images pastel and colourful, text suitable for readers rather than beginners, but should be understood by them if read to them.

On a field trip, the big fish are paired up with a smaller buddy fish. Rainbow fish's buddy wanders away and the class works together to find him again. Typical story in the "Rainbow Fish" series; our girls like these stories.

To coincide with learning about rainbows at preschool and now I find out they are learning about the ocean this week. Perfect!
This is a good story about being a good friend, following directions and staying with a group. Good for before a first field trip.

The original rainbow fish I always loved. I thought this story was good as well. One of my favorite parts of these books are the scales in the rainbow fish and how they sparkle on the pages.
